Hi everyone

I moved from the UK to the out skirts of Sydney 4 weeks ago on a 457 visa with my partner (his visa). Back in the uk i had an NVQ2 in childcvare and development and was studying for a Diploma in specialist teaching assistant - I have contacted many organisations to find out;

how to get a job as a teaching asssitant

Ive been to schools with cv referances and certificates and said ill start with anything - but as i havent worked in an oz school they wont help

Ive tried contacting agencies to find out what my qualifications are worth and i got put on a wild goose chase through company after company with still no luck.

At home while i was studying for my diploma I worked as a nanny monday to thursday and volunterred at a school on fridays. Ive tried applying for many nanny positions also and they all reply saying my resume looks great etc whats my visa status and as soon as i tell them they say they cant employ me?!

Am i just having bad luck or is there a reason they say this??

any ideas on what i can do/ contact now??

Thank you

Oh dear, it can be so hard when you do not know where to look, it sounds like you are banging your head against a brick wall!

I am surprised at the agencies you would think they would know more?

Maybe try ringing schools and ask questions until you find that helpful person who can give you the right information.

You can get your childcare qualification assessed to see where it fits in the new National Quality Framework, through acecqa http://acecqa.gov.au/qualifications/assessment-of-equivalent-early-childhood-educator-qualificat/

Do you know what your work rights are on your visa? If I was you I would have information ready for them when they say you are not eligible to work, give them a link to the info on the web or put together information you can send them by e mail or fax, a lot of Aussie employers probably do not have a clue about visas.

Have you seen this? http://www.waata.asn.au/committee.html

Hang on in there I am sure you find out what you need soon.

Good luck

Karen

I dont know about qualifications sorry, with the nanny jobs, maybe people are being put off because you just have a temporary visa and they dont want their children getting used to a nanny that may have to leave after a short while. Maybe you would have better luck applying to daycare centres

thanks guys u r all so lovely to try and help.

I would have agreed about the temporary visa is my visa wasnt for four years. most ppl who have nannies there children are younger and after four years they start school and they want there nannies to cut down there hours.....oh i dunno.

Kazze thank you i phoned acecqa and they said first of all i have to ring ......gave me anumber.....they said no you need to ring.......so it went on.

Im just very confused and getting nowhere

Yes I can work on my visa and have it already in paper and on computar incase anyone asks.

Nanny agencies wont employ me untill I have had my qualifications checked ect.

Ill keep at it though -im not going to give up without a fight!

Another quick question - have any of you got a police check or a working with children check? I phoned to get a working with children check and they said they only give them when you are employed by someone and they request it and i said what about a normal police check and they said you have only been in the counrty for five weeks so they wont give you one you will have to get one from the UK??? I have old CBR checks from the uk..... has anyone had this???

Had a quick scan of your original message. As long as your visa gives you work rights then there's no need to say you're only in the country for such and such a time. Doing private au pair/nanny/helper work is probably the best route as then you will network with the schools that the children in your care go to.

Also you need to push the agencies to get you work. I phoned everyday until I got something e.g. Early Learning Placements. As others may have said just going to the schools and Long Day Care Centres with your resume/cv is really great - offer to work a day or two for nothing. Where I worked a lot of staff started off as casuals just by handing in their cv. I know that works as my good friend did it. She left a job and got a job the following week, (mind you she's a great childcare enthusiast).

There is no CRB check or Police check done. But bring your CRB with you as it goes towards your checks with the employer. You must complete a Working with Children check for every childcare/vulnerable person job you do.

In NSW study for the Children's Diploma is free at TAFE if you have PR or temp PR . If you can afford to get some of your NVQ2 recognised then this could be a help BUT its expensive. If you join Universal Childcare they will help place you and continue to help with your studies.

I'm unsure as to roles as a specific TA or LSA in Australia - but if you find out let others know. That's a role I really enjoyed.

I am sorry message is rushed..feel free to PM me

is it because on a 457 they would have to sponsor you? I know the first job I applied for I was told that I could not apply on a 457 as part of the job would be studying a further qualification which the course is only open to permenant residents. I cant help sorry about your qualifications/job etc as I am a nurse ( also going to sydney very soon) but i would try asking a school / agency about what minimal qualifications they would expect from someone applying for a job and then maybe you will be able to get some advice about how their ideas of qualifications match the ones you have? Sorry I am probably not very useful but I hope you sort it quickly x
