    Time to move back

All we can say is that you should go back before you sell off here. A lot has changed in the UK and not for the better. Prices are up and wages are not, plus the country is flooded with people from all over the world, especially EU countries like Romania etc. And the lifestyle hasn't got any better, nobody has moved the country into a better climate. I think you will regret it but that is up to you. Go back first and look around and I am truly meaning it. You get ups and downs everywhere. We are mainly here because of the lifestyle so you should think it through....
  2. Nothing wrong with Canberra as a town, but as you have pointed it out it is very hard to find jobs with a PR when most places require Australian Citizenship. And yes, there are jobs in the private sector but very few with exponentially higher applicants and because of that, plus the ACT government incentives to push laid off governmental employees into employment, you have very little chance in getting a job It is not easy to network either, especially when you are forced to take some part time casual job that stretches into late hours and weekends. Let's face it is tough to meet people that way. Everything happens between 6 and 8 PM...... at the end you need to do what you need to do. It is a skilled visa and you did not get schooling/training to become a shelf stocker in life in Coles. And nothing against that, but if you can do more why shouldn't you be allowed to do that??? and agree, we don't want to take away a citizen's job. The is not the intention of any of us.....
  3. Great, you have got the same answer we did! Exactly the same wording, so it must be a pre-made reply letter! Good luck in NT! We are working on looking somewhere else as well.....
  4. please do tell how? because we had to have ours evaluated through VETASSESS as per Immigration requirements.....
  5. look at Gungahlin, that is where all the new buildings are brought to life. I can recommend Elders real estate agents, they did good for us. As for prices it ranges from $300 (for one bedroom or studio) and up, but you may find a few houses for rent (3 BEDS etc.) for 350-400 AUD/week as well. Rent a car, you will need it! Book into Ibis Styles Canberra Eaglehawk for two weeks (you can do one week but that is a bit more pressure especially while you getting over jet-lag ) it is just outside town in NSW (north side) and explore from there - good and cheaper than the ones in ACT. PS. benefit of getting a unit is that you will not need to pay water bills (only electricity) if it is body-corporate! So you can save there too! Hope this helps, good luck!! As a carpenter, go to one of the building sites and talk to a supervisor and get a job ASAP!(well you might need to do a safety course -one day and does cost about $100 first).
  6. oh, and it won't affect your citizenship: your visa has no restrictions (as per the reply to us from our ACT settlement officer)
  7. How about writing to your ACT migration officer and get her/him reply to you in this matter. At least you'd have an OFFICIAL reply in this matter that you can save. We did and all I can say, no worries. But it makes you sleep better because you have it in writing from an ACT agent. We are off here soon, fingers crossed. As for the survey, fill it out. I believe there is a section where you have to state if you have moved and why. Give them the business! After all, it is your livelihood at stake and since you are not eligible to benefits you need to go where they really WANT you. Btw, do you like Darwin still?
  8. move on and get into Aussy telly..you are living the NOW not the PAST. And you are breaking the law by using proxies and such.......
  9. I don't think that is the case.....
  10. I doubt that the Americans evacuated hundreds of thousands (referring to all the homeless and such, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx and Harlem). Maybe people should get out and visit other places (have you been in Washigton for instance????). People are who they are and that is beautiful about it..Nazis wanted a perfect world! Concentration camps..anyone remembers?
  11. sad, but how long will it take for Australians to realize they made a huge mistake by voting for Abbott (not that Rudd is much better). When will Australia enact the same laws as the US: if you are born abroad you cannot be a PM. First the Car industry is going, now the Navy Submarines will be built in German? What is the definition of selling off a country? The government has an image issue thinking the PM is equal to the US president flying all over the world and acting like a big shot while he cannot fix his own country. Tell you what the USA has trillions of USD in international debt and they give no squat wanting it paying back by imposing sanctions on their own citizens. So why are we even surprised by this? It is not only wrong but shameful too...
  12. Hello All, after a year struggling in ACT, I might have an opportunity in Townsville QLD. Not knowing much, I would welcome recommendations to suburbs not so far from beaches. Since we have no children yet, schools are not important to us. Also, is there any particular industry where my husband should look for employment? He is not that picky after getting nothing in ACT, but his background is in finance and accounting. He is a great handyman who grew up on a farm and had his hands dirty many times before.
  13. try Hays and Cantile. Look on Seek every day. And try to get security clearance somehow (wait you gotta be a citizen for that). And wishing you better luck than we had after a year here....
  14. If so, how did you go about it? It is at a point now that we are seriously debating moving out of ACT because of ZERO jobs in the ACT. Correction, there would be jobs but those require security clearance we do not have. So after 10 months in working casual jobs here and there with no prospect of a job in our professions we have no choice but to look elsewhere but would like to to it without any theoretical repercussion on our prospect of becoming a citizen in 3 years. Please, do not say "there is no condition to your visa", we know that yet we are hear a case where someone moved out of their state under a permanent state sponsored visa and got their citizenship. If you are one of those people we'd like to hear from you.
