Bribie Island- Any thoughts??

Hi all,

Just wondered if anyone had any info on what it's like to live on Bribie Island.

We will be moving to Brisbane 16th June and I'm trying to research some areas before we come.

I've heard Bribie island mentioned a few times, it looks great online and the rentals seem very reasonable so I'm wondering whether I'm missing something?? Is it a nightmare traffic wise over the bridge or something. I saw someone who lives there say it was great but not for everyone.

We're a family of 4 with kids of 3 & 9, not really city types, always lived in rural/village locations in uk and I'm looking at jobs in hospitals north of Brisbane.

Any comments or advice much appreciated

Bribie is great, Rental prices will depend where on Bribie you live. It was regarded as a place for the "oldies" but a lot of new development on the Island has brought the down the average age on the Island. There are schools (I don’t have kids so cant advise on those). The main shopping centre has Woolworths, banks, target and all the major stores you would need. There is also an Aldi on Bribie.

Bribie Island is about 1 hour drive from Brisbane; a lot of people go to Caboolture (20min drive) and go to Brisbane by train. Caboolture also has a massive shopping centre called Morayfield. The bridge does not cause any problems and it has always been free flowing when I have crossed it. On the road to Caboolture there are fruit barns to buy your fresh fruit and veg cheaper that Woolworths.

On Bribie there is a selection of beaches to suit what ever you want. Bribie Island is a holiday island and the population grows during the summer, but not overcrowded.

Hi Ellie, we live on Bribie Island and have 2 boys one whose nearly 16 and the other is 12, Banksia Beach school is excellent my youngest was there for a year and he loved it, the Principal there is fantastic and takes no rubbish from anyone (there should be more like her)! The high school on the Island hasnt got the best reputation but I cannot confirm this as my kids dont go there. As Colin has said in his post there is never any problems getting on or off the island over the bridge, it gets busy but I have never been held up because of it.

The beach is gorgeouse on Bribie, especially if you have a 4x4 and can go further up the island theres also a few lagoons along the beach which are like getting into a bath but these are only accessabile by 4x4. The only pain of living on the Island is the 20 min journey to get to the highway from the island, its not a hard journey just slow due to the speed limits. If your kids are interested in sport there is every sport available. There is an arts centre which always seems to have something on. On an evening its nice to go down along by the Jetty at Bongaree and have a BBQ watching the sun setting, there are lots of free BBQ for public to use all over the island, I have never come across one yet that has been dirty they are always clean. It s not for everyone here as it can be very quiet , the Island after 8pm seems to go dead, its more family orientated as in people socialise at home more than go out to the pubs, there are a few nice places to eat on the Island but they are all shut up by 9pm. People are very friendly and helpful and it appears to be very safe .

Hope this helps.

Hi Ellie

Claire and Colin have said pretty much everything you need to know about the island, it is very family orientated and even the surf beach is safe for little ones because the island is protected by Moreton Island on the surf side, so the waves never get too big - perfect for surfing beginners like my 14 year old. There are plenty of coffee shops and cafe's, we go fishing off the jetty or watch the dolphins playing and fishing under the bridge.

There's a skate park for kids, the Arts Centre does pottery classes for kids on a Saturday morning (and kick boxing lessons through the week) there's cheerleading classes, library events and an Aquatic Centre where my kids go to swimming squads 2-3 times a week.

Nippers (kids' Surf LifeSaving classes) are held on a Sunday morning on the Surf Beach at Woorim, there's a Surf Club and two Golf Club which serve lovely meals.

If I think of anything else I will let you know.

Post script to my previous post, Caboolture hospital would be the nearest to Bribie :cute:

Sounds like a lovely place to live. Is it possible to commute to CBD Brisbane? I presume drive to Caboolture and park and then train? what is the cost of parking/train? Approx journey time?

I currently have a drive of 60mins to and from work, so use to the travel, especially to live in such a wondufull place.

Thanks in advance.

If you lived on Bribie its about 20-25 mins to train station, car parking is free (amazing isn't it )!! But it does get very busy at the station an places fill up quick, but nearby is a multi storey which is also free. !! If you catch an express train in to the CBD its about an hour from Caboolture, My husband commutes everyday. The train fees are really cheap and also there is something called a Go Card and if you get one of these it works out even cheaper too.

Hope this helps.

If we go into CBD we always use the train. The front & rear car parks at caboolture are normally full, but you can park on the other car parks near by. The 'GO' card gives you a discount on the train fare and is worth getting if you travel a lot. The Train fare also covers you on Bus's in the CBD. I take my wife to hospital by train for her appointments and it cover us for the bus fare to the hospital as its in the same travel zone. We did not know this the first time untill we purchased a ticket one day and they told us. We had been paying for the bus!

Train fares are very reasonable when you consider that if you go into CBD by car its can be expensive to park there and a nightmare to find you way round when not used to the city.

Hi,

Personally I think Bribie is the ideal place for families, with its safe beaches. But as wilth all places I would suggest renting for a while, just to make sure its the right place for you and your family. I presume you have read this thread and it should answer most of your questions about bribie.

Good luck with your move.

Hi there

I was just looking at Bribie this morning as there is a possibility of a job for my hubby in Sandstone Point. It does sound gorgeous but I was just wondering what private schools are in the area? My kids are 13, 11 and 4 years. I would need co-ed and would like them to all be able to go to the same school.

Thanks

Emma

Hi Emma

Sandstone Point is on the mainland, just over the bridge from Bribie - a 5 minute drive away.

Private schools in the area that seem to be popular are Grace Lutheran College (the main site is in Kippa-Ring/Rothwell but is serviced by a school bus that comes and picks the kids up and drops them off) but they also have a site at Caboolture which is newer and also has a bus facilitating it. That's about 30 mins away from Bribie/Sandstone.

The other one close by is St Columban's College, at Caboolture, lots of parents seem to send their kids there.

Hope this helps

  • 3 years later...

Our mates live on Bribie and we stayed with them for a while last year when we went over on our validation trip. They absolutely love it. They have 4 kids, three at Banksia Beach school (where the hubby half works as a teacher) and 1 little one who will go there soon. The wife runs her own waxing saloon from home and really loves the local people she meets. All in all, they're really happy with where they eventually settled after a couple of rentals in other areas around Brissy.

Hi, we are looking at a move to Bribie in 2015, anymore updates from people moving or have already moved here??

We go there quite a lot for day trips. As always, the issue is how are you going to support yourselves. There's no industry to speak of, just tourism, a bit of retail etc. To earn better money you'll most probably have to commute off the island. And that's where it gets no fun. What do you have planned for employment?

I'm a nurse and partner a carpenter, so would both have to commute but hopefully not yo far. Reading this thread back in 2009 it seemed younger families were thinking of setting up home there, wondered if this now was the case as we have visited the island for a week early 2013 and really liked it. For me it's just meeting people with young children as I will have a 1 and 3 year old by the time we move.
