Keeping it local!

Why is it that many people seem to ask for meet ups with fellow brits from their home towns, when they come to oz? Surely coming to a new country is a new adventure and you'd want to embrace some different cultures and meet new types of people?....just a thought!

Meeting only with brits seems (in my experience) to involve discussing the great things about oz and the crap things about the UK!! (or the other way around depending on your experience!)

Here here!!!! I have come to Oz to intergrate into the Australian lifestyle, to meet the people and expand my horizons. I can however see why peolple want to meet up as it is like a security blanket; something or one who is from a familiar place, I also feel that just because you come from the same country doesn't instantly mean you will hit it off and I would much rather make friends be they Scottish, English, Irish, Australian, Chinese in fact anyone, as long as I click with them and they are on my wavelength. Lets face it you can never have too many friends!

Good posts, as you say it is a kind of security blanket, I know I was keen to meet other people from the UK when we arrived. Sadly the ones we befriended turned out to be very strange and I doubt if I would have been friendly with them while living in the UK to be honest with you.

You are right, it's good to make new friends from whichever country they come from, sometimes though when you first come over it's always nice to share experiences with fellow Brits and they can be very helpful as they have been through it all and can point you in the right direction too. So there are advantages too.

Good luck in your new lives in OZ.:wubclub:

I think its natural isnt it? Like Jayne says its a bit of a security blanket and you are all going through the same experiences together. I don't rabbit on to people that have never had children about childbirth etc. and naturally Aussies who have always lived there are not going to understand what its like to leave friends and family behind on the otherside of the world.

at the moment for us, its about people being in the same position as us......swapping info on visa applications etc. im sure the people we meet will be great....however with australia being such a huge country i know we prob won t see eachother over there. i want to have the adventure and meet people from all different culture s when we move.....however some friendly faces along the way have got to be a bonus?

Having lived in London for the last 20 years and seen the changes over here I am looking forward to meeting people for all over the world when we move over to OZ. Its the personality that counts Having spent my younger days moving around in the army never staying in one place for more than three years I understand what it is like to move away from friends But this is one move I am looking forward to

Hi, I would hope to still meet up with other british peeps when i get to Oz, purely for the reason that im not leaving because i hate british people, i would like to be friends with all sorts, just because i want to leave the uk doesnt mean that i never ever want to hear or talk about it again.

Thanks for all your replies to my thread! - it's interesting reading all the varied responses!!

I agree that familiartiy is good and it would have been a lot harder for us if we had not met some Brits through these sites. Plus I love meeting up with Brits out here and probably won't stop doing so - i always try and come to brit meets etc!

I've also wondered this myself, but I suppose people like to have things in common and it's a good way to meet people. The only danger is if you become a closed shop about it - some people are intolerant of other nationalities who immigrate to the UK and congregate in their own ethnic groups, speaking their mother tongue to each other in public - I know it's the same lingo in Oz and UK, but just be careful not to descend into a situation that you might have otherwise criticised in your home country.
