As title suggests - have the opportunity to live and work in both places. Which is better? Anyone with any local knowledge?

Hello! Me again As the title says really! At what point in your teacher accreditation journey did you have to verify your identity in person at a ‘service centre’ (whatever they are!)? As in - when obtaining your WWCC, your NESA teacher accreditation, or your Approval to Teach? I’ve wrote this on my notes but can’t find the info online. I know all docs have to be certified copies, but at what point did you need to physically have your ID checked in person? As always, thank you!

Could do with advice re places to avoid though, if you know the state? Next on my ‘to do’ list! Knowing my luck, I’ll land us in the most deprived, economically-challenged, crime-ridden area in the whole of Aus!!

Hi Ben, I’ve pestered you on another thread about this - sorry! I really need to be able to work as soon as we land too. We have 3 children also and no friends/family over there. Were you able to go to the Embassy because of the state? We’re heading to NSW (sponsored on a 190). Do you know where I’d find out more info about this? You’re the only person I’ve come across to mention this! Have considered going to Aus on my own to try and do as much of the registration as possible, but it would cost me about £4k just to do this, so if I could do the equivalent round the corner, that would be magic!

Hello, I’m after the equivalent to the UK’s National Curriculum Programme of Study for English, for secondary school only (our KS3 and 4, or years 7-11). Does anyone have a link so I can make sure I’m looking at the right thing? I’ve googled but keep getting info for K-2; not sure what that even means? Is it Kindergarten to Y2 or something? As you can tell, I’m clueless right now so really need to be familiarising myself with what is covered in English in secondary schools in New South Wales. Any links to the above and useful websites much appreciated! Xx Edited to add: what about exam boards? Is there a most popular one used? Again, for English and looking at the state of NSW only.

Morning all. So I’ve just posted on the teaching thread but hoped I might get more of a response if I start a new thread. We were granted our 190 NSW Sponsored visas on 4.11.22. We’ve sold our house now (no chain!) so can be heading out sooner rather than later (just waiting on the dogs’ health certificates to come back ). With three kids, ideally I’d have a job to go straight into. This would also help with location - we don’t know anyone over there and haven’t ever visited (), so can live/work anywhere in NSW. A job ahead of leaving would give us a good idea of where to start looking for an Airbnb and then, later, a rental until we know where we’d like to live long term. Anyway, I think I’m getting a little confused with all the different processes that need to be completed before you can teach in NSW, and would really appreciate someone in the know checking over if I’ve got the following correct, and answering some of my questions. klr81, thank you for replying! At what point did you manage to secure a job? Did you go over without and then applied for WWCC and then AtT once you landed? What address did you use for your WWCC? How did you apply - logistically - for the job without the other ‘compulsory’ bits needed on the application? I hope that makes sense!

Hi Benj1980, Can you explain how you did this from the UK and without going out to Aus first to get the WWCC and Approval to Teach? I’d love to do the latter but it’s a very long way and lots of extra £s if I can do in London which is around the corner from me! Many thanks in advance x

Hello again, Can someone please confirm what this means please? Still trying to see if I can get around the whole needing to live/have an Australian address before I can apply for the Working With Children Check/WWCC and then Approval to Teach, before I can apply for jobs in NSW! I read this as, yes, you can apply for temp positions as long as you have had your visa granted? (Which we have now. And we’ve sold our house. Would be the icing on the cake to get something lined up before we fly out!). I am an international student. Can international students apply for approval to teach? Yes, you can apply for casual and temporary teaching approval provided you hold a valid visa for employment in Australia. You will not be eligible for full approval to teach or permanent employment if you do not hold Australian citizenship or permanent residency.

Hello everyone! Our skilled 190 sponsored visas were granted 4.11.22. Our state is NSW. I understand that I can’t begin to apply for teaching positions until I have Approval to Teach and a Working With Children Check/WWCC, which I can’t do from the UK as we need an Australian address and to be able to verify identity at a service centre. My question therefore is: did anyone go over alone (as in, within family who have also been granted visas) simply to start the process of getting AtT and the WWCC? If so, are you able to use an Airbnb address or would I have to secure a rental first? I’ve read that it takes approximately 8 weeks - would I need to stay until the paperwork came through? Like the majority of people looking at NSW, it is a little daunting not being able to secure even some relief work before arriving and I hoped to be working sooner than the 8 weeks on average it takes just to get registered. I follow a family on YouTube and the main applicant used their hotel address and managed to secure a term’s worth of work within just a few days of landing. Any advice much appreciated xx

