Kids Bikes

Hi,

I arrived in Canberra yesterday and need to buy my 6 year old daughter a bike.

I have seen a specialist shop but are expensive. In the UK I would buy one from somewhere like Asda or Tesco as they are cheaper.

Are there any such supermarkets in Canberra that sell kids bikes?

Thanks,

Mike.

Being a cycling family we avoid any of the cheap big store bikes. Of course if its to be used once and left in the shed well they are ok, if they are going to get a lot of use its best to pay a little more and go to a proper bike shop.

I don't know how old your kids are but we bought our six year old an appropriately sized "Cyclops" brand bike at K-mart for last Christmas. It didn't cost a fortune and the build quality is fine--it will certainly still be going long after he outgrows it.

Edited to add: Ooops, we DO know how old your "six year old daughter" is--at least I would if I read the OP properly. Anyhow, for a six year old we're more than happy with the K-mart cyclops quality!

Juls - great tip - thanks! We went to Target and Big W. They had bikes there, unfortunately we were told it would take around a week to assemble them! My daughter will not wait a week! We promised her one yesterday. Shame as I thought the bikes were OK for what we wanted them for.

Petals, I know what you mean, normally I would go for quality, but as she'll soon outgrow I won't bother!

Bobbsy - thanks - it was the cyclops I was going to buy - until I was told of the build delay :-(

Have promised my daughter I'll drive around the suburbs tomorrow until we fins a bike that doesn't need assembling (and one that doesn't cost a fortune!)...

Fingers crossed...

We got our kids their bikes from big w and took them home straight away, o/h assembled them, it's really easy to do yourself!

Huh? Why would it take a week for a bike to be assembled!?!?!? Bizarre.

There's a big Toys r Us out at Majura Park (Brand Depot) near the airport, you could try ringing them tomorrow and see if they've got any ready assembled?

Yeah. We bought the Cyclops in a box that went under (well, beside) the tree. Once it was open, it took maybe 20 minutes to built even for an amateur like me with my 19 year old daughter helping. No issues and I know that the nuts are tight etc.

Thanks! I'm rubbish when it comes to knocking nails into walls, assembling stuff etc. My wife doesn't trust me with daughter's bike!

I may give it a go though if I don't manage to sort one tomorrow.

Will try the Toys R Us. Had a look on gumtree - nothing for her age but thanks anyway :-)

Dawny - if it's really easy to do it yourself why did you leave it for your other half to do it ;-)

Will let you know how I get on!

Ok - finally sorted it this morning... I bought her a scooter and she loves it! My bike is on the container on it's way, so will source a second hand bike for her by the time the container arrives, in the mean time scooter is perfect. Thanks all for advice!
