  1. Hi All I am not sure if people are aware of the charges by customs in the UK for gifts sent to family and friends. I have lived here for 6 years and posted (as you may imagine) many presents over this time. The last few i have been late sending so used Express Courier International. This is a 'quick' service which has proved to be a joke! They are suppised to take around 3 working days, each one i have sent has taken at least 2 weeks! They get held up at the sorting office, then when tracking it states 'delivery attempted' NO CARD IS LEFT, then when they do deliver they take to to any neighbour who happens to be in and get them to sign for it! Very secure NOT!!!! Anyway, i paid $80 to send my sisters 50th birthday presents on 1 October, they got held in customs and she has had to pay VAT and clearance fees on her present. Apparently these fees have always been there (even though there have never been charges before), so i have checked into this, after speakng with a 'stroppy Essex Girl' at Romford ( and i am from Essex so this is not a dig), who told me to call customs and then calling customs 10 times (from Brisbane at 11.41pm so i am tired and feeling stroppy) only to be constantly cut off as soon as the call goes through - i can hear them talking to each other!!!!! :arghh: I have found the following: 2.3 What are the limits for customs duty and import VAT? Commercial consignments of £18 or less are free from customs duty and import VAT. For example, goods purchased over the internet with an intrinsic value not exceeding £18, will not be charged any duty or VAT but this does not include alcohol, tobacco products, perfume or toilet waters, see paragraph 2.5, 2.6 and section 3. If you are sent a gift with a value of £36 or less, and which complies ,with the rules shown in paragraph 2.4. it will be free from customs duty and import VAT, but this does not include alcohol, tobacco, perfumes and toilet waters. Customs duty becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £120 but duty is waived if the amount of duty calculated is less than £7. There are a number of other circumstances where relief from some or all customs charges may be available. If you think your goods may be eligible for a relief you should contact the Helpline for further information. top ^ 2.4 Gifts Goods sent as a gift that are over £36 in value are liable to import VAT. Customs duty also becomes payable if the value of the goods is over £120 but is waived if the amount of duty calculated is less than £7. To qualify as a gift: the customs declaration must be completed correctly the gift must be sent from a private person outside the EU to a private person(s) in this country there is no commercial or trade element and the gift has not been paid for either directly or indirectly the gift is of an occasional nature only, for example, for a birthday or anniversary. Please note if you purchase goods from outside the EU to give as a gift to a relative or friend, whether or not addressed to that person, is treated as a ‘commercial consignment’ for which the import VAT relief threshold is £18 (paragraph 2.3 refers). top ^ 2.5 Do gifts of alcohol and tobacco products qualify for relief from import duties and import VAT? NO. Excise duty is payable on all alcohol and tobacco products regardless of whether they are a gift. Oh, and to top it all, she arrives here on Monday for a 3 week holiday so i should have just held them till she arrived! So, in future i will be sending several small parcels, all under 18 pounds in value or otherwise just lie about the value!! Rant over Cheryl
  2. Hi Not sure if anyone is able to advise on this, but I have been advised by a friend in NZ to move all assets over from the UK to Oz within 4 years, otherwise we could be taxed up to 40%, is this just for New Zealand or Oz as well. Thanks
  3. I have looked and looked but I just can't see an answer to this on the immi.gov.au site so any help would be great. My friend is also applying for a 309/100 visa and she was told by Australia House that her 2.5yr old child could just be put on her application and there is no separate fee. I was under the impression that it was a separate visa so my 5 nrly 6yr old child would need his own visa/own medicals etc and incur a separate fee. He is my child not biologically my husbands but my husband does have parental responsibility for him. Who is right? Would really like it to be her! Ta
  4. HI, Im a little worried about my case. I want to apply to Working Holiday Visa in Australia, but I have a crminial charge in my record. Its was not a conviction, it was a Withheld Adjudication. I would like to know If still have to declare it on past convction on the application form? (even if it was not a conviction) The charge was cannabis possession (2 years ago) less than 20g. I had no imprisoment time, only had to pay a fine and I paid it. The case is Closed! It happens in the US while my visiting. Only one time, never had any other kind trouble. I would like to know if this would implie upon my visa application or if I could get the visa refused because of it. Seriously waiting on some answers. :err: Thanks all posters in advance.

