  1. Hey guys, im already here in Sydney, been here for 5 months now so if you need any help or advice don't hesitate to ask.
  2. So, what's everyone up to this surprisingly sunny Saturday arvo? Im gonna go the footie watch Dragons vs Panthers then head into the city for a few beers me thinks.
  3. Hi, I am here on a 457 visa with my wife who is a nurse, and like yourself I am a scuba diving instructor. She was required to undergo a medical, whereas I didn't have to have one. Insurance wise, we had to provide details of insurance for travel and the first few days when we arrived until we signed up for Medicare cards. So you will need to get something in the meantime to cover that - only costs about 100 quid or so. hope this helps where you moving to??
  4. I live that way currently, as im in Kogarah. San Souci is nice, ive cycled through it a few times and seems pleasant enough. Im moving to Cronulla shortly though, which is a further 5-10 mins drive south than San Souci, as I like it there. But yeah its a decent enough area.
  5. I teach scuba diving for a company there so spend a lot of time there on weekends. My wife loves it there as well, as its the whole continental feel, the cafes bars, restraunts etc. You free for a beer sometime?
  6. Certainly feel your frustration, been there done that. My wife got a sponsored visa as a nurse so we had to wait for all their paperwork to go through before we could apply directly ourtselves. However, once visa was lodged, and all paperwork was in went through really quickly, and the feeling when you get that email confirmation is unbelievable - champagne moment
  7. I got offered one there as a shark diving co-ordinator, as im a scuba diving instructor, but accepted a job as manager of a gym in Hurstville instead. Im currently living in Kogarah, which isn't too far from Oatley, but im gonna move to Cronulla shortly, I just love the shire and the atmosphere there. What ive seen id recommend their for a young family.
  8. Anyone here live around Cronulla?? Currently living in Kogarah & working in Huurstville but moving to Cronulla in a few weeks time. Been here in Sydney for nearly 5 months, and my wife and I would love to meet up with some more people for a beer in the near future.
  9. Hi guys, just wondering if anyone lives in the Shire on here? Ive been in Sydney for nearly 5 months now, and going to be moving to Cronulla in a few weeks time, and would love to meet some people who live down in gods country. Seems most people here gravitate to the Northern suburbs/beaches, which can be quite a trek catchin up with them. Plus Cronulla has some awesome bars!!
  10. guys, just saw this thread. Ive been in Sydney for nearly 5 months now with my wife and we're lovin it. We live in Kogarah currently but gonna be movin to Cronulla in a few months time as we love it down that way- anybody else live that way??? Love to meet up with some of you guys for a few beers sometime.
  11. Hey guys sorry for the VERY late reply to a topic we started ourselves. If its ok, we'll pop down to the Cargo bar as well to catch up with you all if thats ok. Be nice to meet some fellow brits. will pm some of you my aus number, if someone can get back to me that'll be great G&S
  12. Hi we are a couple in early 30s who arrived in sydney 2 days ago wondering if anyone fancied a beer in the city this weekend.
  13. Hi just arrived in sydney two days ago. Getting sorted, bank accounts easy to get just went in the branch with passport and account opened in 20 mins. phones ok just picked up pay as you go sim but not able to get contract as we have no perm address yet. medicare sorted for 3 months just filled in a form showed passport and copy of visa conformation this we can also extend for full 4 yrs once we have perm address. so all in all we have done great in first few days just waiting now till monday so we can get the estate agents to show us some flats, we contacted them online at home so hopefully we will be ok. Looking forward to a great weekend exploring sydney and it night life.
  14. Bruce Springsteen hit Sydney March 18th, anyone fancy watchin him with me? My wife cant stand him, but the guy is my idol and ive watched him several times in the Uk Thought id see if anyone on here fancied goin as well?
  15. Shes got a job at Calvery Healthcare on the rehabilitation ward there. Were looking at houses in Kogarah and surrounding subburbs like Rockdale, but will obviously go as far as likes of Carlton etc. Who wants to go to Manly from Kogarah? apart from when the dragons play the sea eagles, thats only time i'll go, although the beach is gorgeous there.
  16. Emma, we're between St.Helens and Blackpool, but time is short otherwie would have met for drinks definatly, have to wait till we get there i guess.
  17. When i was in Brisbane a few years back, the bar on the south bank had a great selection of ales on tap, rather than likes of VB & Tooheys (which are still more drinkable than what we have on tap here), if i cant find somewhere im gonna start my own bar off and import cumbrian ales lol
  18. I'll do my best Gail, i'll make it my personal pilgramage to find a decent watering hole lol really am looking forward to it, although busy busy busy in the meantime. Not only am i trying to get the house etc organised, but im also doin my personal trainer course with an aussie company so tryin to get all my work done before i get there since im shipping my academic textbooks !
  19. Hey guys, just a quick question regarding mobile phone providers. Im movin to Sydney on 2nd Jan and will need to sort out a new laptop upon arrival as well as a couple of mobiles for my wife and myself. Ive heard several people say that vodaphone is garbage so i'll probably stay away from them, whilst other say that Telstra are ridiculously expensive. The 3rd option is Optus isnt it? Just want peoples opinions on what they're like save me faffing around when i have a million and 1 other jobs to be doing when i land
  20. Hi, my wife and I are moving to Sydney on the 2nd Jan !!! 23 days till we fly out, cant wait. Sorted temporary accomdation out the other day using WIMDU (or something like that), found a nice place for the first 9 days so we can get a rental sorted in the meantime, oh and find the local pub - just hope i can find somewhere that sells Real Ale !!
  21. Wife has a job at a hospital in Kogarah, so initially want to get somewhere near to work till we get settled, saves long commutes. Not saying we'll stay there long term, but its as good a starting place as any. Plus with us both being HUGE rugby league fans, it helps having the Dragons located there
  22. Thanks guys, we're in the process of sorting out accomodation for the first 7-10 days after arrival, and have already been in contact with estate agents in the Kogarah area. Most are shut till the 7th Jan, so we're gonna arrange viewings for then so we can hopefully move in asap from there. In the meantime, we'll just enjoy the january sales, pick up what bits and bobs we need, hopefully grab a few bargins on essentials, and generally just enjoy that week as we get our bearings.
  23. Flights are booked for the move to Sydney, out of the Uk on the 31st, arriving Sydney on the 2nd Jan, countdown has truely begun. The house is boxed up, seven seas collecting the stuff on the 27th. Even better, i sold the house the other day, so thats a massive financial relief, just got to try and enjoy the time i have with the people that matter now. Just one question though, i have asked it before on here but couldnt find the thread. Im looking at rental properties already for when i arrive, what is the best direction for your property to face? Obviously, here in the Uk you want to get the sun in the evening, and when i asked on here last time someone did tell me, but i cant remember what was best. With us going in the middle of summer, dont want the living area to be cooking in the mid day, rather have the sun setting on the balcony when it gets late on.
  24. Just a quick question, do 2 pin travel adaptors work in Aus plug sockets? Lookin at buyin a handful of adaprots before i set out at end of Dec, and research im finding says that the 2 pin US adaptors work in Aus sockets. Dont wanna buy a shed load only to find they dont work! Thanks
