  1. As a dental hygienist/therapist now living in oz I'd say the standard of dentistry is generally higher here than the uk. Yes it is expensive but at least if something goes wrong with any of the treatment you are able to go back & get it corrected. However if you go abroad who will then maintain that work plus if there's a problem you're a long way away to get it sorted out. Bear in mind if you have say implants carried out abroad will the components be compatible with what is generally used in Australia?
  2. Your lucky I'm uk trained dental hygienist/therapist & registered with GDC & I've been informed that I'll have to sit a written exam & then if im successful at that I'll be allowed to sit a 5 day practical assessment! Ive not worked in 18mths! Need to start revising but feel dissallusioned at the thoughts of doing it all again. Think I might retrain as a plumber or carpenter lol!! Good luck & yes definitely get an agent it'll save you in the long runFixed quote
  3. We shipped all my partner's tools but we put a starter kit in his suitcase. We declared them & where waived through customs. No problem with the container but I'd meticulously cleaned them with jeyes fluid. They had opened every tool box & inspected them so I was glad we went to the effort
  4. So my tenants have been living in my house for 18mths & we have decided to sell the house. We have marketed it below the valuation ideally so the house could be purchased for a buy to let & the tenants could stay. However the pictures taken by the estate agent look like a student squat. The feedback from viewings is that there is rubbish in the utility room thst smells, non off the toilets had been flushed & there was a strong smell of cat wee! When I contact the letting agent she told me that she wasn't aware of any problems with the property & if there was it was likely to be wear & tear. I even offered to pay for a cleaner to go round but then she said the tenants now want to leave!! I feel stressed with the whole situation & powerless to do anything! ! Rant over thank you!!
  5. We are freaked out after finding a centipede the size of a dog in the bedroom! It took 2 stamps from my partners work boots to kill the buggar that moved faster than a formula 1 driver as it retreated into the ensuite & thankfully died!!! We are now moving the covers of the bed back & checking the entire bedroom before we can sleep! They can't kill us but hell they are scary looking !!
  6. I work on my reatives all year by telling them that the chocolate here is awful & my "red cross parcel" of chocolate goodies arrive in the post! I currently enjoying a satifying munch on a crunchie & snickers!!! Best Chrissy pressie ever!!
  7. Lol !! My OH suggested you could always borrow a child! - I bet there's plenty of parents wanting to get shut of one after a long haul flight! He always says the overhead luggage compartment is a good place to keep kids on a flight! He doesn't have children...thankfully!
  8. We brought a years worth of toiletries with us in the container (well they lasted a year!) we had no problems. We cleaned all my partners tools which took the large proportion of the shipping container & every toolbox was opened. We didnt have any problems at all but i invested a great deal of time in cleaning everything. We had one or two new items but we did not declare them on the form as they where taken out of their origianl packaging & packed with other tools in the container.
  9. Thank you all so much for all the suggestions & advice! My plan now is to lock myself in a cupboard with a large supply of diazapam & wine lol! Xx
  10. Parents in law been here 6 1/2 wks & I feel like im either going to murder them in cold blood or divorce their son! The inlaws are intending to return again in Feb 15 for 3mths! My grown up son also visited in June for 5wks to which my partner says he was equally stressed sharing the house with others! Apart from building a granny flat im at a loss as to how i can make this any easier. The inlaws have OCD cleaning so ive come home every night from work to find my house has been re-arranged, scrubbed, cleaned & invariably a dammed napkin placed under anything on the kitchen surfaces! My BBQ & garden have been assualted by their over enthusiasm domestics. Friends say they would love someone to clean their house but this isnt normal cleaning this is Kim & Aggie in the flesh! I do however realise its inevitable that family will want to visit for extended stay but i really need advice on how others keep their sanity!
  11. Hi hope someone can advise me on my 72 yr old dad in law who wants to buy a car & insurance it here whilst he stays with usin oz for 3mths next year. Will he be able to insurance it as a non resident & will his age be a barrier. I personally think he'd be better to hire a car but again the insurance might be difficult in view of his age?
