Transporting your car to Oz - everything you need to know!

Hi Craig, I was wondering whether you can answer a question for me.

Is there any restrictions on me importing a car and selling it as soon as I get it to australia - obviously after it gets through customs and is road legal. Or is there as a minimum time you have to keep your car - similar to minimum time you must own it before you import.

my rational, is that i am moving with my partner to melbourne and will likely need to own two cars. I have a nice car (in my eyes) and its looking like it will be more financially feasible to ship it out, sell it, and buy two cheaper cars with the money.

I have a 2008 (57 plate) BMW Z4 2.0L with 50000 miles (80000km). I cant seem to find how much this is worth as no 2.0L Z4's are sold on the links you provide, or i can find. the car is probably worth £9k (~AUD$13.5k) in uk. even with approximately $9000 shipping it appears that my car would be worth more than AUD$22,500.

your expertise view would be most appreciated

Hi Nath,

There is no restriction on selling the car once it's here in Australia, so you could sell it the day it arrives in theory or keep it forever if you choose.

It's hard to give an accurate value to sell this car with a smaller engine than what was sold here in Australia. With this sort of high end brand sports car it would hurt the resale value to have a smaller engine size, so with the market value of a 2500cc version being around $35,000 to $40,000 it would be fair to assume that you could sell yours for around $25,000 to $30,000 without too much trouble as long as it's a nice clean car.

Just wondered if anyone can help. We are moving to Perth in 6 weeks. I have a 1967 MGB that I was planning to sell but last week my shipping bloke suggested we'd be able to put the car in the container with all our furniture, so if that's the case it makes sense to bring her over. I've downloaded the government forms and can fill them out tonight. I just looked on an insurers website and it looks like the annual insurance is approx 8 times the cost in the UK. Does anyone know what classic car insurance costs are in comparison to UK and if we do ship it out, what other costs am I likely to be hit with.

try a specialist such as Shannon's www.shannons.com.au for an insurance quote .

the other costs will be your import duty and probably a valuation fee. Then there will be registration. There is a thread on here where you can get an estimate of costs from Iron Lady imports on the likely costs

even after all the costs it would probably be worth more in Aust than the UK should you decide to sell it. Anyway there are more fine days in Aust to enjoy a car like that.

I live in Lower Chittering , just NE of Perth. I have a 1967 MGB roadster and with 60% NCB pay $360 a year with Shannons.

I moved over from the UK 18 months ago. I made the decision back then that i would not bring my car out to save all the bother (moving house was enough to deal with at the time). Now i regret this decision and have been looking for ways to import a 'nice car' from England.

Through my research i have come accross the 'Specialist & Enthusiast Vehicle Scheme (SEVS)'. Ive read up about how it works, as well as looking at the list of eligible vehicles. I'm interested in purchasing either a Lotus Elise or a TVR Chimera, both of which are on the list.

The whole process gets abit cloudy: "The fact that a vehicle is included on the Register of Specialist and Enthusiast Vehicles does not guarantee it will be able to gain approval to be plated. A vehicle may not be able to satisfy specific ADR requirements even though it meets the requirements set out for eligibility on the Register.

Where a vehicle does not match an entry exactly as detailed, or cannot meet a condition or restriction on an entry, a new Register decision can be sought. An application for eligibility is to be submitted to the Administrator. Application forms are available on this website."

My questions:

1. Is it possible for me to purchase say a TVR Chimera in England and arrange for family to ship from that end, then engage an approved importer in Australia to handle the paperwork etc?

2. Can anyone provide me with some sort of price to handle the import application, plus the GST and registration and cleaning etc etc etc ( I have seen the cost spreadsheet that is available for use if importing under the 'Personal ImportScheme) i.e total cost to be driving the car over here in NSW (Excluding purchase cost and shipping cost).

I really hope this is possible to do....I await your responses!

Cheers

I looked at this a while go. From what I understand you could do this but an importer in OZ will charge you $15,000 for the privilege of doing the import under the SEVS scheme (this is on top of the car, import changes fees etc). Most of the time it turns out to be very little value in doing this unless there is really something in OZ that you can not get OR you are happy paying over the local car prices......

Quick search on UK / OZ web sites. The UK price is around 15,000 pounds, OZ is around $40,000. For the UK car it will cost you about say $8,000 import fees, then say $10,000 for the SEVS service so around almost $40,000AUD......but the imported car under SEVS might have a lower value in OZ and its a BIG hassle / time to do this...... So very little value unless there is something very specific you want you can't get in OZ, probably not worth it...

Hi

Brilliant, at last somewhere where I can get some proper advice about importing a car

I've got dual citizenship (AUS and UK)we are currently 10 months into a 2.5 year stay in the UK,

My father has given me his 1989 Porsche 944S2 cabriolet (in leu of work I've done) to take back to Aus, as this is a 1989 manufactured car I'll have to register it in my name (not a problem) to qualify for the personel import scheme.

