The so-called skills shortages are a scam, false, and a rort. There is an over-supply of skills in IT and other sectors in Australia and there are not enough jobs. Why are professionals driving taxis and doing menial work? We migrants are actually disillusioned, especially those who come from Asian and African countries and the Indian subcontinent. These migrants spend a lot of their money and all their life's savings to migrate. They sell their property and everything in their home country and come here. But when they arrive here in AUS they are left to fend for themselves. Aus Govt. is luring migrants form these countries under the false pretext of "skill shortages". It's all about the housing and property market here, and Australia is inviting "fillers" to come and buy.

Catalyst2012 Here are some tricks of the trade you need to implement if you want to get calls from Melbourne employers and agencies if you are searching for jobs from Perth. Here is it how u can do it. Option 1. Do not put your current Perth address in your resume. your contact details should only contain your Mobile No. and email. Option 2. Put a Melbourne address in your resume if possible, in your case you can put the address where your family is staying in Melbourne. when u get a phone call from any agency or employer from Melbourne, explain to them tht you have a place to go to in Melbourne and that your family is also based in Melbourne, they will buy it. I was in the reverse situation, I was based in Melbourne, but nothing clicked there for me, so had to move to Sydney. When applying for jobs in Sydney, I removed my Melbourne address from my resume and just included my Phone no and email in my resume. Started getting calls from Sydney agencies and employers and then finally landed with a job in Sydney. Had to move my whole family too after a few months. Whenever I used to get calls I used to convince the agents and employers that I have close family ties in Sydney and hence I want to make a move to Sydney. The agents will trust you.

Software Testing contract rates are getting low day by day. It was around 600-700$ a day at one point in time (5-6 years back) and now it has dropped to as low as 400$ a day, irrespective of your years of experience. Is it something wrong going on. Though there are plenty jobs in Testing in Sydney but rates are quite low these days.

Does anyone out here has any idea as to how employers or recruitment agencies select candidates. Is there any particular process or a format they follow when selecting from a list of applications ?? I am noticing that despite my skills and experience that I portray in my resume match the job description 95% of the times, how come I am not getting any single call. Any thoughts or any information on this will help.

I rather not say wht my ethnicity is as some people might become judgmental. I can just tell you that I am a non-white guy and my is also not western.

bogdan, first it was a phone interview and then they invited me for a face to face interview.

Last week I got a call for an interview from a recruitment agency with one of the employer. The interview went fine, got selected and next day the recruitment agency told me to provide references. I gave them my references. Reference check done and were fine. Offer was about to be released to me. And the employer backed out stating that they don't require the position anymore. This somewhat amazed me and could not buy it. Did some digging and background investigation into the employer and the situation.....got to know the reason for not giving me the offer. The reasons were astonishing. Problem was with my ethnicity. Just could not believe it. But still I won't take names of the agency or the employer. Sometimes I keep wondering whether I have really come to a developed country or not ??

Its been 3 months for me now since I started searching for job. I have a great 2 yrs local experience under my belt. Inspite of that not getting any calls. neither from any recruitment agency or from an employer. This country is really getting on my nerves.

Hi Nish89 I am too from Pune.. wht a small world it is. I did my visa from opulentz but they are just like a courier service. They don't advise u much on the quicker ways to get a visa and they are definitely not MARA registered agents. U could go with Vahista Consultancy, which is on NIBM Road, Kondhwa or with someone else. Try to get someone who is MARA and who also has an Immigration lawyer with them. By the way, how are things out there in Pune. Its been 3 yrs for me now that I have not visited.

Swamps..... Its better to stay back where you are. I myself sometimes believe as to why the hell I came into this country. Just because ppl can't pronounce your name you won't get a call, makes no sense to me at all. I believe I deserve to be in a better place than this. Slam.... I mean a complete name change...e.g if your original first name starts with J and last name starts with B....u could convert that into 'Jeff Burrows'.

