moving to brisbane- advice please!

Hi! My husband has got a job as a GP in logan so moving from Cardiff, Wales. Waiting for visa at the moment. Hoping we'll get there mid/end of July. I've been researching for ages about where to possibly rent (short term when we get there then longer term). We've sold our house but don't want to buy straight away. So, basically any ideas about areas nice to the south part of brisbane would be much appreciated! Don't fancy Logan itself from what I've seen / heard. He wants a maximum of 30 mins commute if possible. We have a 2 1/2 yo boy and I'm looking to meet as many people as possible so don't fancy the sticks. Would love an area that's easy to meet people, reasonably big houses, where we can go shopping, nusery, walk to restaurants/bars. I play netball here (recreational- not hardcore) and would like to join a league of some sort there. So far I've been looking at cleveland area Redland bay (seems too far from the city), bulimba, hawthorne, carindale. Particularly like the houses around cleveland. Any thoughts about areas and short term accom? And when we move, how do you recommend we get going meeting people. Long question! Sorry!! ☺

Thanks shelly. Great advice. Is southbank any good for young professionals with a toddler? My brother used to live there in his 20s. Although I'm only 29 and my hubby early 30s, and we like socialising, we also need to think of the little one.

Just wanted to say hi as we will be rocking up in the Redlands area at the end of July. We are selling up (waiting on exchanging contracts right now) and will likely rent for 6 months with a view to buying in that time. We are watching realestate.com.au and inputting the area codes 4163, 4164, 4165 principally.

This includes Cleveland. We also looked at Wellington Point and Ormiston on our recce last year. We may even bump into you guys viewing properties I expect.

My simple advice, check out how busy the commute would be. The Pacific Highway can be very busy if driving, I would also suggest sticking to the south side of the city as the bridges can be pinch points during the day.

Best of luck.

Hey,

Originally from Pontypridd, pretty close to you guys.

We live in Wellington Point, love it. Cleveland and Redlands are nicer but the train line ends at Cleveland which is a reason that house prices are a little cheaper as you move towards Thornlands and Victoria Point. Nice route to take to Logan which avoids the motorway and is no more than 30 mins.

Bayside is a great place to be and suits us (32 and 36) - made great friends and have a full social calendar which is lovely. :)

Stay in touch!

Bayside is lovely but the commute would be a real pain. Carindale is very family friendly and a good compromise. You get quite a lot for your money too. I lived in Tarragindi and Greenslopes. - both nice areas with lots of young families and good schools. Keep south side as crossing the river is slow. Bulimia/New Farm great for young singles - lots of apartment living. Commute to Logan could be horrendous. Lots of rentals on the market in Brisbane at the moment - bit of an oversupply. Try not to have to drive too far. Brisbane traffic can be very heavy and journey times inconsistent.

I choose to live close to work and travel to places at the weekend which makes for an easier life.

Thank you all so much. Lots of good advice. It's hard to get a happy medium with house size and an area where there's things to do.

Gbye grey sky - fab timing. Maybe the same plane! Haha .Give me a private message and we can update eachother / give help to each other. Would be nice to hear from a newbie!

Vandeux- first time I've seen a fellow Welsh person on this forum! My cousins are from Ponty! What's wellington point like? Pretty/ much to do? Again, give us a private message if you want to. Would be nice to keep in touch (have someone to watch the ruggers with) haha.

Great to see some fellow Welshies on here. We're also in the Redlands (Capalaba) renting short term after arriving in Feb.

Totally agree with Redland Bay / Victoria Point for the commute to Logan. Straight out the back, avoid the highway and a lovely commute. Vicky Point / Thornlands booming with new builds at the moment, that's where we'll be looking at long term.

Carindale a good shout for a city commute, bus in as almost straight into the bus lanes (almost). I do the train from Thornside to City for work, can be a pain!

Hi Nish,

We moved from Cardiff in January this year. Me, husband and 2 kids 7 & 11. We live in Wishart which is nice and family friendly. Good schools, nice parks bikeways.

Carindale is real nice too, would quite like to live there but house prices higher.

I think all us Welshies should arrange a meet up. I haven't met many people yet so would be nice.

Anyway good luck with your plans

Sal

  • 2 weeks later...

On the southside Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood, Corinda and Oxley are all nice. Also all on a train line line straight into the city, 20 mins from Oxley where rentals are cheaper. Forget the car. hey you can take that from me even though I'm a Swansea Jack, I would never lead a Cardiff person astray! Ha ha!

So let's all arrange a get together. August? I've heard of the pig and whistle. Any good? Could arrange a meet up if anyone wants. X

Come to our wonderful BBC ! Brisbane British Club. We meet up every month at the Pig as well as other places. Lot's of great ex pats! Our next one is 26 July. Look it up on meet ups. Sounds like we could form a Brisbane Welsh Club. I would be interested but I'm going back to the UK in September for a few months.

I was about to suggest Oxley/Corinda/Sherwood/Graceville but Paul got in there first. When you get here just check out some of the parks in the area your son will love it! I used to do the commute from Corinda to Logan everyday was about 30 mins on the way in and 40 on the way back - seems pretty short compared to most commutes I have done over the years and now.

There are loads of nice restaurants and cafe's in the area and the train makes it easy to get into the city. We love the area our elder son is in a good school the younger one at a good kindy, and they both play for the one of the local Rugby teams.

Hi guys. Sorry about the late reply... took a last minute last girls holiday! Was lovely and good prep for the sun!!

So I've never heard of these areas before so will research. Thank you!!! Where are they roughly? Still waiting on our visa sadly but looks like we'll be coming late july. Nice to hear from so many of you Welsh... never knew there were so many welsh people too. Inbox me to let me know where your from and more about yourselves if you can/ want. Lovely to get to know you all as unlike a lot of the forums I've seen YOU'RE ALL LOVELY! x

Went to a new bar in Cleveland on the weekend. It is called Bench and is a craft ale bar with a capacity of 60! It is obviously pretty small but you can find them on facebook. At 9pm we started the singing and the whole place was singing along and taking turns to start the next song. Delilah made and appearance and for some random reason a few songs from the lion king . . . . . The atmosphere was unreal! The most 'welsh' thing ever. Bar staff filmed it all and the decibel reader was unimpressed!

Perhaps not so much the Pig n Whistle meet ups as they tend to be on Friday nights. Its a crowded pub and can be loud. If you look for other types the BBC organise, lunches etc these are more child friendly.

Do a quick search for Bench in Cleveland. You can ask on there. They monitor the page pretty frequently by the looks of it. :-)

Lots of babysitters around for bargain prices for the occasional night out as well. :-)

you our wont like is, we are well rough. :-p
