Australian banks

We opened an ANZ account from the UK & it was a quick & easy process - you just have to present yourself at an ANZ branch over here with enough forms of ID to identify you (100 points worth & they give you details of what can make that up) to unlock it once you arrive.

They're certainly one of the bigger banks & I have no complaints with the account or service over here ($5 a month for unlimited transactions) - but I think I may have chosen to go with Commonwealth as they seem to have more branches & the local branch is open on Saturday's. I mainly use ANZ via internet banking but they have plenty of cashpoints (ATMs) everywhere so either are good.

ANZ, like others have said are one of the major banks in Australia, so your money should be safe with them. We did have an account with ANZ but changed to Bendigo.

hi

We used ANZ dead easy and all going OK 5 weeks in. We use Halo financial for foreign transfers which was also made very easy. There should be a link to follow on the ANZ site if not just type in Halo financial in your seach.

On arrival in Oz we had to go into ANZ branch and complete 100 point check to verify account, pretty basic really and they are really friendly and helpful.

if you need any further info, let me know

Good luck

Hi

i used ANZ and found them very helpful and quick They also put me onto a specialist firm to transfer money to Oz which was pretty cheap. I was very impressed with them...until i finally arrived in OZ. I thought HSBC in the UK was crap but ANZ is worse. Apart from having monthly fees which is another matter I had to change bank accounts to get an EFTPOS/Visa debit card that i can use on the internet which costs more $6 a month and not the usual debit card for $5. Another gripe with this card is that although it says visa debit on it Woolworths and Coles supermarkets wont give cash back as they say it is a credit card which it clearly is not.

There are banks that charge no fees if you pay in $2000 a month - ie, your wages- and I am considering moving my account so it might be a good idea to open with ANZ and when you get a job switch to another bank. Bankwest charge no fees and say you can use any cash machine. If the other bank charges you for using their cash machine Bankwest will refund the charge.

Keep your UK credit card as I am having trouble getting an Aussie one just in case you need it= especially to hire a car.

We use Commonwealth as well. We like them. No Dramas = No worries. We opened an account here. Took a blind of an eye and it was done.

Also, get at many credit cards as you can before coming out. We did. Never use 'em but then at least you have a stash should you need it unexpectedly.
