186 Visa for Management Consultants

Hi all,

I am just starting my journey for the ENS 186 TRT visa, under Management Consultant (224711) and I was wondering if there are people in this forum who could share their experience of progressing through / getting the visa.

My organization just verbally agreed to sponsor me after nearly 3 years of work with them under TSS 482 Medium Term (4 year) visa. I am trying to prepare myself as much as possible before they initiate the process. Any suggestions is welcome.

Also, I had a particular question regarding the differences between 186 Direct Entry (DE) and 186 Temporary Residence Transition (TRT). How do the employer choose between them? What are the differences in the process and costs? I have been working for 3 years and 186 TRT seems the obvious choice, but I was wondering what would stop them for going for 186 DE instead. Does 186 DE needs more documents / costs? Is the process easier or more difficult? Longer or shorter that 186 TRT?

How many years work experience as a management consultant do you have overall?

The skills assessment for the DE will require you have at least 8years, and that might dictate which route they have to take when sponsoring you

Thank you so much for your response. 

I have overall 8+  years of experience, 5+ overseas and 3 in Melbourne from July. I was also thinking about trying my luck at 189/190 so I reached out to VETASSESS and already got a positive skills certificate from them.

Is this the only difference in requirement you know of? Or are there others as well? Any suggestion will be helpful.

If you have a positive skills assessment you don't lose anything by posting a 190/189 application, and it doesn't stop the employer opting to start a sponsorship visa either.

When I put my 190 application into NSW back in 2019 (for Mangement Consultant) I had an offer to apply within 24 hours, that may not be the case now though, but it does show that you may as well try - after all if you aren't invited it has cost you nothing and you can still go down the sponsor route (I beleive the sponsor route might be a quicker path to getting the actual visa though - an agent could advise better)

Yes. That is a good suggestion. I will probably do it. My concern is that I will not have enough points as per the current situation. But, I guess applying for 189/190 does not hurt.

The Management Consultant role is a weird one, it's very hard to get a positive result from ANZSCO for it as it requires so much experience and also degree level quals, so by the time you have done the degree and the qual you are already over the "age point sweet-spot"

 

This doesn't help for a 189, but for a 190 it means there are very few qualified applicants so if the state wants a MC they have to pick from what they have.

I had 70 points in 2019 (including the sponsor 5 points) when I applied, and I was offered a chance to apply for sponsorship 24 hours after I put the EOI in.

So don't let points totals put you off in this case

Direct entry has a shorter published processing time, but has more requirements (skills assessment+ 3 years), so more costs. It will really depend on the circumstances as to what is best for you.

Interesting to hear about the year long qual.

I don't suppose you know what would be a highly relevant degree would be, as a MBA from Oxford Said (the #1 MBA course in the UK) still requires the 8 years experience

This is really great to learn! It was NSW, right?

For the 190, do I have to apply for each state individually?

I don't think universities matter. Do they? I thought it is only the degree like a Masters or an MBA. Is there any article or section in the immigration website that I can look into for this specific piece of information?

My point here was if the best MBA possible isn't enough to lower the experience years required, what other more relevant course is there?

 

In terms of applying, you apply to each state independently, but you shouldn't... You should only apply to one, they can see you applying to more than one state and they all then ignore you because you aren't committed to coming to their state.

Masters don’t add points doctorates do. Experience is always post qualification. Give me an intelligent person with lots of experience over lots of qualifications any day.

It will depend on many factors including the Major and subjects studied for the qualification. Management Consultant is highly scrutinised by the assessing authority. 

The level of qualification is not a factor as it just needs to be a Bachelor qualification or higher.

I have made no mention of 8 years experience, that was someone else.

My comment was referring to the Assessing Authority requirement for the skills assessment only.

Employment requirements for visa purposes will vary greatly depending on what you are applying for.

Thank you so much all. I have started the journey with my workplace. For someone who would read this thread later, it turned out that at the 3 year mark 2 things are additionally needed in 186 DE in my case.

1. A positive skills assessment (for Management Consultants, it is from VETASSES), which is not needed for 186 TRT. This involves costs, as VETASSES charges around 1,000 for the assessment.

2. A letter from the sponsoring organization justifying the genuine need for the role in their organogram for them to function properly. This is not needed for 186 TRT as it was already justified at the 482/457 visa stage.

The additional requirement of these 2 documents makes 186 DE a slightly lengthier process, and 186 TRT is more streamlined with the sponsoring organization. The applicant is not needed to be working under a 457 or a 482 visa for 3 years for the organization in case of DE, so in my case it could have been faster. But, given current timeline I will be eligible for 186 TRT anyway by the time we are ready to lodge, so may be we will be pursuing TRT.
