Advice on getting work!

Hi we have had PR visas since January and my husband has been looking for work the last 2 months. He is on the SOL and applied for numerous jobs with no response?!!! We r hoping to go this summer as don't want the kids to have to restart school in September, but I'm starting to get worried that getting a job isn't as easy as I thought! Is it better to b there do you think? That wud mean us going without a job offer which is risqué with kids or do we just wait it out a bit longer! We have let r house out and living with my mum but getting stressed with the whole thing. Any advice wud b much appreciated!

Thanku xxx

I am a midwife and registered last yr in Perth. My husband is an engineer, telecommunications, or a network planner ( it's a niche market he tells me!) he wud earn more than me and the hope was I cud have a few months off to get the kids settled, so I don't really want to go just on my job alone but understand we might have to! Are up applying for midwifery jobs? As you're husbands job is a niche market, this might be a way Of ensuring you arrive with an income? Just a thought. I think midwives seem to be in quite high demand. Best of luck anyway. I have applied for an ITU post in canberra and am desperately hoping to hear something in the next couple of weeks as arriving with a job in hand will be a massive weight off! Fingers crossed.

Well yes of course it is better to be there. I am surprised you thought it would be so easy, unemployment is rising in Australia and being on the ground is essential for the majority of people. As you have already moved out of your home, perhaps he could go on ahead and try to find work?

I also agree with others, that if you want to get one income coming in quickly, you would stand a better chance of securing this and would suggest you start looking either now or as soon as you get there.

One thing to check....Are you using a .co.uk email address as we have sent a few emails too with no response.

One of my friends has been in oz now for 9 months and has just informed that I need to get a .com mail as people wont respond otherwise

Good luck!

People won't respond because you're not there - plenty of local on the ground applicants. I'm afraid lady of leisure or not that your job will probably be easier to get - I suspect an experience midwife would get snapped up, but nursing fraternity members could advise better. Worse comes to worse, you could always temp whilst hubby is job seeking....

The sol has very little to do with the actual availability of jobs. For example, my own occupation is on the csol but we have 40% unemployment.

It is very difficult to get a job prior to arriving though for most people as employers want to know you are in the country.

Hi Jilldesp

I wish you all the luck with the pair of you getting jobs.

We are based in the country, about one hour North of Brisbane CBD, close to Petrie, Samford and Strathpine. My OH is Aussie and arrived Aug 2014, having had a telephone interview and securing her job before she left. She is a senior vet and found her job through a specialist agency. I came out in October, once I'd sorted the house move and worked my notice. I took redundancy. I worked for a large multinational chemical business in the UK for 23 yrs in various roles. We moved for a lifestyle change. I'm struggling to find work since the move and some of the companies that would be a 'natural fit' for me are just too far away. This would mean a 90km+ trip each way and with the highways being so congested what is a 75 minute journey(each way) on Google maps is likely to be 105-120 minutes in reality! Also, a lot of the jobs are advertised through recruitment agencies, which means having to register with them, attend their offices to complete mountains of paperwork, watch safety videos, have an interview and complete other online assessments at home, etc. Personally, I have found that if I do get a response from an agency, it tends to be one's that have a Brit working there. They seem more helpful as they've 'been down that road'! Also a lot of jobs are contract to start off with, with the possibility of becoming permanent, but not all though. Be prepared for lots of driving about, train journeys etc to find what you want.

It is worth considering where you want to be based in relation to the areas that will be easiest to find work. With us being rural and myself not working, it can be hard at times. I miss social contact (have family and great number of friends back in Cheshire) as I don't even see our neighbours, but to move would also mean that my partner would also have to find another employer, and having only recently bought a house we'd lose money in the sale costs etc.

Like it has already been said on here, Aussie unemployment is on the rise. I can't say about other states but in Queensland, the last premier, Campbell Newman, slashed local government positions dramatically. Nationally, the mining boom has finished, Ford & Holden car manufacturing are finishing in 2017, Toyota is also rumoured to be reviewing its' Aussie operations. All this means there are more people looking for less positions!

My general feeling at the moment is that if you have kids it's a better place to bring them up than the UK. As my mate says, who has been in Perth for 12 years, 'Oz is not always better, just different'.

If I can provide you with any more pointers please message me.

It really isn't going to make any difference. An employer is soon going to work out where you are no matter what your email extension is. I always used co.uk before I moved and after I moved and it caused no issue ever.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I think it will b me going with the job offer! Just hope my husband gets work as well otherwise we will b returning! Not sure that we could sustain a decent lifestyle on one salary but hopefully things will work out for us x

It is a tough job market in Australia at the moment, it's good for you to prepare yourself for that before coming out.

However that does not mean you should hide away... you still have to go for it and enjoy your life.

I have had most luck using agencies for contracting work (engineering in Brisbane) it is worth ringing them and offering your CV. To be honest the way things are now they will only be interested in helping you if you actually in Australia. It is good that you have PR sorted already, and clearly both have skilled jobs... you will be fine.

For an advertised position I think it's usually best to ring the company if you can and talk before or just after applying. They might not like it or it might help them remember you. I have found a lot of companies don't even bother to reply so what have you got to lose.

The most sensible way to go about it might be for your husband to come out and try and find work and an area to live initially without the added pressure of the family...it took me a month to get my first job out here so I was starting to worry a bit about letting wife and kids down at the time. It is 50/50 on this though as how exciting to all come out and experience it together as a family. Hope it works out for you.

Maybe as others have suggested you apply for a job so that you have an income, then if hubby gets a job then drop down to part time or casual. I work as a midwife, we are a family of five and currently on a single income. If I was living in the UK there is no way we could live off my salary alone but it is manageable here in oz. I work full time 12 hour shifts so only work 3 days a week. After paying a mortgage and private school fees for 3 kids we don't seem to be saving much. However, if you work in the public system like I do there are opportunities to salary sacrifice, we also take advantage of the meals entertainment card, so are still able to eat out weekly.

Sydney is quite expensive especially for renting/buying. When I moved to Australia we were initially living in Sydney, we did move to the central coast as housing was more affordable. My aussie other half was still working then so he use to commute to Sydney. We now live in the Mid Northcoast, mainly for the lifestyle and housing affordability.

hi thanks for response. I have an interview nxt week for sf George's private hosp. I am suprised u living on a single salary?! Didn't think that was possible in Sydney. Do u mind me asking how much I pay for your rent each week? Are bills expensive? And how much do u pay for private schooling? I Didn't think that wud b an option! Also what r midwives paid? I have 19 years experience.

thanks a lot x
