  1. Hi i am a sparky aswell, if he cant get the training done at tafe try QET Queensland electrical training the guys name is chris williamson, basically you complete some books / etc and take a 2 day exam, the good thing is that he used to work for the licencing board so he submits your application and you have your licence within 2 weeks. But again he will still need to keep a diary of work he has done for 6 months, the hard part is getting a company to give you a chance.
  2. Been a while since I've been on here as moved out of our rental into our own place but thing are looking a lot better now. Work wise I have now been take on full time and kept on the same rate that I was on as a casual.
  3. I am still working on my training permit at the moment working with another sparky so am supervised, he's off on hols for a couple of weeks and i have a feeling the company i work for won't give me any work as they believe i have to have someone with me, although other people on the firm don't have licence's and it's OK for them to work alone ( we won't go there ). I have been onto the codes of practice / rang Queensland licensing and know one can give me an answer as to what is supervised. I would assume that having a mobile phone should you need advice on something should be acceptable as you don't have someone watching you all day long connecting sockets etc, any idea where i can find out so i can give my company something to reference, any info would be appreciated.
  4. I have (supervised licence / training permitt as well for my 176 visa ) may i ask what you are asking, as if you have a supervised licence you must have been issued a visa of some kind or was the OH the main applicant.
  5. I spend 18 years in the food game as well but over here doing domestic work as i have mentioned in other posts you need a licence for every thing and i also sent lots of cv's out not one reply but the first job a rang i got it although it's not best job i'm only doing it to get enough hours to have my log book signed off then i will be moving on
  6. That's the hard part getting someone to give you a chance, i'm on the gc and most of the work seems up to Brissy, just remember you will also need to under go through gap training which will set you back between $3500-4000 and you also need to keep a log book, my training person has said at least a thousand hours and must be signed on every page ( i use a diary ) buy a qualified electrician.
  7. Yeah revision is the key, but as per the post i have put on here you then need to get a permit to work from qld licensing to be able to work, then you need to to gap training with a registered training organisation ie tafe and keep a log book of work a minimum of 1000 hours some say a year before you can apply for a licence so not easy.
  8. I have now been here for 4 months ans started work back in January and i'd have to say it's not good, the hardest part about being a sparky is the first question you get asked is do you have a licence not yet and there not interested, i was lucky enough to get a job but it's very hit and miss, in the 3 months iv'e only had 2 full weeks work some weeks 2 days this week 3 days. As i'm sure any spark's out there know you have to do some re-training either at tafe or a registered training organisation which is the route i am going down as you can do all the course work at home at your own pace, not hard just getting back into the calculations etc, managed to borrow a copy of the regs from one of the spark's and found a download of as 3008 so all good there. Also you have to keep a record of the work you have done and i have heard that somewhere it has to be a year, but the training i'm doing they have told me about a 1000 hours and then should be good to take a practical and theory exam, and good to get my licence by about June, the good thing with the course i am doing is that the guy who runs it used to work for the licensing board so getting the licence should be a formality. Pay not particularly good and this week have had my rate cut by $2.00 an hour they didn't even tell me so be interesting to see what they say when i ring up, trouble is can't rock the boat too much because i need to stay long enough to get my log book all signed off for work i have done. So all in all not easy but will carry on and then to look to get into the commercial sector where the pay is a lot better.
