Here in WA (don't know about the rest of Aus), they do comprehensive training - which means they get about 3 weeks MH and can then do post grad in MH as a registered nurse. For those coming over, you'll find that you have far more knowledge and experience than some of your colleagues due to the specialist nature of your training.

Oh right, I was really worried that I wouldn't have as much knowledge, I don;t know why, but I had heard that the MHnursing has a lo of general nursing involved-which I hate!?

I just put my hand up and say I'm a speciality trained nurse, I have very little 'general' experience other than 10 weeks required by my course. I'm not duel registered. It is a little medical orientated, the ward I worked on did everyones BP TPR every morning, not just if they were titrating meds, or on Clozapine or experiencing some side effects, but everyone at least once a day.

Hi guys, just thought i'd drop in, usually its the oh that leaves messages. I'm a RMN-11yrs in addiction treatment, 3yrs in crisis work plus some ward experience. Currently waiting for NBV registration to come through, pr175 applied for in Nov 08 and house on market but little interest!!

We're aiming to land in Victoria, the sooner the better. Does anyone know what the job market is like in and around Melbourne for RMN's. Here in uk i'm on top band 6 pay and am hoping for similar in oz. I keep an eye on the jobs through seek.com and a couple of other websites

Don't know about jobs in Vic, it's a bit hit and miss grade wise, some hospitals won't offer promotional posts right off. I was a band 7 in UK and took a job offer of level 1.9 her in WA. Got CN post after a few months. Sometimes, it's just about getting a foot in the door.

I don't have much knowledge about this, but from what different agencies have told me, the pay scale goes on how many years experience you have. I recieved an email from clinicalone and it has a breakdown, rough guide to the different states pay scales. I've written Victoria for you and it's in aus dollar and it's wage per week;

VICTORIA:

Grade 1: Private- $699.90 Public- $675.50

Grade 2 Year 1: Private- $720.90 Public- $696.00

Grade 2 Year 2: Private- $759.10 Public- $732.60

Grade 2 Year 3: Private- $797.30 Public- $769.60

Grade 2 Year 4: Private- $837.50 Public- $808.40

Grade 2 Year 5: Private- $878.00 Public- $847.60

Grade 2 Year 6: Private- $918.20 Public- $886.40

Grade 2 Year 7: Private- $940.10 Public- $908.30

Grade 2 Year 8: Private- $961.90 Public- $930.10

Hope this helps!

Ive been successful at getting a Drug&Alcohol job with Healthscope, starting in oct. Im band 7 here and have been offered slightly more money due to 10yrs post qual. You need to look for Grade 2 jobs.

It might not be everyones choice but ive gone through an agency who set me up with a job interveiw. (Geneva health) I was very specific about what i wanted, so expected it to be difficult, but its turned out ok

Healthscope is taking on bit they dont always advertise. You can always submit your CV however, St john of god isnt taking on in VIC (although their SM units look good) at the moment so i hear, as they have a big drive for WA. there is another hosp, but i cant remember the name. Its in Fitzroy (anyone?)

If your going PR then you should find a job no problem. Be prepared to go back to the ward and be a staff nurse for a while, just to get your foot in the door.

If you wanted to speed things up you will get 457 without issues.

I began the process properly in Dec 08 and signed my contract with start date for new job, on monday this week.

Good luck

Well done with the job, are your employers in oz ok about holding the job till oct?

We're really wanting to be out in oz by end of the yr at very latest but i think selling the house here in uk will be the sticking point. If we do manage to sell up before the pr175 comes thro then i think we will change visa application to a state sponsor, fingers crossed.

Thanks, Ive been really lucky TBH they have been really understanding about our realistic timescales and have said as long as i start first week of october, they are happy.

We're in the same boat with the house. Our has only just gone on the market:eek: God knows what going to happen! LOL.

Have you chased up NBV? I would have thought reg would be back by now. As you can see on my sig, mine was done really quickly. i hear they will not let you know if anything is wrong, so its always worth checking with them. I know it may a 10pm call but always worth checking.

