Hi...I will be obtaining my Master's licence end of the year.I presently hold Chief Mate COC.Can I apply for skill assessment now with AMSA under Ship Master since i intend to go there for orals (AGW) after my Master's ticket.

This way i would just save some time starting the process sooner

I very much doubt it, a Masters CoR is assessed against a pre-existing Masters CoC. AMSA are quite rigid and operate in a very black and white manner, anything that does not fit into the prescribed requirements in the legislation is generally met with rejection.

Thank you Sir for your prompt reply

Sir the plan is to apply for my skill assessment at present and undergo mates oral in australia purely for PR purpose so that by the time Iam done with Master's i would have my Grant.

In this scenario i understand i would have to undergo only an oral again (since i would be australia with my PR) after obtaining master's licence in case i get an opportunity to work in australia ?(plz correct me if iam wrong)

You will probably have to pay for another assessment in addition to the Master CoR oral, essentially doubling the work. That being said, it is unlikely that you would need an AMSA CoR to find work when you get here. As a warning though, work is few and far between, recent adverts for pilotage jobs have had hundreds of experienced and qualified applicants, likewise most seagoing jobs are letting people go rather then recruiting.

Yes Sir i completely agree with you. The job scenario seems dismal and bleak however Iam working on board Specialised ROV DP vessels and knowing Australia to be the second biggest gas producer ,hoping for a promising future.

In the current market situation i guess ill have to continue working with my existing company till things get better

Iam sorting out my seatime letters,.will apply for my skill assessment next week.

Thank you for being so active on the forum. It's a blessing for people specially like myself who need clarification and the agents are almost useless

The above link is worth a read for anyone considering applying for skilled migration, the AMOU is working towards getting Masters & Mates removed from the skilled occupation list.

Dear cap R

I'm a certified 2 nd mate from india. I would like to give my chief mates at Australia.I'm having 30 months sea experience.I'm having the following doubts.

1.should I have an Australian cor prior giving an exam for mates from Australia.

2.should I have an Australian pr prior to proceeding for chief mate fg course

I was planning to study at Challenger institute for chief mate fg

They have asked me to get my sea time assesed from AMSA.

Please advise.

Requesting senior members who have obtained their grant or are near the completion of the process to kindly share details of a MARA registered agent in and around New Delhi. Looking for someone who is well versed with the requirements of our occupation.

Hello seniors

this thread was of great use to acquire critical information regarding skilled migration. However I have a slightly different query. Myself and my wife are planning to migrate under 189 skilled visa.I'm planning to stay as co-applicant as my wife will be the primary. In order to achieve extra 5 points I read that I have to get my skills assessed. My question

1. In this case too should I need to attend the orals or is there any formal assessment which could be done for me to stay as co applicant ? What does AMSA say when we initially submit our docs ?

Grade : chief mate FG, India

Thank you

It's primarily a pom (british) biased forum, so you might want to try asking around elsewhere for specific agents in New Delhi.

Yes to get the skills assessment, even as a co-applicant, you will need to to go through the same process including the Oral. Could you not get the points for your wife through other methods (English test etc?)

Good Day Sirs

My COC is expiring August 2016.Do i need to renew it prior applying for skill assessment or should I go ahead and apply for skill assessment and renew my COC prior appearing for Orals?

I can't answer that, it could make life a little more complicated for you, but unless you e-mail AMSA and ask, you won't know. Why not renew it early?

You will definitely need to contact the Challenger Institute (or Australian Maritime College in Tasmania) to find out about that, they will be able to talk you through entry requirements, the process and the student visas.

Only AMSA can answer that, but I very much doubt that you would have to do that. Drop AMSA an email to ask what to do next, although I'm surprised the college hasn't given you more information.
