Canberra comes out on top because it's such a middle-class town - there's no industry to speak of, so most of the population is university lecturers and public servants, not factory workers or call centre operators etc. So people aren't getting paid more than average, they're just mostly in highly-skilled jobs. I have to say out of all the Australian cities, I really like Canberra. I think most people who run it down have never been there. It's got all the amenities of a big city, it's got very little riff-raff, it's got an excellent road network and practically no traffic problems (well they say they do but their peak hour traffic is like Sydney's Sunday arvo), four seasons - I could go on.
