New IELTS Security

Bit random ... I have my exam on Saturday but just received a letter in the post to say that the place I'm sitting the exam (Bath Uni) is starting a new scheme to increase test security and that some candidates will have their fingerprints taken on the day and a photograph then if/when they leave the room during the day they will have to have their fingerprints checked?!?

Is there really such a security issue? I can't imagine needing this level of security?!

Has anyone else received similar letters for other test centres or could it just be this one? Don't really want my fingerprints taken...imagine inky fingers on the test papers

It won't be inky I expect, it'll be a digital scan of your fingerprints (otherwise they'd need a CSI type there as well to match yours to the inky card)... Can't say I'm surprised they're starting to do this, at my test they were really hot on people having mobiles and / or talking in the exam hall... We weren't allowed to leave the hall at all between exams, and you had to be escorted if you needed the loo - luckily I finished my reading test in 25 minutes, so could have a leisurely wee break... :)

The letter which I received for my exam last month stated we would have our finger prints and photos taken. About time too! I have met far too many people who look like their relative and if you have nothing to hide then there shouldn't be a problem. It's clearly to rule out those who may feel the need to impersonate another and it is a security measure. I'm sure your finger prints will only be for the purpose of IELTS and nothing else. They were very strict in our exam. One candidate got marks knocked off for writing after time was up. I was surprised she didn't get thrown out!

Wow, that IS high security. I didn't have to get fingerprinted or photographed for mine -- they just checked to see that my passport photo matched the one submitted to them. They were definitely strict on the no talking/no mobile policy when I took it. One guy brought in a bottle of water and they had to remove the label before he could take it into the exam room. I guess they figured he could have the answers on the label or something.

It wouldn't surprise me. That reminds me of the graduate admissions exams - after a bunch of people got caught cheating, they started taking our index fingerprints and wrist prints. Supposedly, there is a way your blood runs through your wrists that can uniquely identify you. All of this is done by computer - when your name is called, they photograph you, then they make you slide your index finger through a device with some kind of a wrist rest that is connected to a computer. The image then comes out scanned on a computer screen. Afterwards, you go into the exam room, which is filled with cameras lol

i have nothing to hide neither exam wise nor criminal wise i just hate the way things are going that u literally cannot fart without it being logged. listened into or watched by the government... i KNOW these are only for IELTS purposes but i am 99% certain that they will be logged into some database somewhere that is accessible by other "agencies"

For some nurses that is an average day at work, those that work in some prisons have to have their hands scanned at almost every door they pass through!

I was amazed when i did a day there as part of my induction for my current role.

Yeah, I'm sure it'll all be fine and I have nothing to hide ... was just a bit unexpected.

From some of the responses above, looks like maybe it's more necessary than I had thought. Will have to see how it goes tomorrow

If fingerprinting bothers you be glad that you don`t live in the US:laugh:. I`ve been fingerprinted so many times... NCLEX, OCN exam, at the border every time I enter the country:mad:, driver`s license and MANY others ( not the full ink card, just index finger or wrist). We also have a fingerprint-registered computers at work and PYXIS - machine where all meds are stored and you can`t remove a Panadol tablet without scanning your finger first:eek:.
