Anae
I just came across this site as I have also been caught out by these ludicrous fees & am trying to find ways to avoid them again. I had no idea what was involved when all I wanted to do was was send my son in London a parcel of some of his things. So there really is a difference in sending some personal belongings compared to sending a "gift"! A very expensive lesson learnt! I would have thought Australia Post would have said something as a reminder but then again dealing with Aust Post......don't get me started! So for Xmas it's 1 small parcel posted 1 at a time. I guess it could be exciting receiving a few little parcels every now & then....just like Santa leaving presents under the tree! Merry Xmas everyone! :)

Don't declare the proper cost of the gift - so if you send something thats worth $70 fill in the customs form as $

That I can't tell you, I just used to put Gift and a value of $20 or below.
Marisawright
It used to be that if you marked them as used goods and valued them as NCV (no commercial value), there was nothing to pay. I haven’t posted anything for song time though

Purely goes on the value of the parcel. Be warned if you do trigger the limit, as well has VAT and Import Duty, the receiver will also incur a Royal Mail/Parcel Farce "admin" fee. I think they are now up to 11 quid or so.
