freebo
We have a few days off in a couple of weeks and I was wondering about taking a trip to Darwin, NT would be the only mainland state we haven't been to but I'm wondering what we'd see & do up there (middle aged couple without kids in tow). I know it will be hot/humid but that doesn't bother us too much. We took a road trip to Longreach a few months back and it was a good journey but not much there when we arrived! Cheers! Pumpkin
We had a day and half there after we got off the Ghan three years ago. I am literally struggling to recall what we did in the city itself and so by that I am concluding that we didn't find a lot to do there other than wander around a bit. I daresay the more interesting things to do are a couple of hours away, but we did not bother hiring a car. Still, I am always curious about visiting new places and I definitely recommend a visit, but perhaps hire a car.

Hi Freebo I am a newcomer to Darwin, been here for a month. If you like nature and outdoors there are some fantastic outdoor spots to visit within a few hours from Darwin. You will need to hire a car, if you have 4wd even better. Litchfield, Kakadu parks to name just two are wonderful. There are some wonderful spots near Katherine too. Best to come before the wet season though. I am sure more seasoned travellers and locals will be able to give you more specifics. Pumpkin is right, there is nothing exceptional in the city centre...the beaches are lovely (but you cannot swim - crocs, jellyfish) to stroll, sit, watch sunsets. Hope you enjoy your break where ever you eventually decide to go. Edited September 20, 2014 by Austrial
starlight7
Definitely worth a visit, especially the night markets on the beach. You can't swim though because of the crocs but a day out to Litchfield-- magic
Alaska
Kakadu!
flag of convenience
Most the attractions are out of Darwin. Kakadu and Litchfield. Katherine Gorges. Saying that Mindall Beach markets, twice a week during the season is always full of life. Wonder if they still perform classical music beside the casino on a Sunday afternoon? If so great place for a picnic. Still the season for swimming. Fanny Bay museum worth a visit though small shows the bombing of Darwin duringWW2. Along with the 74 cyclone destruction of the town. Feed the fish at the landing by hand. Is the Roma Café still going? No idea but used to be the best for breakfast and coffee in town. If you've got long enough to do a day trip to Kakadu to see the wildlife, it's the perfect time of year now, because it's the end of the dry. Another good day trip is a riverboat ride to see the crocodiles is also well worthwhile - it's amazing to see them leap their own length out of the water! Darwin itself doesn't have any sights except for the lovely sunsets.
an1ta
Hi I was there 2 weeks ago for the weekend. I didn't find it at all interesting. its was great to have a look at the beach, but they where nothing special. I found it to hot and to dusty. I wouldn't go again. You might enjoy it though.
