Adhd and medical

Hi there

I have just received a job offer with sponsorship etc. My son has a diagnosis of adhd , he is in secondary school, main stream school, is on 1 tablet a day for medication and had psychology for a couple of months recently.

Does anyone know if he is likely to pass/fail the medical? He is otherwise in good health and no other diagnosis apart from the adhd. 

I'm keeping my fingers crossed it wont be an issue but interested to hear others experiences.

When dealing with possible medical issues it’s always wise to talk to one of the agents who specialises in medical conditions - George Lombard is usually recommended but I think a few other agents now also cooperate with medical specialists for advice -  but ADHD doesn’t attract any disability funding (so no extra help in school beyond what the school can provide) and the medication is unlikely to push his costs over the threshold so you’ll probably be ok  but be prepared with current assessments of cognitive function, adaptive behaviour, skill profile etc just in case

For anyone who finds this post in the future and is in a similar situation- just to update my sons medical went through with no issues. It was referred to bupa visa services for 1 day and they passed it with no questions asked.

That is good. Just a note though that the criteria for temporary visas is lower than for PR.  I hope your visa is a PR visa.

We have had posters in the past who had children who passed the medical for a temp visa then years later failed the medical for PR and they had to go home.

Very good point. 

To the OP,  just be aware that you are unlikely to get any additional support in schools for ADHD beyond a suggestion he take Ritalin or something else.

Hi, that is a good point...but luckily it is for a 190 PR visa so all fine on that note but worth pointing out for others reading the post in similar situation. 

He doesn't pull in any extra funding at all in school and has always been in mainstream (he has 3 years left in secondary school now). 

He is prescribed medication but that is all.

While there might not be support funding, he may well find superior psychiatric care in Australia in the future should any review in diagnosis or medication be needed.

I am planning to move to Australia but my son has been diagnosed with ADHD And has got an EHCP plan in his school at the moment. Will this he an issue in applying for his visa? Hoping for your response. Did your child had EHCP at school when you applied your visa? What were the things asked when you applied about your child's medical

@heleni I think your question is answered by Quoll's response to the OPs question, which I've reposted above. It gets asked quite a lot actually, and in most cases ADHD doesn't seem to be an issue when it comes to the medical, but as advised you'd be wise to consult a registered migration agent with specialist knowledge of medical conditions.
