  1. Thanks Pom Queen. Good to know you had an OK experience, I will probably go with backloading and will look around a bit more

  3. Could moderators move it please to Household (or appropriate) No recent topics that I can find. Decide to relocate - me wanting to for a few years, so I came up to Brisbane and got a job 8 months ago. Wife just offered a job. We have to move Melbourne to Brisbane in the next few weeks - by June 24 Keeping light on furniture and down to maybe a 2 bed worth of stuff (maybe getting rid of more stuff) Had a backloading quote from Backloading Removals backloadingremovals.com.au/ of $1700 which seems pretty cheap (other quotes around $3k) Anybody experience of the move and removalist used would be appreciated
  4. This was just after sunrise, but remove it if you think I cheated! Brisbane fog from this morning
  5. Don't want to put a downer on it, but we 'kind of' moved for our son. He doesn't really make friends easy, but things weren't so great in the UK (2008) at school mostly. We came here and he was 13 as well. Had a few close friends. When asked about moving said he wasn't bothered. He made a couple of friends, but they didn't do much. Quit his swimming, cricket and playing cello - which he was doing in the UK Anyway, he started wagging school, dropped out at year 10, quit tafe (year 11) and has quit 2 apprenticeships. He is 21 now Only has 2 mates from school and in the last 6 months has stopped doing anything, just sits in his bedroom every day. We think he is depressed, but we can't get through to him and he won't help himself. The more we push, the more he retreats or pushes back. Trying to engage or be gentle and understanding doesn't work, nor does attempting to be strict - he spends no money, only removing internet is left. Punishment is not necessarily helpful in this situation He is bright and intelligent, but seems to have given up. Wife is a nurse and has talked with people in healthcare. But due to his age, it is up to him to start things moving unless things get far more serious. Who knows how things would have happened in the UK. But I personally regret the move with regards to how he has turned out (though don't regret the move generally). Too late to go back to the UK for his benefit, on a visit it was obvious he had grown apart from the friends he had. He also said he doesn't want to move again and lose the last couple of mates he has got. I want to move to QLD and I am in Brisbane now, we put it off before because of his issues, but we do have our lives to consider as well. I am hoping wife and son will move up here and the change will get things working again, but do worry that it will go further downwards. Maybe if we went back straight away he may have picked up with his old mates, or things would have turned out better, but we wouldn't have sent him back to his old school. Also I think he has that typical 'teenager' attitude we probably all know about (as parents anyway). Unfortunately despite everybody telling us he would/will grow out of it, he hasn't yet and we really worry about it.
  6. Hey Parleycross, I think you just contradicted yourself. Are you telling me Hanson gets equal coverage with other leaders? She is getting more than Shorten. Are you trying to stir things up in you second statement about the media or just totally naiive (which I know you are not)? As I mentioned, we don't just get comment about her speeches, we get them replayed over and over - as well as countless invites onto shows - does the media not control this? Its more free air time for her views because it makes good TV When did you last see the Greens give any coverage except negative reactions to walking out. No she's not a nutter, but she promotes what is a common issue in Australia - racism and xenophobia.
  7. Spot on (in my opinion). Trump was laughed at in the beginning, but is now mainstream TV. Same with Palmer. It happened with Reagan, but he was just a puppet, an actor who eventually literally started to forget his lines. Trump has bought his way in and is a loose cannon. However, I think all politicians have to toe the line, most decisions are made elsewhere. War and booming defence budgets are controlled by the money men (my conspiracy theory). One airstrike could be put to other much more useful things. http://ilmfeed.com/how-much-will-each-airstrike-mission-in-syria-cost-britain/ And what do they achieve? ISIS could be wiped out if there was a real desire, but again Middle East is probably more about oil. Syria doesn't have enough !
