angphil Posted June 6, 2011 Share Posted June 6, 2011 Since I got my visa loads of people have asked me how I went about it (says a lot about teaching in the UK). Below is something I did for a few people I work with to get them started. This may be out of date or bit's not 100%, but it's what I did and I now have my visa. Hope it's some use to someone. :biggrin: My easy (lol) guide for teachers to get their visa for Australia. 1) Check the http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/general-skilled-migration/visa-options-outside.htm website to see if you qualify for points. Check to see if you qualify for state sponsorship (as this will up your points and really speed up your application). 2) Make sure you know where the whole families birth certificate, marriage certificates and passports are (make sure passports have a while left on them – we got our oldest sons renewed before we applied). 3) Book your IELTS test, make sure you do the academic test (you may not need it, but it gives you extra points and I needed mine for state sponsorship and teacher registration). See http://www.ielts.org//test_centre_search/search_results.aspx?TestCentreSearchSubRegion=01502ae9-cf4b-46ba-8214-c5d4331a543d This cost me £115. 4) Practice for the IELTS and remember spelling matters. 5) Get all your documents ready to apply for your skills assessment; they want loads including university transcripts and number of days teaching practice completed. See http://www.aitsl.edu.au/assessment-for-migration.html they want to know everything, so it’s better to send too much rather than leave things out. 6) Get all your documents signed by someone off the approved list and send it off, the application was $450 when I did mine. This should take 8 weeks from when they receive everything, but it starts again if you miss any documents. :arghh:Keep an extra copy of this as you’ll need it for your teacher registration once you’ve got your visa. 7) Once you have your IELTS and skills assessment apply for state sponsorship to the state you want to go to (if doing a 176 like we did). It was supposed to take up to 8 weeks, but we got it through much quicker. It was free for SA, but I believe you may have to pay in other states. 8) Once your state sponsorship comes through you only have 30 days to get your visa applied for. We did ours online and then scanned all the documents and uploaded them. We needed to scan the following all birth certificates, passports, marriage certificates, IELTS certificates, skills assessment certificates. http://www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/general-skilled-migration.htm 9) Let the state you have got sponsored know as they need to get in touch with immigration so you get the extra points for being state sponsored and you get processed quicker. 10) Wait for your application to be allocated to a case officer. 11) Once asked send off for your police checks for all applicants requested this is £35 per person. http://www.acpo.police.uk/NationalPolicing/ACROCriminalRecordsOffice/PoliceCertificates.aspx 12) Once asked book your medicals http://www.immi.gov.au/contacts/overseas/u/united-kingdom/panel-doctors.htm 13) Wait for your visa to come through. hmsmark Posted July 16, 2011 Share Posted July 16, 2011 Awesome post!!!! I have a question, and you look like the perfect person to ask. You said you're a teacher and you got SA state sponsorship. Does SA require you to be registered with TRB as a teacher in SA before they will sponsor you? Or, is your skills assessment from AITSL/Teach Australia enough? The reason why I ask is I applied for Victoria state sponsorship. They sent me an email which said I had to be registered as a teacher in Vic to get sponsorship. The problem is my police check (required for teacher registration) in the US takes 3 months to come back, and then the teacher registration application takes two months, and Vic is only giving me 4 months to get this registration, and it probably isn't going to be done before they reject me. Add onto the fact that the whole point of state sponsorship for me is to SAVE TIME in the process and get to Oz sooner, if SA offers a faster route (as in not requiring registration for sponsorship), I might consider that option. I had to fill in a box to show how I knew that I would be able to get it. It has just reopened and I'm not sure if it is the same, but you only needed your skills assessment and IELTS for SA when I did mine. You can't register with TRB in SA until you are there really, as you need to have done your South Australia First Aid and Mandatory Child training and have the certs for that to register with them, so basically - no - you get registration with SA by sending them your cert from AITSL saying you have a positive assessment as a teacher (along with cp[ies of your passport, IELTS cert, degree and any other qualification certs and work experience proof (12 out of the last 24 months - they said this was optional, but I included it just incase)) We just applied this week, so haven't actually been approved yet, but that was the check list of things they wanted us to send. I realised that they were in the closet(OMG!!)... I saw!!! them 68 days later.. I know this is tragicomic ... After those missing pages were sent, they e-mailed me saying that the 10 week time would restart. I just wonder whether they take their time fully, or not? Do you have any idea? Why do they restart? alexandgail Posted December 22, 2012 Share Posted December 22, 2012 I was told by my migration agent that what I needed was the General IELTS, with a minimum band 7 in each element. We needed to either get state sponsorship or my OH's skills assessed, as we were both just over 35 when we put our visa in we needed the points. Worked out much cheaper and quicker to get state sponsorship than my OH doing the vetasses process. Also saved my OH time and money to get his class A electrical licence when we arrived. You need to check all the state sponsored lists to see who is sponsoring now (SA had a teacher requirement for their secondary teacher sponsorship, which is science, maths, technology teachers only), and if no states are sponsoring directly, apply for the longer to come through 175 (non state sponsored pr visa) if secondary teachers are on the sol for the 175 at the moment. If no to both, you'll need to go sown the 457 route and get a school to sponsor you. Not the easiest thing in the world, but not totally impossible. It is worth it though when you get here Here comes the news: AITSL E-mailed me, saying that they did not requested any extra ocuments, the mail I got was an automated message. Because I have sent extra docs, it would take couple of weeks to sort them. By the way, the online tracking link they have sent me announces "assessment completed. But not the result of the assessment. Mysterious! And asked to allow them 3 weeks for offshore posts. I am waiting now. As soon as I get it, I'll apply for VIC state sponsorship. I am a middle school english and science teacher have cleared my IELTS(academic) with a Band 8 and minimum 7 in each. I have a 3year BSc degree followed by a 1 year teacher training program with 45 days training. Following that I have been employed consistantly in the years 5-8 at reputed schools in India. I have a few questions if you could help 1. Middle schhol( year 5-8) experience is good enough to qualify as a secondary school teacher in Australia? 2. I would need state or employer sponsorship yo UP my points...what states are good to try ( easy to get)? 3. Is it really true that even after landing in Australia we need to get state wise teacher registeration and wait in a queue for jobs? if yes, how long does it normally take to land a job? 4. Do you know anything about how to get employer regional sponsorship? I am waiting to hear some good information from a strong head like yours.." Been there done it all..eh?" wolvesaussie Posted January 17, 2013 Share Posted January 17, 2013 My girlfriend is currently trying to register in Victoria but no one at her university has the authority or ability to give her an official document which states the number of teacher training hours, its so frustrating, why to they need that... they accept the PGCE as a teaching qualification you show you have x years of experience since graduating, why do u need this info grrrrr Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
