  1. Congratulations Val & Matthew on your offer being accepted - you've certainly been busy in those 3 weeks. Have a safe journey Angie & Ted, keep us in the loop when you arrive and let us know how your doing. Five more weeks until we leave for our 5 week trip to the Bayside, we're hoping we can arrange a little meet up! Until then......................Val x
  2. Hi Phoebe, I'm attaching a section of my 143 grant letter so you can read what it says directly from DIAC; Resident Return Visa (RRV) Once the initial permission to travel and return to Australia ceases, permanent residentsneed to apply for a Resident Return Visa (RRV) if they wish to travel overseas andreturn to Australia as a permanent resident. An RRV is the label that is placed in thepassport which identifies the holder as a permanent resident at immigration clearanceon return to Australia. It is evidence of permission to enter Australia after absencesoverseas and to resume residence.Eligibility for an RRV is generally based on the amount of time spent in Australia as apermanent resident, although there are some concessions for people who cannot meetthe residential requirements. If a person departs Australia without an RRV, or itexpires while they are overseas and they are not eligible for a further RRV, that personwill lose their right to return to Australia as a permanent resident. Further informationabout RRV is available at any DIAC office in Australia or overseas or can be obtained from the DIAC website. I'm not too sure if the time spent outside of Australia would have an impact on qualifying for citizenship - the rules are certainly not easy to follow. Each individual is unique; some might migrate and never go back to UK but others, for whatever reason, may have to come and go. Even though we have our 143 now, we are nowhere near ready to go permanently as we have the house to sell and the business to finalise. This too has posed many different scenarios as we don't know if we will get jobs. One idea we had was to see if OH could do 6 months here then 6 months there which would at least give us an income but not sure how do-able this would be. Hope this helps, Val x
  3. Hi, Yes, that's correct. Once you have been resident for 4 years you are eligible to take up Australian Citizenship thus allowing you to have an Australian passport. You can still keep your British passport as well. So, you exit and enter Australia on the Australian passport and enter and exit UK on the British passport. Once you have both passports, you can please yourself where you live..................always assuming you have the funds! A friend of mine has done this, he lived and worked in Brisbane for just over 4 years, got his citizenship and passport then came back to the UK to work some more. He intends to retire in Oz in a few years and meanwhile, his Brisbane home is earning a nice little nest egg from his tenant. We'll be lucky if we can afford a tent when we get to Oz the way its going with the housing market in the UK at the mo! regards, Val x
  4. Hi Moira, We are booked to go on 25th November BUT only for a visit. Our daughter & SIL are having another baby early in November so we'll be there to welcome the new arrival and for Christmas. Then its back home, get all the last minute indoor jobs done (painting, new carpets etc) then put the house on the market and see what happens. Its very difficult as my OH works away all year and is only usually home December/January so all the house stuff has to be done then as I'm useless (but good at tidying up afterwards!) Hope you get some longed for news very soon - I'll keep watching out for your announcement. Regards, Val x
  5. Hi there, we sent the bank cheque this week so I assume we will get tne visa in the next couple of weeks.
  6. Hi Val & Matt, Glad you've arrived safe and sound. Had a little chuckle about the bacon! 9 weeks till we arrive so we'll be asking lots of questions if we manage to arrange a meet up. Keep us up to date with your adventure! Val x
  7. Hi Moira, Your'e right, it is a palava! If you haven't yet got your CO, I would contact your ANZ branch and ask them to send you the forms to allow another signatory on your account. Or, there is a branch in London who might send you the forms - number is 0203 2292436, have a chat to them and see what they say. I wished I'd have thought of that for our visa now! At least you can be doing something which will save time while you wait for your CO. Let us know how you get on! Regeards, Val x
  8. Hi Moira, I thought about you when DIAC wrote and told me they won't accept my cheque. It seems that their definition of a "bank cheque" is the same as our "bank drafts" or "bankers order". In other words, a cheque which is issued by your branch. Unfortunately, my daughter has no authorisation for our ANZ account and so she can't do the transaction and we can only spend $10,000 per day. I spoke to the manager today and she has caved in to my pleas and will allow my daughter to collect the "bank cheque" from her local ANZ branch provided she takes her passport and some stuff with her address printed on (utility bills etc). I have had to send the bank a scanned copy of my passport, my daughters passport and the invoice from DIAC along with a letter confirming that I give my permission to allow her to collect it. Does your son/daughter have access to your account? If so, you will probably be ok. If not, check to see what your daily limit is. Ours was only $1000 per day but we upped it to $10,000 ages ago but it took a week for it to show online. I could have moved $10,000 per day to my daughters account until the £32,010 was in her account BUT she banks with ING and has no branch and we havent the time to wait for her bank to post it out to her. If you start making your arrangements now, you wont be stuck like us when the time comes. How long do you think it will be before you have to pay for your visa? DIAC have let me have a bit more time to get the cheque to them but it will probably get there by the end of next week. Hope I've made sense of it all to you. Good luck with yours, Val x
  9. Hi Angie, I sent an email when I'd calmed myself down. I asked for a bit longer but pointed out that the cheque he had in his possession would be just as good as a "bank" cheque. We did toy with the idea of putting the money in our daughters account BUT if we had, there would be nothing left! She loves spending and has a poor memory when it comes to paying it back. I know this because I lent her the money for new garden furniture last October and she swears she paid me back - she didn't. We'll just have to see what the ANZ bank manager can come up with when she replies to the email I sent her this morning. If the worst happens, I can move the money to said daughters account at $10K per day then she can do the silly bank cheque. Gggrrrr! Anyway, have a lovely break in Devon - hope the weather improves for you! Val xx