  15. You wrong there and why would I call something a Letter Box if it is parcel size so it is a Post Box to me since the use is universal. and like it or not 90 per cent of the time I am home when the postman ( or postie as you call it) delivers. He just never makes it off his moped or his van (or whatever he uses to deliver the post, could be a donkey what I know) and it is not about what country and what nationality. It is about doing a job or not. And I do not care if you are a martian, if you are a postie, you should deliver the post because that is your job. Period
  16. who carries it is not the point but the service is...if you get paid for a job do it.... and indeed often it is a LETTER sized and would fit in so it is clear that the POSTIE carries it
  17. there is a sign on the post box with the same message (or ring neighbor) at no avail.....
  18. indeed, I never had any issues from DHL or other couriers....just the darn Australian Post
  19. Same issue here in ACT and not only that, since I have filed an official complaint and was supposedly "resolved" it is now worse, I had a parcel or two go missing and a parcel or two that did not require signature and would fit the mailbox had to be collected at the local depot, which is out of my way and takes 30 minutes to get to. Just yesterday I snapped at the woman at the window because it is so annoying. Our postie doesn't even ring at all. I hope to catch him in the act one day and film him, but who wants to sit in on a stake out for ours? And I am not sure it would help. Once I caught one at the box and told him about my problem and he said to me " can you imagine me ringing every bell when I have to deliver 400 parcels?" I couldn't believe what I've just heard and all I could say is "isn't that your job to do so?" of course I got a smile and he zipped away...... And at one point I thought the UK postal service was bad, living in a rural setting we got mail once a week. But at least you could arrange for re-delivery, same in the US. It seems to be a taboo here in Australia to even complain about it. I contacted the local newspaper a few times and they wouldn't touch it.....
  20. Soha, I do not think you get it. Have you applied for nomination from the ACT? Lodging the EOI is not the same as applying for ACT nomination. I suggest that you should use the link I've sent you and get in touch with someone from ACT, because lodging an EOI, which is Expression Of Interest is no guarantee that you will get any nomination. Visa processing times might be 5-6 months but you could wait months for any invitation to arrive. I hope you understand what we are saying....
  21. First off, you need a lesson in life, by discrediting a country for any reason will not earn you merits and even less help. We moved form the UK only because we wanted to do more outdoors. England is as much beautiful than any other country and Germany has its own beauty as well and so on... At 21, I do not think you have the right to draw any conclusion about any country, kiddo.... Moving to Australia has nothing to do with where you from. But I feel that with an attitude, you might take away a chance from someone else who likes what Australia offers. It is not different than anywhere else, jobs are hard to find and money is not growing on the trees. I would advise you to go and visit (as we did) before you even put your application in, once again, what happens when you end up not liking it, will you want to go to America then? In any given country you will get jobs and better jobs through networking only. I think you should better these skills, because I am telling you now, that if you go to a country just to take away a local's job (because that is how people look at a migrant) the economic and other bashing of any country will not work in your favour. You don't have to take anything to heart I say here, but if you came to me with a story line you just presented here, I would not even look at your CV before showing you the door. We all go through hardship in some form,l some are more fortunate than others, so they are affected less. So man up dude and start your making your life happen, wherever you are. Also, you will need ta least $30-50 000 to emigrate. Keep in mind, it is not just hopping on the plane and hopping back on if someone doesn't want to give you a job. 7 months in, we are still struggling to find a permanent role. FYI. As to your original question, browse the threads here, and go to www.immig.gov.au where you'll find all the information you'll need. Look at the points and look at the occupational lists. Good luck and if I have offended you in any way, I have only done so in YOUR best interest and my most sincere apologies for it....
  22. Rich and wanna be's are the same everywhere. You cannot see it better than in Canberra, where public servants earning our tax payer monies think they own the world and look down on you if you do not wear the same cheap suit or work in a similar role. That is not different to UK or US however. Depends who you are. We both have University degrees but are very down to earth in this prospect and a hard working worker is the same in our eyes as is a high earning executive as long as they are not snobs. Snobs and wanna be's are the reason that society and Earth is not a much better place than it is....
  23. John2012 Port Macquarie is lovey and has the most livable climate in Oz not to mention being the body surfing capital of Australia. We have been up there for the Easter weekend, escaping Canberra brr into a pleasant 27c Sunny Coast. We've also visited the Koala hospital, which had an open day that day. We are seriously considering moving up somewhere there, Taree, Forster all nice..... We too feel, that there is no reason for us to move back too the UK. Oh,happy days......
  24. We have visited Bairnsdale a few times and we like the whole town and the area. If you like small towns (with English standards it would be a village size probably) it is great. If you are from a big city (London, Manchester, Glasgow etc.) and you like the big city lifestyle you'll be bored. As Petals said, if you into boating and fishing, the beaches etc. you'll be right at home. Lakes Entrance is close by as well and that is a Victorian holiday spot and commercial fishing town. Just south of Bairnsdale is Raymond Island which is lovely and a koala sanctuary :-) ..a very cozy spot indeed. Good luck and yeah, we are coming to visit ! LOL
