Temp visa due to UK job relocation to australia

Does anyone work for any UK companies that have offered you or you've applied to work in their Australian offices etc. This would be my ideal plan but I'm sure it doesn't happen regularly! 

It just feels like it would be the perfect opportunity to trial it out with knowing in the back of your head you will be returning, or not if you apply for other visa if you love it there!

I know will some will say nothing in permanent and can always return to England but just thought id ask incase anyone had done this! Thank you!!

I've definitely seen posts from people who've done it in the past.  However, they are usually people who have worked for that company for some time, in senior positions.  It's much cheaper to recruit locally than to pay visa fees and relocation costs for a UK employee (not to mention it takes a lot longer due to visa processing), so most companies won't do it unless there's a particular need. 

How old are you and what skills do you have?

I was lucky to be sponsored to relocate but it was over 10 years ago. I was working for a European bank that wanted to centralise some global services and Sydney was the location.

The options were take redundancy or apply to move. Visa, flights, removal costs and the first few months accommodation were covered - I initially treated it as a working holiday with the intention of moving back after a couple of years, but I ended up staying. I think I was expected to return some of the relocation expenses if I returned within the first two years.

It would be much harder for me to do it today as a lot of banks have rationalised their operations and moved back office and IT roles to low-cost labour locations, so the pool of potential jobs is much smaller.

Having said that I know someone working for an Australian bank in London who had arranged a transfer to Aus, but covid has put those plans on hold for now.

Global businesses move people all the time (barring during a pandemic) ... if your company wants to move you because you have specific skills that they can’t hire for in Australia, then that is often doable.

As others have said, it’s entirely viable but because if the expense involved, global employers tend to do this when they require a role in Australia that they cannot hire there, or (less frequently) when it’s an employee they really, really don’t want to leave the business.    

I’ve experienced both.  One as employee and one as employer.   In both cases it’s because a job needs doing that required experience and knowledge you can’t hire off the streets. 
 

If you can organise this with your employer, it’s by far the best way to do it.  Moving to Australia is expensive and having a company foot the bill AND do all of the organising is fantastic. 

My word of caution for anyone doing this is to make sure they relocation contract they give you is ironclad on repatriation costs.   Business strategy can change unexpectedly. Business circumstances can change unexpectedly.  It’s not unheard of for an employee to find themselves on the other side of the world and made redundant because of an unexpected downturn in business.  Make damn sure your contract covers the costs of repatriation and pay for a lawyer to check it over too  

It happened to me when the company I worked for was acquired.  The attitude and generosity when an employer wants you to move to advance their strategy is markedly different to when you are surplus to requirement and an unwanted cost burden.

Hi, not UK but from France. A French (but worldwide) company hired me in France almost 2 years ago with all interviews done in Paris. I worked 2 months over there as a 'trial' then I came over here (in Sydney) within the local office.

It's a local contract, local visa (482) and they covered the flight tickets (both me and my partner).

I never applied for anything, Ive set on Linkedin that I was keen for an opportunity in Australia and they contacted me since they couldn't source my skill locally (database engineering)

Thanks everyone for your comments, I'm a customer service manager and my partner is a plumber so nothing particularly 'specialised' that they couldn't find in Australia themselves. interesting though that banking seems to a sector that 'moves around alot'

I have previously been in Australia for two years on a working holiday via 7 years ago and would love to go back but ideally just for a couple of years as i dont think i could deal with the permanent move .. looks like a skilled visa is the most likely way... I was just being hopeful that moving via work was a common thing!!

It was fairly common for in demand skills at one time but not so much these days.

Actually, trades are more in demand so your partner might stand a chance of a permanent visa, but it sounds as though that's not what you are looking for.
