  1. where have you read or heard that they can withdraw your visa? That would be just fantastic: you paid thousands to get the visa because they told you there is a need for you, you get here, spend thousands to stay and try to find a job and may even be that you use up all of your life savings just to get the visa withdrawn than go home and live on the street??? oh no.....
  2. hopefully there is a job (ANY JOB) for both of us. In theory if you are on the brink of a financial crisis you could ask to be "relieved from your moral obligation to Canberra". As it is a PR visa even it being Subclass 190 there are no conditions to the visa. Should be able to work anywhere. Canberra is a nice city with a lot of open spaces. I think once we get out of the super expensive short term accommodation scenario our mode will improve as well, as the weather does!
  3. why, because every place you go that is what are told? No offense, but isn't that admitting that corruption in Canberra is sky high? And nobody have ever told us or have we read that before. if you do not believe me, I will record it the next time when that statement is echoed. On the other hand, thank you for the tip about the meetup website. and to be clear, we don't expect to be walking into any job. And we don't wish to be treated specially but given a fair chance to a job whatever it may be. Nothing more nothing less. There are a lot of doors listed in the yellow pages, but we can only knock until we have the means to support ourselves and that has nothing to do how much we like Canberra. You can say anything you want but that won't change the hard facts: for an immigrant in "the job market is pretty dead in Canberra right now"...
  4. yes you are right that hard to research from oceans away, but what are you suppose to say as a new migrant to the town, when a Centerlink employee tells you not to even bother to look at the jobs what they list because almost all of them are "already taken" than you walk into an agency, whose job is to hep you to find a job, tells you to just email the resume and someone will get back to you - no offense, but this is so unprofessional, especially in a Capital of a country. We are still positive, but how should one keep up hope in the long term if nobody wants to even talk to you. Why don't you just say it straight) goes for the government): we have no need for any professionals but for those who are Australian citizens to wannabe migrants. and shut the damn door on immigration to ACT. Or when someone tells you "you can only get to places if you are networked in in Canberra". Yeah, thank you very much for the advice, rather why aren't you willing to make suggestions that there is this social club and go there or here to help you create that network. We won't get back on that ship to the UK, mister. We're here to make home and if Canberra doesn't want us, there are many other regions to go. And it will be Canberra's loss nevertheless to say......
  5. luckily we know people in Melbourne and may find emergency shelter if Canberra sucks our bank accounts dry. But if any of you knows any jobs that the posh Canberrans with multiple masters degrees won't take let us know. We are Brits after all so "no worries!"...
  6. Any work, we'd do anything. We have been using Seek for weeks now, applying for jobs with individual attention. Yes, there is a freeze on jobs because of the elections and the stance in many places you walk in is sort of "repelling". We do not know anyone to network in with and Canberra not being the cheapest place, we do not have $40000 to go through and wait for something to happen. We get no support (not that we want it) from the government, not even the local one. All we want is a chance, but if there is none we'll have to take some steps to get released from our obligations, no matter how we like Canberra. To be honest it is a bit upsetting that there are so many jobs open on state sponsorship that do not exist. Why on earth....
  7. After speaking with EVERY job agency in the town jobs are scars. Companies on hire freeze unless you know someone at the right place. All agencies empty that is not encouraging at all. 90% of the jobs unreachable for new emigrants due to requiring citizenship or government clearance. No wonder this forum is so quiet. You, recent immigrants, how are you doing with your job search?
  8. I am not certain if you have been to NYC but you might want to go. Or even Tokyo. Times change we have to just get use to it. What else can you do?

    Fit in or go home

would it be sarcastic to say that we Brits drink because of the weather? :-)
  10. cannot tell you anything else but do what the state requires. After all, I assume you'd like to secure the sponsorship right? if your profession is not on the Skilled Occupation list you can only apply for Subclass 190 I presume. If you go to Skillselect, you have all the info you need listed including processing times, guidelines and occupational ceilings. Hope this helps...
  11. yes: now you need to apply for state sponsorship if yet you have not done so
  12. we never had problem with Fords besides fuel economy and dodgy Dealer services that they wanted to sell you on "you need two new wheel bearings" when you didn't. Up until now or Fords one design policy, cars designed in Germany (mondeos) were the best. Trucks and large cars such as the F150 and Crown Vic made in the US. Don't know about the ozzy ones though....
  13. We have not used an agent. If you go to Skillselect and look it up (under the points tab it is there). It is 15 points for your degree (if you had it recognised through Vetassess). Your maximum combined points you can claim is 20 for education (let say you have 2 diplomas, it wouldn't be 15+10 points, but 20 only in total). Good luck!!!!
  14. as Alan mentioned it before, we were advised not to be excessive on points at submission. We could claim 75 points but submission was with 70 even so it was for subclass 190 at the end (6 months priority processing vs. 12 months on SC 189)
  15. so you're saying it only happens once a year?
  16. Just seen it on the news. Some record rain falls recently. Hope everyone got a boat....
  17. it is more likely to have the extra security just in case DIAC decides not to reward you the points you claim....
  18. we got a close call in Victoria a year ago, it was a Wallaby but luckily hopped across the road out of braking distance. yet it is horrible to hit anything. Here by us in the UK it is mostly pigeons that cause alarm

    Flights :)

We flew with Cathay Pacific last year and couldn't be happier. We changed flights in Hong Kong though. We got the best fare by calling the airline directly.

    Form 80

he/she was cutting corners than! This is from the letter we have received: CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS Evidence of Character - Overseas Police Certificates You must provide a police clearance certificate from each country where you have lived for a total of 12 months or more in the last 10 years, these 12 months are calculated cumulatively, not consecutively. Country-specific instructions on how to obtain a police clearance is at http://www.immi.gov.au/allforms/character-requirements/character-penal.pdf. Form 80 All persons over age of 16 years must also complete and immediately return a Form 80 Personal Particulars for Character Checking. Note that Malaysian citizens born before 1978 must provide old and new Identity Card numbers at Q14 of the form.

    Form 80

to our knowledge, anyone applying under Skillselect will need to fill that out. In our application (after lodging) guidelines it said form 80 is a must. We were asked for it. You do not have to upload it but I certainly would fill it out and have it ready when the CO ask for it.
  22. you should probably add her with the new passport data. Marriage license will be required by DIAC anyway and I assume that would contain her maiden name
  23. thanks, but why would you hate Fords? Anyhow, we may end up with a Beetle !
  24. No offense, but Berlin is not Eastern Europe, Not even Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and all the ex Yugoslavia countries are. If you want Eastern Europe, that is Romania, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. Just because the Russians were granted the stay and installed communist governments in these countries, it doesn't mean that Continents were moved. Politics should be left out of geography. Just saying....