I didnt want to put all our eggs in one basket, so to say, hence the 457 not PR. and of course its cheaper!! will sort pr when we are there.

Keep in touch with how your getting on

Hey guys,

I am a mental health nurse in Scotland, looking to emigrate to Brisbane or maybe Adelaide. Are there a lot of jobs in mental health as in hospital based? I work in a low secure ward so I'm looking to have similar job in Oz. Do you still have mental health hospitals, or are they wards integrated into general hospitals?

Any help would be so much appreciated

Hi, just looked on NBV website today to find my name there, saying i am now registered as a nurse in victoria!

During the day i recieved a phone call from oz via the skills matching database. The guy was saying there's some employers who are interested in taking a closer look at my CV, so i'm expecting a further email tomorrow about it, I'll will keep you up to speed with any developments. He was talking about arranging a employer sponsored visa and asking how soon we wanted to be out in oz.

We just need to sell the house!!!!

As a RMN of 15yrs experience here in uk am i right to think that when registering with NBV i'd come under Div1, general??

For some horrible reason i keep thinking that i've misunderstood the forms and am now registered in the wrong category, so keep stressing about it.

I'd be really grateful if some could clear this up and help settle my mind

Hi joan01!

am new to this and haven't posted before so please forgive mistakes! was browsing with another query but came across your question. i was a 'G' grade nurse in the uk, and have now been here in sydney for 3 years, working as a mental health nurse within an emergency dept, in what is called a PECC (psych emergency care centre) so basically we assess and treat anyone with mental health issues that presents to the ed. i've only worked in this one hospital but from what i can see it's pretty similar to the uk, with a mental health unit attached to the 'main' general hospital. nurses here (i think in all states inc. nz) do a 'comprehensive' training so basically they are general nurses who can then choose to specialise via masters degree at the end of their training if they want. all nurses start as an RN and go up a level to RN year 8, after which they just get the usual pay increase. however, due to being an actual mental health nurse i applied for and was pretty quickly promoted to a CNS position (Clinical Nurse Specialist) which basically means that you're a specialist in the area you work in, and there is an expection that you will be a lead nurse including an element of teaching, although they do have designated CNE's (Clinical Nurse Educators) here too. CNS positions are like a regrading, in that there doesn't have to be a vacant position to apply for, so make sure once you settle in you look at this possibility as it's highly likely you will be more highly experienced and skilled than other RNs you're working with. With regard to your specific question (so sorry for the rambling!), i've been looking to move to brisbane area myself and have noticed advertisements several times for forensic mental health nurses. i believe there is a forensic service (how many units, medium/low security etc i don't know) in south west of brisbane, check out the qld health service website and just follow the links to jobs.

best of luck and hope you find what you're looking for! xxx

Hi Lenina,

Thankyou for the useful information you have given me. Your job sounds very interesting, and you must see different things on a daily basis. I'm looking for a ob with challenges, as I really don't like long stay or rehab much. I will certainly check out the QLD health service website, as I received an email the other day saying there were no MH jobs in QLD. So I did worry a bit there!!! What makes you want to move to Brisbane?

Hi I will qualify as a mental health nurse in august (fingers crossed) am appling for new grad programms as I type. Will I have more knowledge still from this or will the hospital expect me to know more than the other new grads? I am 37 so am not a youngster but am concerned that I will be in a sink or swim situation which is not really safe for the patients (or me come to that) any advice will be appreciated.

Due the specialised training the UK offers then I certainly think that you'll have more knowledge on mental health than the other grads ... i don't think there will be an expectation on you to do anything different than your colleagues at the same level .... you can just be quietly confident.

Hi

Glad to hear you are all set to go!

I am a community mental health nurse and am in the process of applying for jobs through an agency. A hospital is interested in interviewing me for a community mental health position. Can you give me any advice about what to expect from a telephone interview?

Any advice would be really useful.

I have my registration in place and am hoping to get a sponsor visa.

Thanks
