Thanks snifter. I got through after an hour and they basically said I need to speak to immigration, who are now closed. But that to get an Aussie passport she will need a certificate of citizenship. We have annual travel insurance and don't go to the UK without it - agree it's an essential.

Thanks for all the info. I stupidly hadn't considered discussion with the passport office (I'm on hold to them now), I'd tried to get through to immigration without success. If the birth cert hadn't taken 6 weeks to come through, then the passport 5 weeks we'd have had plenty of time also get an Australian passport. And I thought getting the passport photo of a 6 week old was stressful!!

I'd seen this, but does she need an Australian passport to return to Australia? Do I need to log her with immigration? When I go through the process to apply for an Australian passport it asks me to tick which piece of documentation I can provide to prove citizenship and include parent's Aussie birth cert, parent's Aussie passport or parent's Aussie citizenship certificate - we don't have any of these as we're PR, not citizens. Any ideas?

My question is about what I need to do to make sure my new baby can get back in to Oz after a trip to the UK on a UK passport. I'm PR (186 visa, 2016) and recently had a baby in Australia. I understand that she's eligible for Australian citizenship. I'm taking her back to the UK for a 2 week trip in a few weeks time. I applied for her birth certificate and then a UK passport for her which has just come back, so getting in to the UK shouldn't be a problem. The birth certificate got returned to the UK Passport office for some customs breach at Heathrow so is somewhere in the post again and so I can't currently apply for citizenship/Aussie passport for her. What do I need to do so that there's no issues on our return to Australia?

I understand that for acquiring points (for 189 visa) I can use a General IELTS score. Can I use an acaedemic score for this purpose also? It's not clear on the immi.gov.au website and when I phoned I moved from number 11 in the queue to number 10 in the queue after 15mins on hold so gave up, though I will try again.

I absolutely feel this. I'm happy to use my annual leave to visit everyone and I don't mind driving the length of the country to do it either. It's not their fault I moved to the other side of the world. Of course it would be lovely if they came to visit me, but it's a huge commitment for them. I'm on my second trip back in 14 months. I love my new life in Australia and am rarely home sick, but I love my family too and want to see them. I suppose it makes a difference that I didn't leave the UK because I hated it, I left because it was economically the right choice.

Yes, we did meet up, but haven't got round to meeting up again. I'm certainly happy to meet up if there are a few of us.

MaryRose - yes I had looked at the website extensively but the above refers to payments not made, rather than how payments are made. I phoned QCAT but their advice but the lady on the helpline didn't know either, so I phoned the RTA who clarified things for me. For anyone reading, the payment is done directly between the parties.

I work near Caboolture. I wouldn't live there. Narangba is by far the best option of those you've given, and there is some quite affordable housing compared to other similar areas.

Last week a QCAT tribunal found in my favour in a tenancy dispute and our landlord has been ordered by the tribunal to pay some compensation to me. In the UK I understand that they would pay the court, then the court would release the money to me. I can't find any info online about whether there is a similar system here, or whether I just ask them for the money directly. Does anyone know?

Hi Skippy. I'm a GP. I've not been here that long so don't have extensive experience of secondary care consultants and who I'd recommend yet. The practice owner/senior GP has a handy list of people in the Caboolture/Redcliffe/Brisbane areas that he recommends which I can look at if you like? If you go through the public system you can often choose your consultant, though some specialities will only accept local referrals due to demand. In that case you'd be restricted to the neurologists within your local hospital (which may be a few, but may be as few as one).

Skippy1 I'm working between Brisbane and the Sunshine coast and it's taking about 6-12 months for routine "category 2" referrals to be seen at the moment. Category 1 referrals are urgent and often get seen within a week or 2. I haven't referred anyone who's been categorised as a category 3 so I don't know how long that's taking at the moment. Categorisation is done by the Neurology department when the triage the referral.

Sorry for the further question on this topic. I'm currently here on a 457 but may get PR at a later date. Does my 12 months start from when I arrived in the country on a 457 or from when I gain PR (if I do)? BUPA say I can't have hospital cover while I'm on a reciprocal arrangement, is this correct? They want to increase my premium to $7000pa for no additional benefits to avoid the 1.5% additional tax on high earners, but that's a different story.

We've just used Golden Arrow and were very happy with the service. We used a separate company to transfer the animals from Sydney to Brisbane airport and collected them there (though they could have been delivered)

I did do this in the end and it all went as it should. We were very grateful for the extra baggage allowance!

I found most had a points system, where different documents scored different numbers of points and the total had to equal or exceed 100. The agencies all had slightly different requirements, but documents requested included passport, driving license, proof of income/pay slips, utility bills, reference, birth certificate, medicare card etc. On arriving in Oz we made sure we got our Medicare cards and Oz driving licenses sorted out asap which helped considerably with rental applications, and also sent a covering letter with our documents explaining why some of them (like utility bills) were from the UK. We had no problems with being accepted.

Lots of us GPs are moving here. The stress GPs (and most other staff) are under in the NHS is immense. Earnings are down. There is also the up and coming changes to pensions and the stress of re validation which are pushing many older GPs to retire. I'd like to move back to the UK eventually. But I don't want to work in a system that forces me to work in a way that's unsafe for patients, and I value my own sanity. In both countries, in the conurbations you'll be able to see a doctor on the same day if you need to. In both countries if you want to see a particular and very popular doctor or a doctor who's currently on holiday and not back for 2 weeks, you'll have to wait a while.