Car would be valued at around £5K

However

there's a possibility of doing a swap for a 1989 Porsche 944 turbo BUT this car I believe was manufactured BEFORE 01/01/1989 because it was first registered on 13/01/1989, therefore qualifying for the pre 1989 scheme.

The Turbo is worth around £5K as well

My question is

What are the differences between personel import scheme and pre 1989 scheme in regards to

1/ Costs

2/ complience(cost and hassle)

3/ What would be the total cost of importing

and would either of these cars be worth it, as the purchase price is pretty much zero.

BUT I wont be selling(in the UK) and pocketing the money if I don't import into Aus

Thank you in advance

Steve

Hi Steve, welcome! It's relatively easy to work out the build date on a Porsche via the VIN - if you send me a private message with the VIN of the cabriolet, I can advise you of the best options.

Hi, I just wanted to give a bit of feedback re Iron Lady and importing your vehicle to Aus-

i cannot recommend Craig at Iron Lady enough- we shipped our Nissan Primastar crew cab van to Perth at the end of Nov 2012. It arrived in perfect condition last Friday! Yippee!!

Craig and his team were awesome- helpful, knowledgeable and very patient with my numerous questions and panic attacks!

if anyone is wondering whether or not to do it, my advise is DO IT! With Craig on your team you will have no worries and it is a very good and sound financial decision. Craig will guide you through the maze of Australian legislation and provide invaluable advice should you encounter any problems.

Thanks Craig for all your help- it was a good decision to use your services!

Just want to ask th Iron Chef the following

My wife and I are going to be moving to Melbourne in September and we want to ship both of our cars as personal imports. My car is a fully restored classic mini which I have owned for 7 years (it is a 1990 so cant come in under the pre 89 scheme) and my wife’s is a Nissan Figaro which she will have owned for 12 months in august. I have looked up all the rules and bar some slight mods for the SVA test such as child restraint mounts I don’t see any problems with getting permits to import these cars. We are not bringing them to resell them we are just attached to them and want to keep them hence shipping them. Do you envisage any problem with shipping both of them under the personal import scheme?

Thank you

You should both be fine with those cars. There aren't many Figaros in Australia, so your wife's car will be one of a handful!

Email sent Craig

Hi Mike,

We certainly can help with the process even if the bike is shipped in a container with your household goods, basically you would arrange with your relocation company to load and ship the bike along with everything else, then we can work with them to oversee the process at this end. I would be happy to calculate the likely costs involved once it hits Australia for you if you can provide the following by email .. please send to me at craig@ironladyimports.com:

- year of manufacture

- make, model & variant

- exact engine size

- current mileage

- any special features, options or modification

- realistic current market value

- a copy of the registration V5 paperwork

- at least one photo of the bike

Cheers,

I am on holiday in the uk at present and have noticed how cheap cars are here. Is there any way of getting one of these babies back over to oz cost effectively? I am talking about a "normal" car not a prestige one.

john

Hi John,

If you wanted to buy a car built in 1988 or earlier then you should have no problem getting approval to import that to Australia under the 'Pre-1989' scheme, otherwise newer models must be on the SEVS list which is typically high performance or otherwise specialist vehicles. The only exception to these laws and the main purpose of our business is to help import cars under the Personal Import Scheme which allows you to import any car regardless of make or model as long as you have owned and used it yourself while living outside Australia for at least 12 months before moving back to live in Australia. If you are going to be there for at least the next 12 months then we can help you work out a good car to buy otherwise if you are coming back to Australia sooner then there would be no way unfortunately.

Thanks Iron Chef and Craig for a very informative thread. Sorry that the Iron Lady has passed away today.

I’m an Aussie on a working VISA in the UK currently. I’ll be working here for 12 months so have the opportunity to bring 2 cars (myself + wife) back to Aust when I move back in 2014. I have a few questions that are a bit curly and hopefully someone will know the answer. Sorry for long post.

  1. I understand that it’s usually ok for both cars to be registered under my name here but there is no guarantee. So it’s safer if one car is registered to each of us?
  2. Does the law specify what type of VISA the 12 months qualifying period has to be under? Say I travelled to Europe for 1 month during my 12 month working VISA period and thus have only used the car for 11 months. At the end of my working VISA if I continued to stay in the UK as a visitor for another 2 months and thus have owned and used the car in the UK for 13 months in total. Is this acceptable?
  3. If I travelled out of UK on a Saturday and returned the next day (Sunday), is it counted as 2 days away or counted as none? I know they are strict with the 12 month rule and I'm planning on playing by the book. However I plan to make many weekend trips to Europe and how this is counted will determind how long I have to stay in the UK after my contract is finished to "serve the time".
  4. If I travelled out of UK (say to France) but I drove my car with me on a driving holiday, is this still deducted from the 12 months period as being “out of the country”?
  5. I’m getting a new 2013 Porsche 911 Carrera to bring back to Aust to keep for many years. I think this is a no brainer (Luxury Car Tax will hurt!). For the second car I have £40,000 - £60,000 (possibly 80k at a stretch) to spend on a car to bring back to Aust and sell for profit.