This is not what I’m saying at all. Because my 190 state sponsored visa is close to being granted (fingers crossed), and with that application comes the positive Skills Assessment, proof of qualifications and work history, tonnes of letters proving my past employment with children, Police Check, Health Clearance, etc, etc, you’d think there would be a way to apply for jobs only in the state that has offered sponsorship and has thus requested all these docs already without having to apply for another check of some kind (i.e., part of the AtT is the WWCC which involves a Police Check which I’ve already done…). I’m talking about applying for jobs in a state that has said they want me to go to work in! Jeez. I’m not asking to go and ‘work there legally without holding a visa with work rights’. I’m not a visa expert and know I haven’t explained all this correctly, but I think you knew full well what I was asking. I don’t think your reply is necessary, kind or helpful. And here was me thinking this forum was a friendly place to seek advice. Boy was I wrong. I won’t be doing it again, nor will I be responding to your inevitable condescending reply.

Ahh, OK, thank you. Seems bonkers to me when that state is sponsoring me to work there and they have the job vacancies, especially considering all the other hoops you jump through to get to this final stage of waiting, but, hey, what’s a bit more waiting gonna hurt?!?

Hello! We submitted our application on 15th April and all 5 of us have had full health clearance now (husband has a wonky head so this was an issue!). NSW is the state. I’m wanting to start applying for teaching positions now, ideally. Is this possible? From what I’ve read, in order to apply for anything in NSW, I need Approval to Teach, which involves a Working With Children Check/WWCC, amongst other scary sounding tests and assessments, etc. But in order to get this Approval to Teach, I need to already be living in Oz/have PR/an address/a working visa. Can anyone shed any light on this, pretty please? The good old ‘tinternet is sending me in circles. Find it hard to believe that this isn’t something that I can be sorting now while we are waiting for our visas, which seem to be pretty much guaranteed at this stage? According to this article, Secondary School Teachers are ranked #2 on the critical workers list. Does anyone know if this is accurate/a true reflection of the current situation? I’m a Secondary English Teacher…

Thank you Southlander. If you applied for teaching too, how come you’ve been waiting so long if teaching is on the critical skills list? Did you go for state sponsorship? If so, what state? (If you don’t mind me asking, of course! Just trying to get my head round it all). Also, can I just check something on the visa application fees front? For the 190, I have it as: $4,045 for the main applicant, $2,020 for a partner (and any child over 18) and $1,015 for each child under 18 years of age. We have 3 children under the age of 18 (now - the eldest is 16). I get this to 9110 aus $ = £4963. Is this right? Is this what we’ll need to pay if they decide to go ahead and sponsor me? And what happens if they later retract the offer since it’s not guaranteed until you have the visa in your hands? Do they refund you?

Sorry to keep posting and sounding dumb, but…at what point is it classed as being ‘submitted’? Just so I know at what point to start my official waiting from So, I’ve replied to their email invitation to apply for sponsorship by NSW. I uploaded some docs at this point - evidence of the points docs I think. But no medical? It said 6 weeks to find out NSW’s decision. Where am I in the ‘two year wait’?!?

I’ve no idea My other question, reading these replies (other than why, when NSW and I’m presuming other states in Aus are reporting thousands of teacher shortages, such the long ass wait) is at what point do you know you’ve been successful? At what point can you stop worrying that you’ll never get a visa? I don’t actually mind waiting; what kills me is the not knowing…

Ausvisitor - again, thank you very much for your replies; I really appreciate it. On the job front - if NSW do offer sponsorship, at what point do I start looking for a position? My husband is really worried about his medical. He runs 5k a day and is in the best shape but has been on Propranolol since his dad died (slowly coming off them now), and they recently found what (thankfully) turned out to be a benign tumour at the base of his skull. Could his medical affect any offer made? Can we be getting this sorted while we wait to stop him fretting about it?

Morning all, Hope everyone is safe and well this morning. As per my title, I received an invitation to apply for NSW nomination (subclass 190 visa) as a Secondary School Teacher two weeks ago. I applied straight away and so am now waiting, again, to get to the next step in the process. Problem is, I’m not actually sure of the process : 1. What does the invitation to apply actually mean? 2. Could we (husband and 3 dependents included in application) be turned down at this stage? What’s the likelihood of obtaining the visa after receiving an invitation to apply for state nomination? 3. Can anyone help re general bullet-points of the process from this stage onwards? As in, when do I start looking for a job? Does it have to be in NSW? 4. Can I be getting anything else sorted while we wait? Medicals? Police checks? I’ve just signed up for an Immi account as thought I needed to in order to complete the medical checks but my application isn’t on there - I applied via the Expression of Interest/Skills Select route? I’ve googled lots but the information is either too vague or non-existent. Actually embarrassed to admit I’m this clueless on what is such a huge issue in our house, and husband is leaving it all to me because I’m the main applicant Needless to say, any help will be MUCH appreciated!