  8. What I really don't get - is the constant airtime they give to Hanson. What she is preaching is dangerous ground. Look at Europe and the upsurge in right wing nationalism in all countries. Probably the reason for Brexit, where the 'popular' vote was largely to stop the immigrants. Australia is on the conservative, xenophobic side of politics, despite the constant empty claims of being a laid back, lucky country for everybody. Everybody is online now and there is a power there to motivate people who probably wouldn't bother, but because its on facebook and twitter, they take some interest. By all means have a discussion about Hanson, but don't keep replaying her speeches and getting her on for interviews and airtime. Like most 'colourful' characters she pulls in viewers and readers, but constant reinforcing and hearing her message will get a bigger following for her. I think we are entering dangerous times where the world is beginning to turn against Muslims. Terrorism used to be about 'freedom' or independence groups, IRA, Basque separatists etc Now the media would have us think it Muslims vs the rest of the world.
  9. I m with ING and they are fine. If you pm me I can send you a referral code and we both get $75 and it is legit
  10. Thanks for replying aconcannon I did a comparison web site and was surprised that the daily charge and usage as well are more than Vic. I am in Brisbane by myself for now, so still paying. It is with same company nand we get bif discounts in Vic (30% maybe) with no contract. In QLD on comparison site, there is no discount without 12 months contract (which I don't want) can't see anyhthing about connection fee, so maybe none. In Vic you pay to connect and disconnect. I doubt they do anything though as Vic has mandatory smart meters. For a single person, hopefully bills will be lower than yours. Like I said, expecting about $15 a week, but daily supply charge is $2 to start with (for both) Electric Supply charge per day 128.117c Charge per kWh 25.5860c Controlled load 1 charge per kWh 15.8620c Controlled load 2 charge per kWh 21.9560c Contract lengthNo fixed term GasSupply charge per day 76.24c Peak cost per MJ5.88
  11. Hi All I am renting in Brisbane with bills included. Am thinking of a lease nearer CBD which requires me to get connected to gas, electric and broadband. I am OK with Bband price, but wondered if anybody knows what approx connection fee and weekly usage costs are for gas and electric. Only looking for reasonable usage ball park figure. gas required for hot water and cook top, electric oven. I reckon each will cost about $15 (couple of hours TV, cooking most nights, no air con or heating) I rented in Sydney while working a couple of years ago and thats what it cost. I did think NSW were higher prices than other states. So it will be about $50 extra a week, but connection and disconnect might be another $50 x 2 Cheers
  12. Hi Ben I came up to Brisbane a few weeks ago to look for a job and managed to snag one and I am working here now. The money is totally c**p, but the other job I was shortlisted for was paying better than what I was getting in Melbourne, so not necessarily a local thing. But generally I was being offered lower salary. I can recommend a couple of agency guys who were really good. They seem to know about a lot of local the companies and worked hard for me. I am in App support, so they might not work in the testing space, but I am sure would refer you to somebody if not the case. In one of the agencies I spoke to 3 different guys and got 3 interviews. If you pm me, I can let you know who they are. Send me a name and number so I can let them know I referred you. Not sure if these agencies do, but some will pay a bonus for a referral
  13. I don't see why anybody has to live somewhere where there is a need to take the car everywhere. My BIL did that a couple of years before we came out. We chose somewhere near supermarkets, restaurants bulk billed doctors etc. We could 'bush walk' a few minutes drive away. It was a boring suburb - Doncaster East but had everything (including a Westfield) We also stayed in Heidelburg Heights. Cheap living close to the city. Next door to Ivanhoe - a real villagey place at far less cost. Again walk to a couple of malls and 15 minutes train to CBD I am sure there will be many thinking (or telling us) how crap these places are, but what do you want. Big sprawling identikit house in the middle of nowhere on a soulless new estate? Hope this doesn't come out sounding like crtiticising, I feel for you and mostly your husband. Non stop work in IT in the UK - I have spent 18 months - and then another time - a year looking for work. You really get treated like sh*t in Aus by companies and agencies alike. The dopey granting of visas to skilled workers, who then have to spend a year learning or training before being able to work must be soul destroying. I went to Brisbane for a month to look for a job and got one where I am now living. Wife and son staying in Melb (for now?) I have been banging on about trying it out here for a few years. Got fed up waiting and did something about it. I spent a year in Sydney as well, wife wouldn't move there, I loved it - hated Melb winters. I really think Brisbane is the place for me (so far).
