i take these figures with a pinch of salt. be interested in some context and background figures, or a % of average wage etc.

Eg - monthly ticket for public transport, i'd argue that melbourne is the same physical size as greater london. A 30 day PTV pass is $147 whereas a zone 1-9 tfl ticket is over £300...

Why on earth is wine more expensive in Australia?

Australian agricultural producers do not receive subsidies - unlike those in Europe who receive billions (in euros or pounds).

Therefore they either cover the real cost of producing their crops - or they go broke/get out.

The Oz government also imposes an alcohol excise tax on wine.  Am not sure if there is an EU equivalent or how they compare.

also the big one in cost of living is the proportion of anything you spend as part of your salary.

a quick google suggests that average salary for manchester is £26k whereas average salary for melbourne is $80k (which converts to £47k) so does that also need to be taken into account???

Yes...cost of living comparisons are rather meaningless without comparing incomes.

Although the cost of house purchase is not factored in that particular survey. Looks more for shorter term perhaps ex pat business residents. I've noticed some rather cheap inner city offers for apartments in Manchester in fairly recent times. In the buy to rent mould.

One slightly interesting note on Melbourne, coming out of The Weekend Australian, this passed weekend. Bernard Salt has offered his thoughts on Melbourne, becoming a more people's city, with lower incomes, ever more  subsisting on cheaper living standards, as foreign students and near neighbour migrants on various visa's make do on what they have. Not sure if he considers it a good thing or not.
