High School Issue

Hi there,

Wanted to see if anyone is in the same position as us with regards high schools in uk,

basically our son is 12 in Jan but will just be starting high school in Feb,so right now still in primary school, obviously in the uk our son should be in 2nd year of high school(year8).

Im very concerned about this & have spoken to the education board uk,but even they could not confirm the high school would be ok with letting him start year 7.

Other than advising us to get a letter from the principal stating the situation we are left guessing whether or not he will be able to stay back a year.

The other concern is we are planning to go back in February so this means he has already missed 6months of high school, would love to get back before then but for many reasons this is not possible.

any advice most appreciated

Hi, my daughter was 13 last December. We arrived back in Scotland in March this year. We had a similiar dilemma as, technically, she should have been starting in the last term of 2nd year (who were all currently doing exams at the time). After a chat with the Head Teacher of the High School, we agreed it would be best for her to go into 1st year, after the Easter holidays, as it was the last term and it would give her a fresh start in 2nd year after the Summer Holidays. This has worked really well as she has been able to choose all her subjects for 2nd year from the beginning and a lot of her classmates are similiar in age anyway so it has been no big deal.

I know from experience its easy to get yourself into knots trying to organise things from the Oz end but try not to stress too much as once your back, things are a lot easier to deal when your actually here.

Best of luck with everything.

Hi , i completely understand your concerns, I would wait until you are back in the uk with a permanent address, so you know which school you will be in the catchment area for, Most schools will be happy for you to make an appointment with them to speak to the head, Here you will be able to discuss your dillema with them on a one to one basis, take along with you any school information you have from his old school, They will be able to see how far along the education system your son is. Not all schools take on their own applications and this will have to be done through the correct channels, It will also be classed as a mid year intake, so there will be no guarantee that there will be a place for your child at your chosen school, which may result in an appeal.
