Metoo
Hi, does anyone out there keep fish, a whole subject in itself, but has anyone taken a fish tank to Australia with them? did it survive? I have a custom built tank which would cost a fortune to be rebuilt, I want to take it, anyone out there think I am nuts?

Bobj
Hi, does anyone out there keep fish, a whole subject in itself, but has anyone taken a fish tank to Australia with them? did it survive? I have a custom built tank which would cost a fortune to be rebuilt, I want to take it, anyone out there think I am nuts? G'day mate, I have 2 tanks, one for the tropicals and the second for their offspring. Tanks can be surprisingly cheap without the stand. The average home tanks are in the 48" class and sell in Big W for about $100 with air, heater and lights. Not too difficult to have a tank made up. My son has a 5ft tank for his barramundi that was made up. He did some work on a mate's car and his mate made a stand in return. Great fun for the family, gathering some of the native fish for the tank...almost tropicals, rainbow fish. Cheers, Bobj.

Metoo
Just to elaborate a little, the tank is 6' x 2' x 2' 10mm glass, and has been built to be fully plumbed for a marine reef set up, it weighs 132kg glass only and was custom built to my spec

With you being a mad keen fisherman and in your travels have you heard of any reports lately of any Bonefish being caught in Australian waters. I was fortunate enough years ago to see a school of Bones in Exmouth. Since then I have been all over the place and am at present back in the UK. I keep trawling the web etc, but can't seem to find anything. Just thought with your fishing knowledge and contacts you may have heard something. Cheers mate in anticipation. Bobj
Thanks very much Bobj, I have put it in my favourites :jimlad: Mate, buy a snorkel and mask, go to Leeper Reef, Sarina Beach (you can walk to it when the tide goes out) and check out the blue damsels...squillions of them. Well, maybe a dozen, or so and yellow damsels Cheers, Bobj.

I would advise anyone keen to have a generator on standby. That was the end of my hobby alas.
Guest guest30038
Hi, does anyone out there keep fish, a whole subject in itself, but has anyone taken a fish tank to Australia with them? did it survive? I have a custom built tank which would cost a fortune to be rebuilt, I want to take it, anyone out there think I am nuts? Depends how keen you are mate and where you are going. The biggest problem here is high temps, not low as in the UK. You would need a refrigeration unit and so It depends on whether your plumbing could be adapted to one. I have a 4x2x2 and a 6x2x28" but after losing the lot in a heat wave, I now only keep S American cichlids and clown loach 'cause they can stand the high temps. That said, there are some excellent tank bred malawis and tanganyikans out here now, that are in the main, used to high temps, unlike in the wild. Our leccy went off overnight for 18 hours (Wet season) and we lost none as the temps were not excessive (32 C). Council has fast tracked a new substation because of the number of complaints due to the loss of food in the deep freezers. Odd thing where I live; all the fish need to be tropicals. We don't need heaters, though I do have one, it came with the tank. Cheers, Bobj.
spottydog
Just to elaborate a little, the tank is 6' x 2' x 2' 10mm glass, and has been built to be fully plumbed for a marine reef set up, it weighs 132kg glass only and was custom built to my spec we decided to sell ours before coming over. You can get boxes made up to transport them and most the time they will be OK but it is still glass. We brought all our marine kit except the tank with us though and are glad as it seems quite expensive here with a smaller range (the inhabitants seem cheaper though). When you arrive are you going straight into a house where you'll be staying for a long time? Otherwise you'll need to factor in the storage and regular movement of the tank until you settle. So far in 4 years here we haven't been in a position to set up a marine tank so just have a single goldfish.
cluster13
i've had to settle for selling mine Huge 6x3x2 marine reef aquarium complete fish tank on eBay (end time 30-Mar-10 22:02:46 BST) just seems like too much bother for the size / wieght of the tank and too dificult and expensive to ship the contents (and probably import rules). I'm planning to buy a mask and snorkel instead good luck with your plans. steve
