  1. thanks all! for now, I think we will be in northern NSW, subtropical climate, so very humid but not too unbearable as some places up north. I did find the humidity problematic but I reckon I'll get used to it. I love the idea of beach walking and generally getting some sunshine after Scottish winters lasting for 6,7 months!
  2. thanks for your response. the "getting fit" part and the outdoors lifestyle is just one of the "pluses" to a very informed decision to move. it has to do with career choices and laid back lifestyle, and the beautiful australian flora and fauna is just another aspect of it.
  3. i dont think they contact them unless there is a particular reason for it or a problem, but more experienced PIOs might know this one.
  4. i was wondering the same thing but I reckon they would have told me if something was wrong by now! so i am hopeful:)
  5. oh dear! breaking up is very depressing, not to mention when the visa concerns and waiting to move get involved. sorry james!
  6. got that too... i'm not surprised people inquired, it was a rather confusing survey to receive :twitcy:
  7. An experience: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/dec/03/when-getting-an-australian-passport-becomes-a-kafkaesque-nightmare
  8. same here guys! got the email, few days shy of 7 months processing... :arghh:
  9. agreed with above. in our case, PIO was the agent! we did it ourselves, preparing docs over the course of 2 months, by reading through the migration booklet and just about every PIO post and question on the topic. and at times, even agents contribute to the forum, which is fantastic. but in complicated circumstances, I see how an agent would be very useful (provided that one can afford one).
  10. congrats to Chany!! do keep us posted everyone - fingers crossed for the other april applicants! xx
  11. maybe people just did the health checks earlier than the 3 months? this rule was set because the meds expire in a year so people have more time to validate the visa as far as i know. I did not receive any feedback about visa type, but I assume it will be 309. Is there any point emailing our COs and asking for more info or would we get the standard response? Mainly I am worried that the xmas holidays will push our grants to January:/
  12. this sounds realistic and really useful! it is true - expecting myself to magically become (to paraphrase jimmyay1) a super-fit wonderwoman might not happen without some proper investment although the sunshine and warmth might help. and the beautiful natural wealth Oz has to offer!
  13. thanks for the responses - those are all valid points and interesting thoughts! i know it can get too hot to do much during the day (depending on where one lives) but it will be great to feel some warmth and fresh air. when it is dark and dreary in the beautiful but bitterly cold north of the UK with only a few hours of daylight (overcast daylight!!) and a winter cold that lasts a good 6 months, i do crave the sunshine! canoeing sounds fantastic - so does cycling!
  14. Hello lovely PIO people I have a question on lifestyle changes which you anticipate or have experienced after making the move to OZ. there has been some talk about preferring the weather and the outdoors, the sunshine and vast open spaces... i'd love to take up hiking / bushwalking and generally have a more outdoors-oriented lifestyle. so I am wondering: what lifestyle change did you make / notice? specifically, did you take up any particular sports or acquired new fitness habits? do you feel better / healthier? any recommendations?
  15. and language is a social-cultural construct, therefore related to culture.
  16. i think there are definitely cultural differences to take into account when discussing this issue a great aunt is an aunt for some people / cultures, based on level of closeness. certain social and cultural contexts have different kinship structures that influence naming and emotional closeness. HOWEVER, the argument here should not be what an aunt is in what culture and to whom but what this factually means for australian immigration - which is what rupert was referring to previously - and what it all comes down to in the end.
  17. what snifter said. apart from the thread, if you type in the search bar "partner visa" of 309/100 you will find an immense amount of useful info and experiences regarding the process, medicals, police checks, time frames. yes, i love this forum. it led me through very step of the process and now im just waiting:)
  18. Cheese, I submitted about 2 weeks after you, still waiting. Keep us updated:) xx
  19. question, as i am genuinely curious: can one do domestic helping (cleaning, babysitting etc) without getting paid? room and board are provided but still this is considered unpaid work, free labour?
  20. I am surprised at the amount of discouraging views on this thread. I mean, surely there would be part-time work for an international student - Australia has a great deal of international students and many of them DO have part-time work. I understand that employers might prefer a more flexible Australian student with no restrictions, but surely a student on a full-time course cannot be expected to work almost full time hours anyways, as it would interfere with their studies? Students in the UK are usually encouraged to work no more than 20 per week regardless of their visa status (those on a full time program) and many have part-time jobs... Surely there are positive experiences about working on a student visa since so many students in Australia ARE IN FACT international...
  21. if you sent more than they needed, they return them...they returned our photos but we sent family photos, some photos from trips etc. they also returned the police checks (the originals)...
  22. i see what you mean about planning the 8-9 month mark and not getting worked up - but i can totally relate to putting one's life on hold as newbie wrote. i find this final stretch more stressful than the 3 months before the medicals and police checks! :arghh:
  23. same here snufkin! early may applicant here, very impatient:) couple of us have been following this here thread too: http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/migration-issues/196048-309-de-facto-partner-visa-april-still-waiting-5.html says some april applicants have been granted, though I find it hard to see a pattern (some get granted, some don't, depending on workload etc) so all we can do is hope and speculate:)