  6. Hi guys, Just looking at which bank to go with here in AUS and as i will be using MoneyCorp i was wondering what charges (if any) people have encountered when transferring money in and out of the counry (to/from the UK) with the AUS banks.... ...I have ben thinking about going with Commenwealth Bank but not really sure.... It states on their website they charge $22 for international money transfers but i'm unsure if this would be charged if going through MoneyCorp Cheers Roflie
  7. What the hell were the 'leaders' at the time thinking when they employed a person who likes the odd tipple to white line their country. WTF happened between the border of Victoria and NSW. I realise that it must have been one hell of a job, but there is no excuse for the dereliction of duty shown when such an important job had to be done, hiccup, excuse me. Cheers Tony.
  8. Pretty much as it says. I'll be depositing over $2k a month, so I'm not fussed about the $5 monthly fee, but is there a bank in oz that doesnt charge you for using other banks cash points? cheers!!
  9. Hello all just putting the final stages to our visa application and hopefully ready to send off paper application next week, just one thing is stumping me how easy is it to pay the application fee when you do not have a credit card, have a debit card which they won't accept with a paper app, thought of getting a bankers draft raised but should that be in dollars or sterling and which banks will they accept a cheque from. Again am aware that personal cheques are a no go. Any advice would be ssoo helpful right now and much appreciated !!!!!! TT xx
  10. I've found it - the one stage in the whole nightmare that is the visa process that is quick no fuss and free! But get this - it is LITERALLY the very very last bit. On Saturday I posted our passports to the Australian High Commission and yesterday (Wednesday) they came back with our visas attached. Yes, that's right, not counting the days when it was in the post it took less than 2 days to do! There was no form to fill in - just a cover letter asking them to affix our visas. No charge (other than the costs of special delivery of our passports). And that was it. Done!

    No Charge....!

Over many months maybe over a yr or so when we have had to , we have have asked our eldest for the odd $5, $10 and so on when we have no cash on us.....now she keeps reminding me that i/we owe her $86.!!!!!!!! so tonight i sat her down and said ,honey please listen to this and take it in ... YouTube - JJ BARRIE - No Charge (1976) after being silent for almost 4mins watching the track while im stood cooking their tea she came over and said "Daddy, you still owe me $86" .....i had to laugh ,she gotta be a business women when she`s older............. this old track has always brought a tear to my eye as i was probs hard work as a child at times but i turned out to be a good bloke ........managed to give drugs a wide berth , just never agread with me , just enjoyed the beer ..........and laughs .....boy do i miss them days /nights ........
  12. I know this form is free from DEFRA but my vet is trying to charge me £65 to complete it! They said this was the price for my two dogs as they can share it.....but my understanding is that each dog needs a separate form! So thats £130 to fill in 2-forms that literally require a few boxes being ticked and a few dates!! Seems a bit extortionate! The original quote they gave me for everything was around £500, to date I have paid £600 and this doesn't include this or worming tablets! Told them to go away and look in to it as I do not want to pay that!

