I am sending my application off as we speak and have been e-mailing an officer at the AASW and spoke to her over the telephone who has been really helpful. I have one years experience and have had all my relevant documents certified. I have discussed the requirements with her and meet them all barring the three years post experience but if you look at the actual application form this is mentioned in riterion 5 and states that if you meet all of the other requirements then you may still pass assessment. I am sending it anyway and keeping my fingers crossed. I have had positive feedback over the phone suggesting that i will probably meet the requirements but I know that isn't a given. I would contact them (it means staying up late!) and ask to speak to them. The lady i spoke to was really helpful. I can give you her number if you want.

Hi,

I am hoping to start the process in August. I am based in Scotland and completed my BS Honours in December last year. I also contact AASW and everything sounded hopeful despite the length of time post qualifying. I have 13 years experince in social work in other fields and throughout my honours I worked full time as a trainee social worker and completed my degree through distance learning. I am hopeful that this may hold me in good stead for when I post my application. Good luck with your application I will keep my fingers crossed. please let me know how you get on. Please feel free to pm me.

I will do Alison. With that much experience I would get references for your experience but I think they tend to focus more on the post qualifying experience. It won't harm to get the references though. Also please feel free to pm me too.

:yes:Thanks for your replies, I am now just waiting for my reference from work and then I will be ready to send everything to AASW. I hope everything goes well for you. It will be great to have that number just to have a chat and discuss the requirements and length of time it all takes. I just need a change from my current job and what better place to be than OZ.

Just noticed I said BS honurs instead of BA. Anyway I will get references but I know it is mainly the post qualifying experience that they are looking for.

Take care and me updated

Hi meant to ask what field of social work are you both in. I am in justice services and not sure if there are many positons out there in this field. However my background is mainly community care (older people).

Got an email from AASW today about my application. Their criteria changes with the gobvernment's migration criteria and as of July social workers need three years post qualifying to migrate as opposed to 12 months previously. As quoted in the email:-

'The issue of our criteria not allowing for social workers who trained internationally with a 3 year degree to be eligible for the AASW is an issue which is of concerns to us in the IQA and to our committee. The AASW are currently undertaking a review of Australian Social Work training and when this is completed later this year we will be then reviewing the assessment criteria we use for international qualifications, our non acceptance of 3 year degree is one of the major issues that will be addressed by this review. I hope to see our criteria change as Australia needs more qualified social workers.'

Oh well - back to the drawing board. :frown: I'm hoping that my trip to Perth in October for a family wedding will hive me an opportunity to do a few meet and greets with prospective employers. Fingers crossed. Otherwise I'm going to get on with my life for the next two years and try again unless the rules change again next year.

I did a 2 year postgraduate DipSw from 1998 - 2000. I was basically told that my course was not long enough and did not meet the Australian standard. I learned that many UK social work qualifications are assessed as 'Welfare Worker' for purposes of migration to Australia. I have never worked as a SW in Britain, but in a closely related role.

Welfare Worker narrows your options but will not lose you points under the new system. I have just received sponsorship from Tasmania very quickly indeed. The ACT and NT are also sponsoring Welfare Workers, so your dreams of moving to Oz in the foreseeable future are not necessarily over, though they might be if you're set on Western Australia.

Good luck

Hi Rick

I still wouldn't qualify for the points as I still need three plus post qualifying experience. I am stuck on WA as my sister and her family live there and I would at least have some familiar faces. Thanks for the advice and well done on your sponsorship. I'll let you know if anything comes of my trip to Perth in four weeks...:jiggy:Cannot wait!

Heya all, I am a Social Worker with 4 yrs experience and have looked into gaining a visa to work there. I tried to apply to a couple of states and they said i needed to get my quals (BA Psychology and MSc Social Work) assessed by AASW. I looked on the website and it's $850 - is this what you have to pay? Just concerned that it is a lot then you pay the £000's on the visa before you know that you will even get a job??

Am I interpreting this correctly?

And the ones that have had them assessed how long did it take etc and did you get a job???

Many thanks in advance...

Hi Jo

If you're looking at employer sponsorship then you may find an employer who will either help you with the application to AASW or they may not require it - as it is not mandatory to register with the AASW as it is with the GSCC here in the UK. However, if you're wanting to apply for a pemanent visa then you will have to have your skills assessed before they will start the visa process. It takes about 10 weeks at the moment I think. You can contact the assessing office direct in Canberra and the lady I spoke to was very helpful. You might want to do this before you send off the application as she can tell you exactly what you need to put in and give you an idea as to whether your application may be successful. It is a chew on, getting all the documents witnessed, etc but as I say if you are applying for a permanent visa then you will have to do this and yes, it is $850.

As I said though some employers may say they do not need AASW approval. Good luck.

It wasn't A$ 850 when i had it done 2 years ago. I think it was about 550 in those days and helped by more favourable exchange rate.

I have to say it was by far the trickiest part of my application and the guy i was dealing with in Melbourne seemed to be experiencing a full blown Hitler complex. They made me approach BriBristol University and change their degree certificates because they didn't like the way the word 'postgraduate ' had been used in the sentence! But don't worry, my assessment expired in July and they reissued my approval for 80 bucks in a couple of weeks.

You can imagine how they feel about 2 years postgraduate DipsW's these days.... I javelin been assessed as 'welfare worker' which narrows my options.

Don't worry. Once you've dealt with the AICW, the rest of the application Izmir a breeze .

Just a quick update..I got my AASW assessment on the 25th of October. I took longer because they had to wait until I got the axact 3yrs PQ experience which was on the 13th of October. I am now struggling to find a state that can sponsor me. Any suggestions are welcome.

Rosey I guess you figured it out, but WA is an option.

Anyone did an assessment recently? How long did it take from sending until positive assessment? We are in a tight schedule to get everything donebefore july.

Anyone know average salaries for social workers in Victoria???? my research is coming up with around 60k, is this right or not..help!!!

60k is about right. However, please ensure you use the cost of living formula rather than a currency exchange rate to make a true Aus/Uk salary comparison. To use this you need to divide the salary by 2.4 to give you a true comparison! Using this formula clearly shows a comparable salary of £25000 as oppossed to £40500 on a currency conversion. Believe me, £25000 is nowhere near enough money to live on in Victoria.