I’m considering a few cars:

2010 Porsche 911 - £45k = AUD66k. Redbook 130-140k (66/130=50.7%)

2011 Porsche Panamera Diesel - £53k = AUD78k. Redbook 148-160k (52.7%)

2008 Porsche 911 GT2 - £85k = AUD125k. Redbook 221-240k (56.6%)

2007 Porsche 911 GT3 - £60k = AUD88k. Redbook 133-145k (66%)

2010 Aston Martin Rapide - £80k = AUD117k. Redbook 225-241k (52%)

Any suggestions on what to buy? I know Iron Chef has suggested high end cars (eg GT3s) in previous posts. However I’m concerned that the Luxury Car Tax and the difficulty in selling them might kill the deal. I’m open to suggestions though!

Thanks!

Kenny

Hi Kenny, and welcome.

In order:

1. Safer yes, but not a big drama either way, assuming your wife is living at the same address as you!

2. No, it doesn't matter what visa you're on while you're overseas if you're an Aussie.

3. They generally allow about 2 weeks' grace before they start adding more time on to the 12-month qualifying period. Even then, it's just a matter of adding a few extra days on to the total time owned before being approved. If they're work trips, they won't be deducted if your work can provide some evidence to prove you were overseas for work purposes.

4. If you take the car overseas with you, then that time is not deducted from the 12 months, as you obviously own and are using the car. Just keep any paperwork to show you were actually using it.

5. I would aim for a Porsche higher up the food chain (turbo, GT3 etc) that's a few years old as it will have taken a big depreciation hit already. We can discuss this via email if you prefer.

Bear in mind that LCT is only applied to the LANDED value of the vehicle, not the market value, and that the valuation is done when it arrives. What this generally means is that the prices listed on the valuation end up a good deal lower than the market value, reducing or eliminating LCT.

Hi just wander can you ship your car to oz if you still have payments on it and want to still make payments.

No you can't. You would need to pay out any loans before you left.

Hello Christian

I have read many of your very useful posts but have perhaps a different set of specifics.

My wife is Australian and is planning to move back to Aus with the children in 18 months time. I will come out for three months at a time initially so not on a spousal visa. We are contemplating buying a car - in her name of course - to sell soon after her arrival. I am thinking of a 911 996 because the price differential is significant (£15,000 to AUD70,000) but I was intrigued by your comment that some cars can only get to the Aus market by being imported and so have a greater premium. Would you have a list of those or is this something I should pick up with you directly by email?

Thank you

Dom

Hello, I wonder if you can help.

I am currently living in the UK and looking to relocating to Brisbane within the next year.

I was weighing up exporting my car with me, and either keeping it - or selling it for profit. However, i can only see one example of my car for sale ATM - and that hasn’t sold in the past 2 months i have been watching it…. There here:

http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/honda-integra-2002-12074689?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=0&eapi=2&__N=1216%201246%201247%201252%201282%204294965322%204294965105&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=Price

My car is JDM Honda Integra Type-R DC5.. I understand you have AUDM DC5 car, which is however lacking on most accounts.

Do you think a low millage DC5 is worth exporting?

Also, how many years behind are Australia in the import of JDM cars? here in the UK we had access to the FD2 JDM Type-r in 2007, where as i have been unable to find a single one for sale on any Australian used car website.

Here is a pic of my car:

how long does valuation and customs clearance normally take after car arrives in port?

It can vary based on a number of things including how it was shipped (sole use container, container with household goods or roll-on/roll-off), which shipping line it was with, which port it's coming into in Australia, etc. but usually around 10-25 days would be a fair ballpark. Some cases can be a little quicker and others will take longer but without know all of the details you can only really work with a ballpark range.

Hi Ali,

I believe that we got the DC5 Type-R here around 2001-2004 but they were lover spec and much less desirable than overseas models. I am not sure why they were so weak compared to the JDM models but I am sure Honda Australia had their reasons. I guess a side effect of this was that they didn't sell many so there will not be a lot around for sale, and also because they were sold here in Australia you are not allowed to import them through other channels normally. The only exception being if you qualify under the Personal Import Scheme which is how this one example you have found was imported also.

The reason this example you found hasn't sold is most likely down to the price. I think that this 2002 Honda Integra Type-R should be worth around $15,000 if it was an Australian new car, so being the higher specification JDM model it could be somewhere around $18,000 to $22,000 but either way I think the sellers asking price of $32,500 is just crazy.

If you wanted us to do some calculations on the likely costs to bring your car to Australia then please fill out the form on our website at http://www.ironladyimports.com/cost-estimate then it's possible to work out if it's worthwhile bringing it with you for sure.
