How long to get a place of our own (rent)

Hello

We are flying into Melb 5th Jan.

We will have been in TAS with family previously.

We are thinking airbnb for while we look for a place, but are not sure how long to book.

Given that we probably won't have jobs by then, how long does it take to find a place and move in?  We will have money so that we can pay bigger deposits or months worth of rent in advance in lieu of jobs.  Or does it not work like that?

Cheers!

factor in a couple of weeks generally

We arrived 27th August. Viewed and applied on 29th August, approved on 31st August, paid deposit 03 Sept, picked up the keys on the 5th Sept. The previous tenant had already moved out so that was in our favour.

2-3 weeks should be more than sufficient.

Depends on how fussy you are and what the local market is like.  Are there lots to look at at the moment?

When we arrived in SA it was a quiet time and it took so 5 weeks to find somewhere we liked, then the owners were away and it took a further three weeks to get the keys!

Most people get fixed up in 2 or three weeks it would seem.

Hi Unzippy, most people who stay in our furnished apartment stay for 4 weeks, and pretty much always find a rental within this time.  We have had people who have booked for 2 weeks and then been forced to take a long-term rental that wasn't ideal as it was the only one available at short notice.

Good luck and feel free to ping me if you need somewhere to stay.

Update.

In:D

Used the domain and realestate apps.  Landed in Melb on Friday 5th Jan, went visiting on Sat (42deg heat:rolleyes:), Mon and Tues.  It was like feeding time at the zoo, queueing to get in to look round sh!tty little shoeboxes - pretty depressing to be honest.

Found one on Tues eve that we thought was worth filling the paperwork for, did it there and then sitting outside the property.

Due to no jobs we offered 3 months rent up front, as well as the bond.  Submitted scans of our medicare cards and passports (one UK and one Aus), UK driving licences and ref from last landlord.

Got accepted the following eve, collected keys Monday 15th, our shipped stuff got delivered Sat 20th, internet installed 25th and got rid of our last cardboard box yesterday.

Time to get job hunting;)