I am in Melbourne at the moment and my employment contract is getting over next month. I specialize into Software Testing including manual and automation testing. I have total 8 years of experience including 2 years of local Australian experience. My English communication skills are also not that bad :sad:

sad to see people struggling on the job front. I am an IT professional too with around 8 yrs of experience. It has been 2 years now since I am in Australia. My expereince is tht inspite of having a good local expereince and a strong technical skill set it is a big struggle to find a job. My employment contract is finishing next month and I am still unable to get any interview calls as yet. I usually pick and apply to only specific jobs that match my skill set, yet I have not received a single call, neither from the recruitment agent nor from the employer. I think the primary reason mght be ethinicity. From what I have observed is that it is quite easier for people from english speaking caucasian background to get a job compared to people from African, Mid-Eastern or Indian background. So for non-caucasian people my suggestion is that try and change your name on the resume to some 'English' name...such as 'Jeff Burrows' or something. It might give you an edge. If nothing...atleast you're phones will start ringing. Good Luck Folks !! I am too joining the pool of unemployed.

This is the biggest joke of the century ? You calling me a racist? LOL !!! What do you have to say about your people's attitude when I came into this country and the job application rejections I had to go through? What would u call that ? "Genuine explanatory reasons" ? Look at yourselves in the first place. And by the way when you talk about "problems at work" I must be offered work in the first place !! And about my attitude, don't expect me to keep a smiling face when someone throws **** at me. I have worked in the US for 5 years and it was amazing. Got promoted twice in 3 years time and over here no one cares about your skills and experience that comes along with it.

It’s been 2 years now since I came into this country and I have never experienced such a racist attitude towards outsiders. I am an Indian and I have experienced too much of hardships in finding a job. I am a software engineer and in spite of having dynamic skill set and experience working in numerous technologies I was not called for a single interview for 7 to 8 months. Jobs are rare out here and outsiders are not entertained. Only when I changed my name in my resume to an 'English' name I immediately started getting calls for attending interviews. In interviews they make you feel as if you are a novice and do not have the skills to work. This proves the point that Australia is a racist country. The AUS government claims the country to be a multi-cultural, but in reality they are not. Secondly, the pay rates are not at all equal, the employers differ their pay rates as per the ethnicity of the candidate. A white guy having the same experience and qualification will get more than any other. People used to tell me that one must be able to speak in AUS accent in order to get a job offer. WHT THE F@##!! If I am able to speak good English how does the accent matter? I have lived in United States for 5 years and have never ever experienced this kind of **** treatment. Americans give priority to your skills and expertise and not to your ethnicity. Moreover talented people are always welcome and promoted. It doesn’t matter at all whether you are an Indian, African, Middle Eastern or a white. I was much better off in US. They are much diversified and open to other cultures. AUS Govt. is just looting outsiders by showing them false hopes and promises of having a good life in the country. But over here its total ****!! How can you call yourselves a DEVELOPED COUNTRY if your brains are not yet developed? Let me tell you one thing dear AUS, Indians can outperform whites in any technology. Throw a challenge at us and we ready for it. Whites might have ruled the Indian sub-continent for 200 years but don’t forget we are much smarter than you and have beaten you at your own game. We have the largest pool of engineers and Scientist and the civilization started from us. So what you guys think you are? Rulers of the whole World? Well, that’s History now. It’s we who are ruling you indirectly. (If you can’t believe it, Then look around you) So goodbye AUS, Relocating back to US. hey sewersadie, u cud have thought abt moving to Melbourne. cost of living is damn cheap and its multicultural. IT jobs are better than Adelaide. Public transport is also excellent. i am too an IT professional and I have been here for more than 365 days for me. and plz dont get any furniture from IKEA ? we got all our furniture from IKEA and believe me it sucks even though its cheap. our screws just wouldn't fit into our wooden beds and TV cabinet. and yes..Hawthorn's the best than ur Adelaide Crows !!!!
