  1. If you were going to spend 3 months in SW WA, which 3 months would you spend? I'm toying with Oct,Nov,Dec, or Jan,Feb,mar? I know winter is quiet special down there, but I'd prefer the summer months.
  2. Life would be simpler if the UK and Australian tax years were in sync. Although it has worked to my advantage before, I can imagine it could easily work against you.

Are you leaving Australia? Or the UK?
  4. I think it's unusual for an incoming government not to uphold laws which have been declared by the preceding government. Certainly not unless they actively campaigned against them.
  5. Incidentally, footpathmap.co.uk worked really well in WA. Best walking app I've found. Unfortunately, it doesn't tell you where knee deep mud is. But that's rarely a problem in WA. Unlike the swamp that the UK currently is.
  6. I've never had a problem with the double taxation agreement before. Maybe if you have really complicated stuff it might be difficult, but it always seemed really simple to me.
  7. I thought she had changed that? But I'd be surprised if they pay any inheritance tax. They would trust it surely? I thought pensions sat outside of inheritance tax, as does life insurance payments. Does super fit this description? I also thought gilts weren't covered if owned by non residents. I've always thought it a very unfair tax on the working class who have done well.
  8. Been coming to Australia every year for 4-6 weeks. Initially we'll extend that to 8-12 weeks. Eventually we'll need a longer term solution. I'll be asset rich income poor so maintaining two houses isn't a drama although it won't be necessary initially, and tax won't be a problem. I'm a cheap date, so the money side is fine. We will have our kids living in the UK property as adults initially. This isn't going to be a massive change. It'll be a low risk thing we evolve into. This isn't my thread, so I think people should stop hijacking it worrying about me when you really don't need to. I know what I'm doing.
  9. That's easy. The UK in summer is the best place in the world. But I'd rather not spend another shitty wet winter in the UK. Whilst my parents are alive we could do four months in Australia with no structural changes. After they pass we will find a more permanent solution. Everyone seems to go looking for problems sometimes, when there really are no huge obstacles.
  10. As I'll be retired this won't be a huge problem.
  11. Actually I'm quite partial to Irish whiskey. I also tried monkeys shoulder quite recently and really enjoyed that. I'm not really into that peaty stuff.
  12. It will help having family in both countries, but we haven't sorted out the fine details yet. Probably a small property in each country. Preferably something we can lock up and leave. Would probably decide to be resident in Australia, and would do tax return there.
  13. Keep the leprechauns away, but that's Ireland isn't it?
  14. Fly nets. Just like they wear in Scotland.
  15. They did have a bad fly year this year and the end of last. Made the papers. Something about it not raining early enough for the dung beetles.
  16. It is paradise down there. Obviously the coast is an attraction, but you don't have to go coastal. Donnybrook is a nice little town. Good community feel. Bridgetown also. Plus you can go further south. Big thing is hospitals, especially as you get older. Busselton does have a hospital, but they often defer to Bunbury. You might just scrape a small three bed in Busselton at that price. You can go below MR. But then you have hospitals and transport. You can get a coach from Busselton to Perth, but I don't think the train goes past Bunbury. Busselton is actually pretty flat. Annoyingly flat actually. Lifestyle is second to none. Everything you want for the older person. Lots of arty stuff down there too. Bit cooler than Perth. Can get cold in winter, especially if you go inland. Still doesn't rain much in summer. It does get very busy over the Xmas holidays. Tourists can be annoying. If all goes well I'll be spending half my retirement there and half in the UK.
  17. Do you have any ideas of where you would like to live in Perth? It's a small city, (Manchester sized?) but it's a big city in area and it takes a long time to get from some places to others if you aren't taking the train or the freeways and highways. Will you even be in Perth? There are country regions, and the south west is growing rapidly. What do you and your partner do?
  18. Family member is a settlement agent, so that's all taken care of. But I guess it's probably not that simple for most people. Family member also drew up the contract. They're not that complicated in most cases.
  19. Don't they check your boarding pass for purchases in transit? I thought it was because they think you might be thirsty and want a drink in transit. In Doha, they have drinking fountains. Do they have them in Dubai?
  20. Term usually starts very early Feb. They have sixish weeks Xmas holidays.
  21. Property in Perth in particular is very hard to come by. By way of example, a family member recently sold a house south of Perth for $50k over asking price, cash offer, within an hour of him suggesting on Facebook that he might be looking to list the property. No need to bother an estate agent. Sold. Rentals are equally hard to get. AirB&B a bit easier, but they're not cheap. I'm not living there ATM, so it may have eased a bit, but I'd be surprised.
  22. Pretty sure she doesn't start until 2026, so you'll have some time.
  23. Although I do see they are for different things so I do take that back, I had assumed they were all the same in different groups.
  24. Also, you probably don't need to do multiple threads, as I assume most people just look at latest threads.
