Lung
I'm at the very early stage of looking into emigrating to Australia (Adelaide) under a 190 or 489 VISA, and have plenty of points to do so. The big stumbling block seems to be my health. I have Cystic Fibrosis, which will obviously last for the rest of my life. Does the reciprocal medical arrangement between the UK and Australia come into play here, or is it only for short visits? My health is generally good, and I have a full time job and would expect to have a full working life ahead of me as my CF is well controlled. Any info would be very gratefully received, as I don't want to go through the expense of the skills assessment, medical and visa application only to find I could never have qualified due to my health. Marisawright
You would be best advised to engage a MARA registered agent who has experience dealing with health issues. When deciding whether to grant you a visa, Immigration will consider what you're likely to cost the Australian health system over your lifetime. There is a threshold, and if you go above that threshold, you will not be accepted. I have no idea what the limits are, no doubt someone will come along with more information.
Lung
Thank you for your reply. I've had a look at the list of MARA agents, is there any way to tell which ones are medical specialists, or is it a case of contacting each of them and asking? Both Peter Bollard and George Lombard are highly recommended for medical issues.
Quoll
It’s not Medicare that’s going to be your issue but whether or not you can get a visa. If you get a permanent visa then you’re entitled to Medicare. If you’re unfortunate enough to only get a temporary visa, there is no guarantee that you would get PR and if you are relying on the reciprocal agreement that doesn’t cover everything, only medically necessary interventions and what you may consider necessary might not be what the Medicare schedule thinks necessary. The above two agents are usually recommended and I believe Richard Gregan also has medical specialists working with him too.

Lung
I've emailed all 3 suggested migration agents to see if any of them have specific experience of migrating people with CF. Fingers crossed, and thanks again for the suggestions.
Lung
I just spoke to Richard Gregan on the phone. It's not an instant no but it's not sounding great. Incidentally, he seems like a very nice chap.
