hi there - does anyone happen to know when the half term is in Feb/march 09 for Adelaide schools?

we are looking at coming over in Feb/march and trying to time it for the school half term so the kids will have some time to settle before starting at school.

thanks

Nikki

Hi Nikki

We are heading for Adelaide at the same time! The new school year only starts in Feb as far as I am aware.

With 4 term years they dont have a half term unless there is a public holiday in which case they just usually take the day. Terms very generally seem to be about 10 weeks each although the first term can be shorter and usually depends on the timing of Easter. Adelaide Cup is 9 March so the kids will have that day off but then it is straight through to Easter on 9 April. So basically, no half term holidays (except perhaps in Tas where they still have 3 term years).

Edited to say, it doesnt matter when your kids start school, you can take as much or as little time as you need for them to settle and it doesnt matter if that is in term time or not - no one would bat an eyelid at them being out for an extra week or even two weeks while you found your feet.

Yes the term usually goes 11-10-10-10 give or take a few weeks here and there depending on Easter, term four last year was 9 weeks term 1 was 11. Some of the private schools vary their dates a little.

Teachers get such long holidays!!! :biglaugh:

Last year we just had Good Friday and Easter Monday off, the holidays don't always fall around the Easter break.

Yes, I hear that some teachers in private schools actually do little more than sit on their flat tinny ar$e$ and drink hot water all day...term-time and holidays alike. Hmmn...

It seems pretty weird at first, but you'd be surprised how quickly you get used to it although the first and last terms seem the longest regardless of how many weeks we have! That's speaking as an SSO/teacher's aide/parent, I'm too industrious to be say, a science teacher...

 to the OP and co. :tongue:to Tinny.

Lazy if you were a science teacher I would run for cover from the flying cow-pats and exploding udders! Not to mention the paint-stripping milk shakes (there's a lot to be said for water).

With regards to the schools, just another little bit of information that may be helpful, to attend a public school you have to be in the correct zone or your child needs to obtain a scholarship to a popular public school if it is not in your zone. Private schools you can live anywhere, but some charge very large fees depending on the school, however there are some very reasonably priced private schools. Each year private school have scholarship exams that children can sit for a fee. Catholic private schools do take a small percentage of non-catholics.
