  4. hi, roadworthy cert is needed on all used cars..only lasts 3 months tho. when a person sells a car they must have the road worthy done, if not dont touch it, it is like an mot all dealers should have it done, again do not touch it if it hasnt, unless you are good at taking risks we tried buying a new car when we arrived, but credit company wanted copies of payslips (x3) so thats 6 weeks worth as you get paid every fortnight here. i wouldnt risk an application as if declined will affect your credit rating here, so direct effect if you want to buy other goods or a house. be partient and wait till you get here i would recommend fully comp insurance and break down cover we used BUDGET seem to be cheapest for us hope this helps, its damn confusing weve been here 6 months and still finding out new stuff everyday

    Telstra

we have telstra broadband and mobile phones...no real issues i think the problem is you go into the stores and the service is good, but as soon as you talk to customer service is terrible we have to go with telstra as out in the sticks we had no problems getting any form of credit in australia and weve been here 6 months
  6. id be buying an Asian make, cheaper parts etc how about kia, honda, toyota buying a car that size with about $6K will be quite a struggle we bought a honda jazz for $11K 07 plate 10 months rego, 57K on the clock....just goes to show how expensive cars are here melbourne car super market maybe a good place to get a deal
  7. my wife got a job as a leading teacher on her 2nd job application it is a permanent contract as you may find the job adverts go on about cover teachers etc and temp contracts BUT we have moved to east gippsland as many jobs in Melbourne are highly competitive as she found out if you are willing to live out of melbourne you should get lucky its good at the mo, teachers have just had another pay rise and the work will not be performance based unlike the way the UK will be going soon get your VIT number as if you dont have that no one will look at you thanks
  8. hi, i was a youth worker in the uk for 15 years and moved over here after applying for about 20 jobs before we arrived it wasn't worth it, no one will look at you unless you are here i have an MA in youth and community work aswell as loads of others and it isnt worth it i'd say get here and apply for jobs, unless you need the points for migration purposes i now work for a company called vista as a team leader earning 55k pa they were ok with looking at my quals but mainly exp here in oz the traditional youth worker doesn't exist its more case worker, social work related, drug and alcohol as australia does not have a state or country wide youth service hope this gives you a picture of what its like to get a job etc cheers and good luck
  9. i actually think you have a one sided view of life australia is totally different to the UK go back to the UK if thats what you need to do
  10. get ambo cover aswell you can get cover for 1 year plus if you call 000 for an ambulance without ambo cover it will cost you thousands of $ easy to register on website

  15. is there any point in renewing your passport, we do not plan to go back if we do we will have our aussie passports can anyone tell me if you need to?
  16. we read the rules of the road before we left
  17. it doesnt work that way here in oz, they look at your earnings, outgoings etc then see what deposit you have and what risk you are, if you are high risk you pay mortgage insurance to the bank a one off payment to cover the bank if you mess up pop into a bank and get more info if you earn enough its about what you can afford to pay, this hopefully stops people buying houses they cant afford to buy i could buy a house for $798000 but i wouldnt we are looking at $350K which the bank is happy with and can see we can afford it there are also of ways you can mix and match your mortgage so you can over pay without being charged hope this is ok
  18. been here 2 months, 1st application and 1st interview and got the job so exciting but scary at the same time job is team leader in supported housing project nice salary package too

  21. great post a couple of things if you get a 24 month contract with most utility companies you can transport them to another address so will save money in the long run applies to broadband and elec / gas cars - yes expensive, but be careful of who you purchase from, dont sign that contract until you are sure perth sounds very expensive compared to where we are living, so im quite shocked about your bills good luck with it all and keep it coming
  22. we are in maffra, gippsland, only been here 2 months and was shocked to see the smoke, gum leaves falling on roof, but the fire was up around liocla (I should of been working there this week) and glenmaggie lake/coongulla area we have friends up in valencia creek and the whole sky was orange quite surreal but could see dense smoke and some flames, but lucky the wind changed direction and blew back up into the wilderness park. Not sure why Sale was on alert as fire was no where near it and we've only been on alert once we have been listening to the radio but now it seems to have calmed down and good news that hotham is ok aswell best place to info is on the CFA website it did rain for about 30 seconds today all i can say is thanks to all fire fighters who work so bloody hard to save peoples lives and property
  23. best thing to do is rent a furnished holiday rental for a month, then take a visit to all the places you have thought about you will then get a real feel we have been in mt martha/mornington, very nice, but expensive and a fair trek to the CBD, but we have driven through a few places i wouldnt think of living in im glad we are moving to the sticks petals you are so correct about the city, it goes for ks upon ks, so chose wisely before you commit to anything
