pablo
I think you'd find that pubs have changed in the UK since the 80's and 90's. But we can do without pubs well. Loads of "trendy" bars springing up,i agree on that, still loads of "proper" pubs left tho to be fair I love all this daftness meself tbh,to others its a nightmare, each to their own,but i love a walk about in town of a Saturday,i'm still hoping to get to Aus,but for all the things i like about it,it wont ever be the same (to me)as my city as regards having the craic, hopefully other things will more than make up for that tho Coopers,Clayton Sq,one of our female PIO members knows it well too,"proper" pub,i love this clip tbh,its what a day out should be

It's called people having a good time. Shame pubs aren't like that here, the $10-16 dollar pints put people off spending a few hours in them like back home. Plus I found if you have about 5 pints the bar people won't serve you any more and ask you to leave. It's happend to me a few times and other lads at work have said the same, you get a tap on the shoulder and asked to leave. Wouldn't mind if we've been pissed up but we weren't

Quoll
I guess you were ill? I was, very "ill" in Canberra! Fat and unfit, found it very uncomfortable in the heat so catch 22 didn't get the exercise I wanted/needed and just sat inside with the curtains drawn in the summer keeping the heat out so got heavier and less inclined to walk. I now walk 5-10 miles most days whereas I was pushing it to walk around the block in Canberra - and who bothers to walk round the block there when you can drive LOL. I used to find that I really struggled with stairs after Canberra - I just didn't meet any in my daily grind, it was all escalators and lifts - so every trip back I would hone my stair climbing strength until the next visit. As for missing the sunshine - nope, don't miss Aussie sunshine at all. After the 7 yr drought with barely a cloud in the harsh blue sky I would yearn for a cloud, for some rainfall and would pore over the BoM site to see if we were going to get a cloud burst. I like variety - there are many more varied days here than people recall - most mornings are glorious and we've had some fabulous days - sunny but not the eyeball searing frizzle your flesh kind of days, days where you can go out and walk and enjoy! My mum is one of the "weather's always miserable" brigade, she genuinely only remembers the grey days! Even if you point to the most glorious sunny morning she'll be "it won't last" - think it must be inbred!
Maggie2012
aww, sorry to hear that iACT affected you the negative way. It takes some time (usually years) to get used to a climate. Could have been that it was the lack of friends rather?

Your not going to the right places. The ACT has the highest female to male ratio in the country (all the NSW country girls here for employment). Most people manage to walk and keep fit quite well in those temperatures. They certainly don't need to stay indoors all year to avoid the heat.

Could have been that it was the lack of friends rather? Huh? I lived there for 32 years!!!!!! The climate got worse for me the older I got! I had "friends" - lots of acquaintances, rather, and very few stood the test of time beyond the situation that spawned them. I'm a reasonably friendly person and in a people industry but true friends just never happened. My "best" relationships were mainly with people who happened to be in the same situation as myself - long (even longer than me) term expats, all bar one of whom would dearly have loved to do what I am now doing and living back in UK - they're all past the point of no return like I thought I once was. I'm actually one of the longer term Canberra residents LOL - it's a very itinerant place! One of my sons has moved to UK and has no intention of returning. The other is partnered with a girl whose mum lives in ACT but they live in Vic at the moment. I think he'd happily not live in ACT again and doesn't have any long term friendships either. He's a bit like me with respect to the climate and my daughter in law is paranoid about letting the grand kids out in the summer sun! Paradise it ain't! But even so, I know I will have to live in Aus again and I'd choose Canberra ahead of anywhere else. I hope I can work out ways that I don't go back to the same old me!