  14. Thats pretty much what I am after and will inspect it. Problem is utilities are most likely extra (many are included) and don't seem to have any laundry. Have to be mindful of budget as we will be double renting For sure there more and cheaper than Sydney, but I was on good money there and my salary here is pretty rubbish.
  15. Thanks for replying. I am asking on here to try to avoid the usual looking to rent 'zoo', the applications, inspections, missing out etc I worked in Sydney for a year and took a part furnished, ended up buying cheap kmart rubbish I don't want to be spending spare time collecting bits and pieces. There are a few things around, but looking closer a lot of it is student studios and nras only applications.
  16. I have posted previously, looking for accommodation, with no response. I have been looking at rentals and there are a few longer term unfurnished places I like. However, don't really want to run around and buy it all (renting in Melbourne while I am working in Brisbane) So if anybody has some or all the basics for a one bed apartment they are selling , please pm me Bed, table and chairs, sofa, TV?, kitchen utensils + cooking that kind of thing Delivery would be good, but I could hire It needs to be fairly cheap, but not too daggy cheers
  17. I have been in Oz for 8 years. 30 years IT experience with great companies in the UK, glowing references. I am good at what I do. Never out of work in the UK Aus is a total nightmare. Never been jerked around so much. Short term contracts (not looking for contract particularly) with crap money. Even here I am always told they want to keep me, but no budget etc. Contracts end and I am let go. Months between jobs. I have moved into application support here as I never managed to get analyst/programmer jobs. Wide variety of skills which can be good or bad depending on the hirers viewpoint. Just took a job and being paid as a graduate. Money not really the issue, but it is a p**s take. Manager wanted me, his manager wanted a grad. Also its a Brisbane job which I really fancy with a view to moving there. Skills will be learnt in banking, ASP.NET, C# so hopefully lead to more in demand opportunities for my last few years. I am an oldie ! Might be partly the reason for my problems, but still being messed about. However, you only need one good job and none of it matters.
  18. Starting a new job soon (still to be 100% confirmed). Mature male, in IT. Will be double renting (family back in Melb for a few months), so needs to be less than $400 a week. Want a usable cooktop at least and washer. Don't want to share. Have a few things in mind and maybe short term at first until settled. Anyway, please let me know. pm me if specific, or you want more info about me Cheers
  19. Is landlord paying water a Brisbane thing? Only asking because in Vic we rent and pay. Hoping to move to Brisbane sometime Usually $100 a quarter
  20. Hi marenmatt1 Thanks for replying Yes, I've looked at the rentals and there are a few around. I was wondering more about what its like to live there. Like I mentioned before not much info really. I don't need nightlife, but places to walk to at the weekend / evenings, shopping close by etc as I won't have a car. The buses you mention go from Brisbane to eight mile (and one or two others) and are quite frequent. I then need another bus to get to workplace and one runs every half hour, the other every hour. So the commute from Brisbane is OK, but local buses are not so great
  21. I am pursuing a job in Eight Mile Plains and hope to move from Melbourne Trying to research some suburbs around the area doesn't reveal much, so this is interesting stuff for me. I did fancy the coast - Manly / Wynnum, but without a car (until family move here as well), most commuting away from the busway seems pretty dire. Can't believe the train journey times, 30k trips seem to take an hour! Caught buses from Southbank which are frequent and the busway is fantastic, but after that they get infrequent (down past RACQ on Logan Rd). So torn between a commute (on the busway route somewhere) or finding somewhere closer while I am here by myself
  22. Why go anywhere exotic when you get this out the back door in Melbourne suburbs
  23. We have unlimited with spintel for $55 a month, no contract, no set up fee (maybe $50 connection I think) Plus I can do a referral for $25 each (pm me) Used to be with TPG and then Belong ('owned' by Telstra) with capped downloads Spintel as good as any, no problems with connection or service (no I don't work for them). Belong really screwed up our house move and customer service was crap, but they did compensate quite well after I kept complaining and eventually got a response. People complain about the cheapos, but just have a look at the number of complaints for the overpriced big boys as well.
