vikki2010 Posted October 12, 2017 Share Posted October 12, 2017 Hi everyone, I'm currently in my second year of my 3 year degree (BA Hons) in Early Childhood Studies. There are a small group of us who are doing Early Childhood Studies with Early Years Teacher Status, which we had to pass the QTS tests to get onto, and I think is a reasonably new thing. Now that we've started our second year, we are starting with the EYTS part and getting our teaching portfolios together. My plan since starting at uni has been to finish this course, then go on to do a PGCE in Early Years, giving me the 4 years required for the 189. On speaking to my tutor this week, I have found out that the PGCE in Early Years is the same thing as the Early Years Teacher Status that we are doing alongside the degree! So basically I think I need to drop back and just do the Early Childhood Studies degree and then go onto the PGCE for my forth year. The main thing that worries me is from looking at the universities website, the Early Years PGCE is only classed as part-time? Would this matter if I am still getting the required amount of teaching days? (I'm not sure if it's only classed as part-time because it is only 1 day in uni but 4 days in a setting). My tutor has also suggested I stick with the course but then do a primary PGCE, as then I'll have covered all bases, which may be the case for the UK but I'm sure I've read that for the skills assessment the PGCE must be Early Years based? She has advised me to speak to the Aus government about what to do and try to get something in writing, but from looking at the AITSL website they won't advise on courses because the requirements change so much, so I have no idea who I can ask for advice, so if anyone could give me any guidance I would appreciate it so much! Been trying to look into it all day online and still haven't got any closer to finding an answer, it's all so confusing. TeacherClem Posted October 12, 2017 Share Posted October 12, 2017 I may be very wrong so I’m sorry if that’s the case and please ignore this post, but if you’ve done a teaching degree, would you really need to do a PGCE afterwards? Surely a PGCE is for people who have a degree and then want to become a teacher so add the teaching qualification on afterwards. Areyousure Posted October 13, 2017 Share Posted October 13, 2017 Yep, would be much better for you to a masters or another level 5/6/7 diploma after your pgce. So basically if I stop the EYTS part (there are only a small group of us who are doing this on top of the degree) and drop down to just the degree, which is Early Childhood Studies, it's not a specific teaching degree. It can lead to a lot of pathways, for example there are people on the course who want to go on to be social workers, play therapists etc as well as working in schools and nurseries. I will have a look into doing a Masters as well though. Remember, there is no guarantee your occupation will still be eligible by the time you come to apply. Hayley Posted February 1, 2018 Share Posted February 1, 2018 Hi Vikki, I am an Early Years teacher migrating to Australia in August. Please do your PGCE, it gives you qualified teacher status in the UK and counts as the 4 years needed in Australia. I understand you are not doing a teaching degree you are doing an Early Childhood degree so you need to do the PGCE. If you do the EYTS you will still qualify for a Early Years teacher visa but you will be limited to working in Nurseries or day cares where the pay is not as good as if you are working in a school. As I will have covered the 0-2 age group through placements during my degree. Richard Gregan Posted February 2, 2018 Share Posted February 2, 2018 (edited) You need 4 years' university education, and the teaching qualification used needs to be relevant to the category being applied for, and needs to feature a minimum of 45 days' supervised teaching practice at a placement with children of the specified age range. 0-8 for Pre-primary, 5-12 for Primary, and 13-18 for secondary. A letter from the university needs to be provided which confirms your training specifically so that they can assess whether it meets these criteria. Primary School Teacher is very hard to get a visa for now. Victoria sponsors if the applicant has experience teaching in one of their designated languages. Considering no teachers have been called in the last few months, do I have any chance with 65 points? If not how about going for 190 for nsw, what is the criteria for getting an invite from them?
