Practicalities of hiring a campervan - Help!

We are hiring a 6 berth campervan (family of 4) for our reccie in April (Easter), to travel from Sydney to Brisbane over 10 days (first 4 days of hol are in Melbourne). Wanted to see the real Oz & get a feel for cooking for ourselves, prices of food etc, but have a few questions about the more mundane side of camping. So if anyone with previous experience can answer some/all of them it would be appreciated!

1. Do we really need to prebook campsites? Am concerned with us travelling right over the Easter break that we won't get in anywhere.

2. Do we really need to be on a campsite every night? (with planning to drive most of day it should charge up 2nd battery enough to last overnight(?) - so main reason for stopping on site is to fill up/empty water, and use facilities for decent shower)?

3. If not on a campsite where are we allowed to park up? (or where are we NOT allowed to park?) Can anyone recommend any free sites en route? (I read on another thread that councils have free sites - how do I find out about these?)

4. How long on average would the water tank last? (ours will be approx 90L)

5. how often does waste water need emptying? (approx150L) and is this straight forward?

6.how long does a gas cylinder last?

If anyone has any additional hints & tips, or links to useful websites it would be very gratefully received!

Thanks

Kath

Hiya

We spent two weeks driving brisbane to Rockhampton and back over easter 05, we didnt book any campsites and managed to stay at every one we wanted to, we even fitted in a trip to Fraser Island on Easter Sunday.

So envious of you as we had an amazing time and would love to do it again

Thanks guys!

Any useful info is always appreciated - want to make the most out of the trip that we can, so the more we know, the better prepared we can be.

Re: Easter hols - have already been advised by two of the sites I enquired at (Emerald Bay, Coffs & one in Byron bay) that they are already booked though. Is this possibly coz they're so popular? As we're not particularly bothered about using ALL the facilities (ie pools, gyms or whatever else they offer) as we won't be on each one long enough, I guess we could probably go to the smaller (& hopefully cheaper ones?)

  • 1 month later...

Hi, we rented a six berth camper from apollo in january & drove from Melbourne to Sydney, the new year period is extremely busy & while we managed to get a site every day we did not always have power hook ups but topping up with water & emptying waste tanks was never a problem ( we were told to leave the grey water tank drain valve open all the time ) & the toilet tank was small but easy & not too unpleasant to empty.

The van will have site guides in it & we would work out each evening where we wanted to get to the next day & phone around to book an available site.

The van had 2 gas cylinders in it & after 17 days we had not emptied the first one so that should not be a problem for you.

All of the sites had really good BBQ areas which were always clean & available even on the busy sites

hope you have a good trip we loved it which is why we are now on here & looking to move!

Cheers... Rob

Thanks - have now booked sites for most nights to be on safe side. Was hoping to be a bit more ad hoc, & travel at own pace etc, but as we have so much to cram in I guess we need some form of schedule!

first off. get your self a routine for getting settled for the nite and for breakfast . tempers can flair very fast if bags chairs are in the way while your trying to cook/wash/getting ready to travel in the morning /settling down for the nite .make sure eveyone knows what they are expected to do and it should go smoothly
