Hey Vicky,

great to see you finally arrived and even better to read that you enjoy it. Any news on the job-front and where is the arrival-report :chatterbox: :chatterbox:  ?

Cheerio

Uli

It's been just over 3 weeks and we have hardly had a chance to breathe. Friends put us up and we travelling back and forth from the city all the time to sort things and socialising with them there has been no time for anything else. Last night was the first time we felt able to go out and relax a bit with a walk on the beach.

OH started work this week he had an interview 2 days after we arrived - they put him through a few tests after that so it took a while to be confirmed.

We have just moved into a flat - it echo's a lot as there is nothing much in it other than us.

Hi plannerOH,

Congrats on receiving your SMP grant! I am also a planner and am planning on applying for VIC SMP also. Do you have any tips/advice?

Wow... hard to believe I'm now in the position to give advice-- I've been collecting it in droves these past 3+ months. Of course more than happy to share.

- Make sure your CV is EXHAUSTIVE when it comes to what you've done. It seems that Vic values volume as well as substance. Don't skimp. I am a firm 1-pager when it comes to resumes for US jobs, but this is different. 2-3 pages+ is good, imo. TAKE YOUR TIME and make sure it's spot-on. That document makes or breaks your application.

- On your CV, make sure every single month is accounted for after you received your degree. Explicitly state if there are gaps. Or else they'll likely ask you to correct it (as they asked me to)

- Don't follow up with them to check in. It seems they don't appreciate it.

- According to the amazing Houtomel on this forum, don't apply for other SS (ie WA) while you have a pending Vic application. They may find out and be displeased.

- Apply to VETASSESS for skills qualification asap after lodging SS. It takes forever.. 12+ weeks often times. Meaning if you wait, it's 10-12 weeks for Vic SS + 12 or more for VA, meaning 6 months or more before you can even apply for a visa. Thanks again to Houtomel for this one.

- I took the IELTS (9/9/9/9) and forwarded results to Vic, and two days later received a provisional approval from them (pending a positive skills assessment). Don't know if there was any coincidence or whatever, but I felt it made my application stronger. Speaking of IELTS, make sure you prepare for that one. Way too many stories of native English speakers receiving 7s because they went in blind.

Hope that helps. So very glad I made the decision to apply. Good luck!

Hey DSouzas,

many thanks for adding your details. Unfortunately I have to say that I decided not to continue this thread since I'll be leaving to OZ in some months and won't have much time to look after it.

Maybe you want to open up a new thread.

Best of luck for your application

Uli

Hey Jimmyjay,

congrats buddy. I've just turned you blue. :wubclub:

I'm not sure wheter it's possible to switch a family-sponsored visa into a state-sponsored. The only advice I can give you is to contact the DIAC. Please let us know what they told you:

Thank you very much Uli for your effort in this thread. It was so much help to us. Feel sad to hear about the end of this thread, but everything has an end after all.

I and my OH will visit Melbourne in 2.5 weeks. I will definitely post about our experience as we will stay for 5 weeks. We plan to move in Dec or Jan if our preparations went as planed.

We wish the Vikings who are still waiting a positive result very very soon. And wish all the others the best of luck in their future plans.

And of course, we wish you Uli and your family a happy life in Melbourne.

Cheers,

Ali & Gella

Wow, this is awesome and really helpful. Thanks! Just out of curiosity, what kind of work experience do you have? I noticed on the Vic site that, for planners, they want people with 2 or more years of strategic planning experience, which I have although it's from a consulting perspective.

Hey Uli

Thanks for letting me know! I've found the thread very useful and it has set my expectations at how long it is taking for state sponsorship to be granted, I thought (hoped) it would be a lot quicker ;) good luck with your move to the UK.

Thanks Clare D

No worries.. I have 5 years FT + 2 years PT at a public agency. Have been doing long-range ("strategic") planning for 4-5 years and development review ("statutory planning") for 2-3 years.

You should be totally fine with your experience... I'm sure it doesn't matter whether it's public or private. FWIW, on my CV I listed several of my projects with web links to them so they could investigate further if they wanted to.
