I have been offered a permanent Electronic engineering job with a government organisation, and my wife is a Doctor in the process of sorting out a 1 year medical post. Will hopefully both be working in the Clayton area of Melbourne. 2 pre school age kids so a big nursery bill is in the pipeline! Anyone on here live in or around Clayton? olly Posted June 27, 2014 Share Posted June 27, 2014 You are right about Clayton, it is not the best suburb, there are is a lot of industry out there, headquarters of big companies etc and also the second biggest ( I think) University in Victoria. There are some okay parts and not so fantastic parts - however, it is very accessible to other parts of Eastern and South Eastern Melbourne due to its proximity to major Roads and Freeways/Tollways (although these can be busy !). Some nice suburbs (and can be expensive to buy though) not far from Clayton include Glen Waverley, Mount Waverley, Oakleigh, Mulgrave, Burwood, Blackburn, Nth Blackburn. People I know commute from the outer South East to Clayton on the Monash Freeway (from Berwick, Pakenham etc). Good luck with it. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mordialloc looks like it could be nice, or somewhere along that coastline. Going from experience I would try and be near a Surf Club for the kids. I know they are young yet but our eldest was only 2 when we came. He saw the kids on Sunday mornings on the beach and wanted to be part of it from the first day he saw them. Joined at 7 years old for both of them and it's been one of the best things we ever did. We live in walking distance of the beach so before they didn't need a car to get there, there were always friends there, especially in summer and there boards and equipment stored there. Our eldest is 24 now and some of his best friends are people he met at surf club. He's not competed or gone down on Sunday mornings for years but you can never take away the skills the kids learn and it's great to feel comfortable that you know your kids are capable in the ocean. The youngest started when he was 7 too. He has autism though so it was always going to be touch and go whether he would compete, or be good enough to. He's 19 though now and helps out with a younger age group as their board coach. Me and the wife took to it like fishes to water and it's kept us all fit. Although the Mornington Peninsula are my favourite beaches, but of course you have the commute which doesn't suit some people. It all depends on how close you want to be to work once again. Other areas further out are more affordable but more expensive. Look towards Packenham etc for commuting by train. The bayside area is very desirable but expensive. Amazing what you can do with google maps. I've been to Melbourne but never to that part of it. I've been on work trips a couple of times and then once with my wife and youngster. Stayed in the City and had a trip out to St Kilda, went for a meal on Lygon street, touristy sort of things. When you are looking at somewhere to live it's a totally different concept. I know what kind of lifestyle I like now I've been in Perth for 22 years and you know instinctively now which suburbs would give it to you. We live in Mordialloc / Parkdale - about 15 mins away, and it's a world away. We go to Clayton for cheap ethnic shopping! I presume your wife will be looking to work at Monash hospital? My next door neighbour is a research scientist as CSIRO in Clayton - that may be where you are employed? excitedbutterrified Posted July 2, 2014 Author Share Posted July 2, 2014 Thanks, I currently work at a very similar organisation in the UK, and the work is very specialist, in fact I think I have specialised myself out of most of the electronic engineering jobs that exist! I've been watching the oz synchrotron jobs webpage for about 6 years, and to be honest when this role was advertised, I wasnt going to apply as it has come about a year too early (due to daughters age and wife is preggers , wife's career isnt at the ideal point) but it was too good an opportunity to miss, so we are going to do everything we can to make it happen.