  12. Get in touch with Leanne Stevens she will be able to advise you. She was very good at liaising with our employer & also assisting them with the paperwork . Could you also offer to pay the cost of the employers contribution? Good luck
  13. Also remember when you get to oz there's also gap training required before your licensed, cost us $2600.
  14. We came on a reccie, opened yellow pages in the hotel & rang the first company. Had interview in smart casual wear! Got offered job, just completed first year with them!
  15. Have you looked into the cost of it as we where all intent on bringing our beloved audi TT until we got a quote for the luxury tax, import tax, potential cleaning costs, shipping cost! Alas poor Edith the Audi was "rehomed" & i now have Bruce the Prado!
  16. We had to tell work once the vetassess was passed as we needed the boss who was a dentist to sign all our documents. Ironically they'd already sussed out we where going as we had done a recci a few months before & we told them it was a holiday. Didn't get to have a big leaving do as our visas where approved on the Monday & my partner booked our flights for the Wednesday! I gave 48hrs notice at work that I was leaving! I was in shock for months at the speed we arrived & did feel I'd missed out on saying goodbye properly!
  17. Hi a friend brought a neom candle in her shipping & it arrived safely. You can buy Yankee candles here as well just slightly more expensive. There's a shop called dusk as well that sells some lovely smelling candles
  18. Not sure if this applies to all 457 but we needed skills assessment for ours last year. 457 always has a negative press on here but it can be a means to an ends for some. We are lucky visa approved & arrived 4mths after the job offer. A year in we are been sponsored for PR by the company. So for us it was a permanent move. Ive met people recently who've arrived on PR visas & only stayed in oz 5mths & gone home because they couldn't find work so at least we've secured employment before we arrive & take the leap of faith
  19. Thing's happen in life sometimes unexpectedly & ive got private cover & had to use it for a hospital procedure recently. I decided to go privately after waiting for an emergency appointment to see a urologist which to date I haven't got 3 mths after my initial referral. So if you can wait then you probably could use medicare however for me I've had everything done, im back to work & im out of pain all within a few weeks rather than month's of waiting.
  20. We rushed to get over here so opted for 457 we soon realised that its harder ( not impossible with a large deposit) to get a mortgage & generally feel vulnerable. As a result we've approached our employer who's agreed to sponsor our pr now. Alas weve to dish out more cash for this & stress again over the same things we did last time. So definitely go for pr if only to save the money in the long run
  21. Weve an insurance through our agent that deals specifically with eviction & the relevant court proceedings & also covers lost rental during this process so all is not lost in the event of feral tenants
  22. Jeyes fluid the lot! They opened every tool box of ours but I'd cleaned everything throughly with jeyes! I can still smell the bloody stuff 8mths on & ive still got the contact dermatitis it caused !
  23. We had to re home our dog wen moved to adelaide as he'd failed rabies twice. The breeder initially took him back but ive recently made contact via Facebook with his new mummy! She sends me pictures & updates me on his goings on! Its delightful to see him so settled & happy. She has provided him with a forever home & he's basically her pampered pooch. So although its horrendous having to leave a beloved member of your fur family behind there can also be a happy outcome to it . Good luck xx
  24. We decided to carry on with our health insurance & im glad we did as I was referred to see a urologist & basically im still waiting for an appointment months after my GP marked my referral as urgent with the public system. We used the health insurance & had the surgery done quickly & they met all the hospital costs. Medicare will only cover you for the public hospital fees & not privately. Im sure there are loads of others who've used the public system & been very satisfied with it but for me I never got to compare it as I never got my urgent appointment! !
  25. I would definitely recommend a rekki! My partner secured a job in may last year on ours & we were living in oz by sept 2013. The rekki was specifically that for us & not really a holiday. We looked at areas to job's, areas to live, rentals opportunities, we viewed show houses & we went to coles! When we did arrive we where familiar with the place already which certainly helped us to settle in quickly. So for us the rekki provided us with the opportunity to work & live in oz with some financial security knowing we had jobs waiting for us.
