  1. Hiya we have just returned from validating our visa and are also looking to be moving later in the year if everything goes to plan. We also have 2 kids, girl 6 and boy 4 today. Which area are thinking of settling in? We stayed in Black Rock for our holiday and loved the area. We checked out some schools which were all really nice so feeling positive about the move.
  2. Hi all We have just returned from a trip to Black Rock to validate our visa and can't wait to make the move to the Bayside area once and for all. I currently work three days a week as I have two children, and the grand parents do the school run for us on those days, and cover the school holidays. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are term time jobs available over in Oz ? Thanks
  3. Hi We are not living in Australia but have just come back from Melbourne....with our 3 and 6 year old. Melbourne is amazing and has everything you need for you and the kids...beaches are beautiful, parks are amazing and we met loads of families during our short visit who had the same opinion. The weather was warm, mid 30's, but the weather can change daily. We had 36 on Monday and 18 on Tuesday so it does offer a cooler climate compared to mid Australia (Perth across to Brisbane) in my opinion. Like I said, we are not living there (just yet) but I wanted to give you my opinion. Melbourne is a fantastic place
  4. Hi all We have just come back from Black Rock in Melbourne to validate our visa and we are looking for areas to rent in when we move over later this year/earlier next year. We want to live in the City of Bayside and near the train line and have seen a few places in Highett but are not sure about the area. Does anyone out there live in or know about the area? What are the pros and cons? what are the schools like? Cheers guys Andy
  5. Hiya, yes we looked at Mordialloc PS last week and didn't like it. Will probably look at Parkdale or Aspendale Gardens. We are unsure of the zone for Parkdale, do you have any idea?. Did you manage to meet people easy enough when you first arrived? Sarah
  6. Thanks for reply, we also thought about Parkdale and Mentone as the school is supposed to be good in Parkdale. Did you find it easy to meet people in the area?
  7. After staying in Black Rock for the last three weeks we have found that houses prices are out of our price range. With Mordialloc only being a ten min drive down the cost we felt it was just as nice and affordable. Sarah
  8. Hi all We have just been staying in Black Rock in Melbourne to validate our 176 visa. We are now looking at potential areas to move to with our 4 and 7 year year old children. Can anyone advise on the area of Mordialloc ? Is it a nice safe area to bring up children? Also does anyone have any info on any good primary schools in the area? Cheers in advance Andy
  9. Spot on, thanks gwolst77, I will keep an eye out for the Lebara sims....may be able to get one from the airport :-)
  10. Hi all, We will soon be arriving in Melbourne for our reccie trip and we will be taking an iphone and an ipad. What is the best thing to do regarding sim cards? Do we keep our O2 sim and set up international roaming? Do we buy a sim in Melbourne and use that? Will it work in any phone? Can you buy tourist micro-sims for ipads? Questions....Questions..... We are going to call O2 later to see about international roaming but wondered if anyone had first hand experience? Thanks in advance Andy
  11. Thanks guys, I think we are going to get some Myki Tourist packs from Melbourne airport when we arrive so we can get started. Thanks for all your help. Andy
  12. Hi All, We are arriving in Melbourne the week after next and although we are hiring a car for our stay we want to use the trains/trams etc Does anyone know if Myki cards are available at Melbourne Airport? We will be after the Tourist Pack (being tourists....for now ) Thanks in advance guys Andy
  13. I went alone but I contacted a couple of Agents first just to get an idea of what information I needed to collate. They will probably send you an information pack of some kind......I used this to do it myself. As long as you are organised and be aware that you need to give LOADS of information and spend some decent time sorting out what to send to where you will be fine. Plus you will save a shed load of money, exactly what you need when you take a look at those flight prices :-)
  14. Hi all we are arriving in melbourne in 3 weeks and staying in Black Rock. we have organised a rental car for the duration of our stay but are also planning on using the public transport in melbourne. What is the best way to use the transport? Are the trains or trams the best to use? where would the best place to get the train/tram from Black Rock? do we need to get a 'travel card' of some kind (like in London) or do you just pay at the station? We are planning on using the car for the longer trips, Healesville, Geelong etc but want to use public transport around the city.....parking looks the most expensive I have ever seen! we are trying to be as informed as possible before we arrive so we can hit the ground running (after we have recovered from the jet lag!) Im calling on you experts out there to help me out! thanks in advance Andy
  15. Thanks so much to all of you, you are all helping us loads in narrowing down our search for a nice area for us and the kids. Like I say, we will be in Black Rock so we will scour Aspendale, Edithvale, Mordialloc and surrounding areas, see what rentals we can find and what the area is like first hand. We may go into a few estate agents and see if they can help us?? Can anyone recommend a good estate agent to maybe try? Thanks Andy
  16. Hi BB We chose Aspendale Gardens as it is kind of in the area where we would like to be. We are staying in Black Rock for our holiday and its not too far from there. The house prices are a bit too much in Black Rock but seem to be much more reasonable in Aspendale Gardens. We also like the look of Chelsea and Chelsea Hights. Its so tough to find somewhere....looking forward to seeing everything up close rather than on a computer screen  Andy
  17. Hi all, We (Me, the wife and our 3 and 6 year old) have our 176 visa and are coming over to Melbourne in 3 weeks time for a holiday and a reccie visit. We have made a coupe of appointments with schools, Berwick and Aspendale Gardens, but are still having trouble finding suitable suburbs for us to rent when we finally move over in December. We like the look of Berwick but are a bit concerned about the distance from the city. Can anyone recommend any suburbs with a similar feel/make up of Berwick? Endeavour Hills? Narre Warren South? Keysborough? Cheltenham? We are looking for a nice area with modern houses, decent schools and not too far from the city & beach (isnt everyone) Its a mine field!! Is there anyone out there who understands our dilemma and is able to offer some tips? Cheers guys Andy (Sarah, Briar & Jesse)
  18. Thanks for all the help guys, its greatly appreciated. I will get my CV ready and start the hunt early 2013 :xmas21:
  19. Hi BB, Thanks so much for this; Yeah, its so difficult deciding on the best, most productive steps. Ive seen lots of jobs on seek.com.au that would be perfect but I'm holding off applying before I am due to leave. I have seen on some forums that people can be offered jobs before they even arrive, Skype interviews etc. Its just very strange leaving a job here and NOT going straight into a new one....arriving jobless 15,000 miles away sounds like the most stupid thing to do in the world but a lot of people do it...and are fine....like yourself. I will keep looking and maybe contact a few agencies to make them aware of my situation. Andy
  20. Thanks MaryRose02, will have a look at their site
  21. Hi All I am looking to try an make contact with a few IT recruitment agencies in Melbourne in preparation for our move over to Oz in 2013. Can anyone recommend any good ones? Or has anyone tried other methods? ie possible sponsorship? Cheers guys Andy
  22. Brilliant, thanks guys, I knew you would all come through with some top ideas! I am creating a nice long list so keep them coming
  23. Just incase anyone reads this thread again, we got our flights through netflights.com. They are with Emirates Netflights are regularly having sales on Emirates flights so keep looking on there for deals Andy
  24. Hi all, We have 2 weeks in Melbourne in February. We have 2 young kids (age 3 & 6), along with 4 adults :cute: Can anyone recommend some cool things to do for both the kids and the oldies, in and around the Melbourne/Victoria areas? Cheers in advance
