I guess it is difficult to be subjective, like asking Spurs fans to name their favourite Arsenal team!? I loved Perth from the moment I arrived, did not like Adelaide, but that was more because I suddenly felt alone, after having lived for a month in a hostel in Perth and made a few friends. I remember checking into the YHA in Adelaide, into a dorm and seeing this guy covered in tattoos, so I immediately booked a private room. I even made the decision to go back to Perth (If only PB would do the same thing!?) and the guys in the hostel put a sign up on the notice board 'The Adelaide Kid is coming back.) But I'd met a couple of Scandanavian guys on the bus and again in Adelaide, and we arranged to meet up on the steps of the Opera House. (I thought, 'well, I'm probably going back to England, so I'd better see Sydney.)

In retrospect, assuming I could get a job wherever I wanted, Adelaide might be my preferred choice, if only because it is smaller than the other State capitals, apart from Hobart. I still have not been to Tassie, and perhaps i would have liked that even more.

I don't know you would find the 'best' place. Migration is so unsettling, once you have been through it in one place, who wants to do it all over again? Sydney is just 'home' to me now, despite the horrendous traffic. I would like to spend a month or so in each of the major (and even minor) cities. Maybe that is a project for me. And I'm sure I could settle anywhere, because, as the song (almost) goes, 'If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere! (Sydney is Australia's 'Big Apple! - Tough to Melbournians - you are just 'Chicago!')

Not a big city but The Sunshine Coast ticks your boxes, you can now cycle from the bottom to the top of the coast and although I haven't tried it there is mountain biking in the hinterland. Bags of tennis courts and clubs. Mooloolaba Esplanade is particularly nice :)

Ha Ha! all a bit subjective - personally think that Newcastle/Lake macquarrie has a lovely year round climate and great outdoors activity - as has Gold Coast hinterland if you like your walking.... I think you have to pretty brave to cycle in Australian cities unless you live near bikeways.....

Yes it may have a lovely year round climate, but it has not got the BEST, that, surely and without argument has to be Brisbane/SEQ.

Have to agree, outdoor lifestyle goes hand in hand with the weather, sure it gets a bit chilly in South East Queensland in the winter, but only for a few weeks in June and July and then starts to warm up in August.

Brisbane is nice, but can get a bit commercialised. I live in Toowoomba, about 90mins west of Brisbane, over 200 parks and ample opportunity to enjoy the outdoor lifestyle either on your doorstep or a short drive away. If you do fancy something a bit more lively, then Brisbane, Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast are an easy enough drive away, or better still a short flight from the wonderful Toowoomba airport.

I love it here, Toowoomba is quite possibly the most beautiful city in the world!

I've worked in Toowoomba and in my opinion it has nothing going for it. It's miles away from the Coast and a decent City. No idea what the youngsters get up to at night, apart from hooning up and down the one and only main street in the centre of town. There is a decent leisure centre with an outside 50m pool that's open in summer, so that's OK.

I've been over there weekends when it's not been worth coming back to Perth. I've refused to stay in Toowoomba though and always go to a Gold Coast hotel for the weekend. Also the price and quality of accommodation is astronomical. I can stay at the Crowne Plaza in surfers, in a great room for less than I can stay in the average Central Apartments in Toowoomba.

It also gets very cold in winter in land.

I suppose it's what you make it, Toowoomba has everything I need for me, my wife and daughter, I regularly visit Margaret Street and have not experienced any hooning around, but having said that, we are usually home for 9.30.

I see what you say about the motels and apartments, the prices are similar, but Toowoomba and Surfers are catering for completely different clientèle surely?

As for the weather, recently, its been warmer than Perth and about 5 degrees cooler than Brisbane.

How long ago did you work in Toowoomba?

I've been there several times over the last 10 years or so. Usually for maximum couple of weeks at a time. Had some tremendous storms last time we were there. Worked out at Oakey and drive out there from Toowoomba every day.

Had some nice meals in Toowoomba at the restaurant underneath the Central apartments, really good food in there. Bit pricey though, OK when work are paying. The Irish pub with the restaurant out the back is very good too and the seafood smorgasbord place. Apart from eating out, going for a run and using the leisure centre there doesn't seem a lot to do.

I'm sure if you have enough for your family and you like it that's all that matters mate. Wouldn't do for us to all like the same thing.

If you can measure the most idylic place to live in for Poms, purely by the number of Poms living there, well, Sydney has the most, with Perth a close second, and as Perth has less than half the population of Sydney, then it must be Perth! (snooks to that minority - large though it may be, but still a minority who hate Perth!)