  10. Hi Val & Matt, Glad today went as planned. I don't know how you must be feeling right now and I guess between now and Sunday life will be seen through a blur of tears BUT just think of your new adventure and all those real live hugs rather than Skype! We wish you both well and very much look forward to our Moreton Bay meet up (hopefully) in December. Safe travels, Val xx
  11. OOOPS! What a complete plonker I am! I sent the cheque from my own personal ANZ account last week using an expensive courier. It arrived on Friday. This morning I get an email from our CO saying its not acceptable and he is returning it to me! So, I log on to ANZ to request a "bank" cheque and I can't have one of those either as my daily spending limit is only $10,000. When I've calmed down I'm going to fire off an email to the said CO to ask for more time. Short of getting on a plane, I don't know what else to do! I've emailed our bank manager to see what she can do (not holding my breath though!) When we paid our CPV 173 last October they let my daughter pop in and pick up a cheque and she sent it to DIAC so fingers crossed, they'll do it again this time. So glad my blood pressure appointment was last week.................................. Will keep you posted! Val x
  12. Hi Moira, Yes you are correct. The time already queued is taken onto consideration when changing to a 143 or 173. Cheers Val x
  13. Hi Angie. Yes, we are having Christmas on the Bayside again this year as we have another granddaughter due beginning November. We managed to get really cheap flights with Singapore back in May. We are nowhere near ready for going permanently just yet. We're not putting the house on the market till next spring. My husband works away most of the year (he's back at the mo) so all the decorating and garden jobs have had to wait until he's had time to do them. Nothing is selling nearby so I hope things start moving again next year. Will be great to finally meet everyone and swap hints and tips on surviving the big move. Cheers! Val x:wub:
  14. Hi Moira, I sent the cheque to DIAC on Monday and I got a message from DHL last night to say that its been signed for at the Parent Visa Centre. Just keeping my eye on my ANZ account now to see when the money is debited from the account. I have no idea why they prefer payment by other methods but it said on my email from the CO that a personal cheque was acceptable. Good luck, I'm sure you'll get your CO very soon, Val x
  15. Oh Angie you know me so well. We will be in the Wynnum/Manly area from end November to end December so yes, drinks and a meet up would be lovely. I sent the final VAC payment via Dhl on Monday using a personal ANZ cheque. I know they don't really approve but tough! We could have our 143 by the end of the month. Lets all keep in touch, Val x
  16. hi dev007, we did our medicals in manchester and only had the letter from diac to show them. They know that parent visa applicants are not on the electronic system. Make some phone calls to the clinics on the list and they will help you. Good luck !
  17. Congratulations Angie & Ted! I suppose there'll be more corks popping tonight! Soon be there enjoying the sunshine! I got an email form immi this morning too. I asked them last week when they are likely to request the final VAC and got the usual blah blah reply. So, we booked a cheeky little week in the Canaries (going this afternoon) and today we get the email asking for the dosh. Typical! Anyway they can wait till we get home - I refuse to stress about this process any more! Have a lovely weekend celebrating! Val x
  18. hi Phoebe, great to see you on here again but sorry to learn that your health problems are still not sorted. Cant believe your youngest granchild is 17 months now, how time flies! We have another due in November and we're hoping the 143 will be granted in time for our visit to welcome the baby. Do please keep in touch and let us know how you are. love Val x
  19. Hi Fran, We contacted Singapore last year to ask for more luggage allowance and they said that as our visa was a 173 temporary one, they could not let us have more than the 20kgs. However I wrote back to thank them for their quick response and said that I wished we had booked with Emirates as they give 30kgs as standard and probably would not travel with them again. They changed their minds then and let us have 30kgs each but only on the outbound journey. We didn't mind as most of our extra allowance was taken up with Christmas presents etc. You don't get anything if you don't ask! Good luck! Val x
  20. Congratulations Val & Matt! Sorry I didn't join in with the good wishes earlier, I got a new computer and hadn't logged in to PIO properly! Hope the rest of the move goes smoothly - keep us updated on your progress! Best wishes, Val x
  21. I was filled with optimism when I read this reply from John & Eirian as I've just received my ANZ cheque book and thought I could just write one for the final VAC and send it to Perth. Now Val & Matt are saying that DIAC told them that personal cheques (and cash) would not be acceptable. Anybody else think that DIAC are making up the rules as they go along these days? Its been 7 weeks now since my daughter arranged the AoS. Centrelink have sent confirmation to DIAC and they tell me they will let me know if they need anything further from me. I thought that the final VAC request came hot on the heels of the AoS............I don't understand why they only gave us 28 days to sort AoS then they don't bother to go any further. Crazy! I'm having a glass of wine now - sod the blood pressure! Val x
  22. Hi Moira, If its an ANZ card, check to see if it is a proper debit card. Mine is only an "access advantage" card and has just 15 numbers across the middle instead of 16. It can only be used at ATMs and Eftpos machines in shops. They tend not to give you a proper debit card until you are resident. At least thats what my branch told me. Hope yours is alright, Val x
  23. Hi Va, I would have thought that your bank would issue a bankers draft when the time comes for you to transfer the house proceeds over to Oz. You could then courier the cheque to your foreign exchange dealer. The one I use confirms the rate before I send him the £££s. They email me every week with the latest AU$ deals and it depends on how much you want to trade. I think yesterdays email said that £67k would buy you AU$100k. Not good and no hopes for anything better in the forseeable future either I'm afraid. All the best, the other Val x