    Port Service Charge

Hi all! After some help / advice.... We've been waiting for hand over of our shipment of furniture etc for what feels like forever now! Anyway, finally heard today that it has all been cleared and can be delivered or collected from Thursday. The company have sent me their bill ....which includes over AU$1700 for 'Port Service Charge'!!! The shipping agent we used in the Uk did tell us that there would be fees to pay this end, but he never quoted anywhere in the region of that much! The total bill is AU$2400 when you add in Customs and AQIS charges!! Just wondering if anyone has been through this and knows what it is for and if we can query it?? We had 3 pallets, approx 8 cubic metres, of furniture and personal effects, shipped in a joint container with others. Thanks in advance, Shelagh
  14. I am just wondering if that is still possible, my 885 application is from 8/2008. Thanks
  15. Hi all.. Hope someone may be able to help me.. Just recieved a case officer after 2 years (175 applied Dec 08) I have just recieved my police check from Ireland and there is an old charge of assault from 13 years ago. I was fined but no conviction was recorded but it still shows on my check. My former agent (the useless Liveinaustralia.com) told me I don't have to declare it as I was not convicted just charged. Now I am naturally worried that it may look like I was trying to hide it. Anybody had the sme problems... grateful for any advice...:policeman::policeman:
  16. The plans for our house are just about to be finalised. (situated in Lilydale East of Melbourne) We have incorporated a self contained unit with separate entrance. It will have its own bathroom and kitchenette, situated near a huge park and lake. Pets would be welcome. We will have a futher 2 large double rooms to let within the house like a B&B I suppose. We are new to this and was wondering if anyone had any idea on what a fair price would be for the self contained unit and a room? Thanks in advance. PS I don't want to charge the earth just what is a fair price. looking at some of the prices that other people charge for short term accommodation is embarassing and shocking in my opinion. It appears that when people are desperate for accommodation landlords have got us by the 'short and curlies'' as there is rarely no other option. Staying in a hotel or B&B would be the cheaper option.
  17. Good Evening/Morning. I've been a reader of Poms in oz for sometime and must say it's a very valuable source of opinions. Keep up the good work people. I've got a really quick question, and i don't expect their to be a black and white answers but any opinions are appreciated. I've been on a 457 visa in Oz 21 months and can apply for PR after i've been here for 2 years, so only 3 months to go. I've never been in trouble with the law and had a clean record my whole life until yesterday. I got in a scuffle (after to much drink which is totally out of character for me) and was charged with being Drunk or Disordely.:chatterbox: I was told at the police station:policeman: that it's a minor offence and won't affect my PR application, but after reading a few posts i've got a little nervous. My understanding is that i need to pass the character test which covers this, this will show up the D&D on the police record. A person will fail the character test where: they have a substantial criminal record they have, or have had, an association with an individual, group or organisation suspected of having been, or being, involved in criminal conduct having regard to the person's past and present criminal conduct, the person is found not to be of good character having regard to the person's past and present general conduct, the person is found to be not of good character there is a significant risk that the person will engage in criminal conduct in Australia, harass, molest, intimidate or stalk another person in Australia, vilify a segment of the Australian community, or incite discord in the Australian community or in a segment of that community, or represent a danger to the Australian community or a segment of that community. See: Fact Sheet 78 - Controversial Visa Applicants I'm hoping with only a minor charge and normally of good character (hopefully supported by recently joining the SES and being a volunteer feeding the homeless) i'm hoping i shouldn't have any serious problems (i guess it's down to the case handler) has anyone experienced anything similiar or know anything else regarding this? thanks for your time in advance.
  18. Hi All - 1st post I am close (very close) to being offered an internal transfer to Newcastle, Australia. I am a little concerned about two things though. 1st 5 years ago my brother and I were attacked by a group of boys whilst on a night out and in self defense I fought back to protect myself and my brother- when the police arrived my brother and I were arrested as a witnessed (wrongly) told the police that we were the attackers. Anyway to cut a long story short we were taken to the police station and charged to appear in court for assault - a trial followed and it was quickly agreed by the courts that we had no charges to face and were cleared/acquitted of our charges... So, do I have criminal record because I was arrested even though the courts through out the charge and will this affect my application on a 457 business visa 2nd point. I was arrested and charged with drink driving also 5 years ago with out a full driving license- wait till you here this story. I got a phone call one Monday evening saying my dad had a massive heart attack and that he was in an ambulance being taken to hospital. I had just bought a car in anticipation of my driving test which I was due to sit in 10 days time and when I got the call from my mother I wrongly made the foolish decision to jump into the car and drive to the hospital. I was stopped by the police and told I had not switched my lights on and asked were I was going? It then transpired that they found out I did not have a full license and thus they breath tested me. when asked if I had been drinking I said I had had two cans of Stella whilst watching the TV and then got the call from my mum and thus how I came to end up wrongly driving the car... Anyway just my luck I was something like 55mm of alcohol in my system and you are only at that time allowed something like 50mm so I got done for drinking driving? Will this be classed as a criminal record and go against my 457 business visa application? Thanks in advance for all your help
  19. 12 years ago my husband pleaded guilty to GBH and paid a fine. This conviction is spent so we have gotten character references at the advice of our agent. will it affect our 175 application? This is the only criminal record:smile:
  20. Just sold my house using one of the parasitic Oz real estate agents. Not moaning, as they're about on par with the ones in the UK. Apart from the crazy astronomical charges here, wondered why there are so many. Enough said! Can I claim back the 10% GST charged on the transaction, as I am soon returning to sunny Manchester? Cheers John
  21. Hi there I am back again with another question. I am applying for a cpv can I pay the visa charges at Austrialia House in London, or does it have to be to the Perth office. I am a UK citizen. Thanks Wilma (clubby67)
  22. hi there, does anyone know if a decent bank to use that does not charge for every single thing?? We live in Syndey and even though Westpac are very friendly and helpful they charge us for everything! I am not used to this, my bank at home did not charge for anything. It is more important here to save every penny (or cent!) as i am a student this year and not earning at all. Thanks!!

    Migrant Health Services Charge

Is the Migrant Health Services Charge included in the visa charge for CPV or do we have to pay $1363 per person extra? Any clarification would be great... Link to Costs...Parent Visa Charges Thanks Nick x
  24. Have submitted all our medicals and police checks but OH,s police check came back as case pending. He was stopped and breathalised on Sat 16th Aug. Gave blood because reading was borderline. Didn,t hear anything, thought he was ok. Got police check done and it has case pending for DD charge. We won,t be granted any visa until the outcome of the case is decided. Does anyone know how long we will have to wait ? I thought these kind of charges were dealt with quickly.
