Interesting read TPQ. Read a bit more of it and they pick a very limited cross section of people to survey.

For example the sample they picked to ask about Aus was

Sample size: 408

Country of origin: 44% UK

13% New Zealand

Occupation: 12% Banking,

11% Health,

10% IT

Age: 18-34 = 20%

35-54 = 48%

55+ = 32%

Gender: Male = 54%

Female = 46%

So banking health and IT professionals were the only ones they bothered with??

China??? Wouldn't live there for quids. Overcrowded, polluted- they must have been hacked into!

I know of an Australian couple that went over to teach there back in 2005. It was supposed to be for a year but they remain, call it home and will stay they claim, unless kicked out. It seems a pretty nice place they call home, down close to the Laos border.

Haven't been to that bit so maybe it isn't like the big cities. Beijing is awful and Shanghai not too good. Guilin is very beautiful but overrun with tourists. The part where the pandas live not too good, either- but I could imagine down round Laos might be more peaceful and rural.

My brother went 10 years ago and did TEFL. My parents had to lend him £3000 as a 25% deposit on an apartment and he was earning about £4500 a year....we thought he was going to be left so far behind he'd never be able to afford to move back to the UK.

The flat is now worth £250K, he has two of them, he has a 50% share in a posh bar, his wage has risen past western levels and he's married to a Chinese with a kid. In short, he's caught us all up and overtaken us....and now he probably won't even want to return to England. Guangzhou...17 million people and he loves it.

Same with Hong Kong, I like it to visit but I just couldn't live there, way to crowded and they have no idea how to queue, it's every man for himself

My brother and his family live there and it would take something quite major to make them move back to UK. They have been there for 3-4 years, live on the outskirts so have the freedom of surrounding countryside but very easy access to HK island.

Just goes to show you. I've known a couple of others that went there to teach but couldn't hack it. The freezing winters for one thing.

He went there for a lifestyle choice, had a degree in the UK which got him nowhere except answering calls for a credit card firm.

Guangzhou's southern China, a couple of hours north of HK. Cool short winters, but not like the UK and no snow. It's like India, a world inside itself.

My same brother worked and lived in India too, an amazing country with such a diverse culture and wonderful people. He spent 3 years there and loved every minute even the near 50deg heat through to 6ft flood waters. We have been 3 times and would love to go back again.
