Have enjoyed reading everyone's experiences and have drawn a lot of advice mutual feelings from here. Just thought I'd share our story. Moved to oz 10 years ago met my English wife out here in outback NSW married in England in 2013 had 20 Aussies come over for our wedding which was great. We've both made some fantastic lifelong friends here even more so than we had back in the uk. I'm from Pembrokeshire South Wales and my wife from Oxfordshire. I've managed some large broad acre farms here mainly cereals, summer corn and cotton. Have loved it, have a great social life playing rugby and the club is very family orientated. We have 2 children born in the last 3 years. We love the country life and became citizens around 18 months ago. I guess you can feel a BUT coming along lol .... Both my wife and I feel, like so many stories we've read here, that somethings missing for us, and that something is family. I'm very close to my mum and sister and now we have children we find it very hard without the family support network. We also too sometimes find we don't really fit in here. We didn't grow up here. On public holidays like Easter/Christmas for example Aussies generally spend time with families and my wife and I feel a bit down sometimes that we have no family to be with at that time. And we long to be home with our own families. Of course there are pros and cons about living here and in the UK. People on this forum list them to no end, too hot, flies, terrible radio and tv, little history and "Footy" rammed down your throat constantly. But there are things about Australia I love, the wide open spaces, the large efficient productive farming sector which is a life more than a job. Beautiful beaches, Melbournes culture, cheap fuel for big V8s. (I'm a petrol head also) camping, fishing, catching Yabbies in the dam, and the very laid back but salt of the earth people in rural Australia. So this year, hopefully in the next few months we are moving back to Wales to take over my family's farm there, which I know the rain will take some getting used to! But having Europe on the door step, which we were reminded of last year on a trip home and to the south of France and Normandy. Loved the 1hr flight from Bristol to bordeaux! Although we will definitely be keeping our Australian passports with Brexit around the corner, if the daily mail scaremongering about UK passport queues at Euro airports are anything to go by lol! So just the end of this chapter of our lives for now and who knows one day we may be back, but for now onto our next adventure with much needed family support and fond memories of this beautiful lucky country. After comparing quotes and weighing up situations and scenarios, we have sent our household belongings with allied pickfords in a shared container for about $5000, chess were so far off the mark they quoted $16000 for a 40ft container and we would have to deliver our belongings ourself from Wagga Wagga to Sydney! Crazy! Wridgways were quite competitive but was not impressed with the communication and service, the local franchisee was retiring so couldn't be bothered with our move. I have two antique ww2 army willys jeeps which are going in a 40ft container from melbourne with one other persons small car with Kingstown shipping for $1800 per jeep delivered to Southampton which I thought is very fair price. Just awaiting kids uk passports which was a fair few hoops to jump through but really just going through the motions. Really looking forward to getting home and the family suppprt with the kids. We have a big leaving do planned with 180 people coming which will be great. After playing rugby here for 10 years I think I've played 3 games in the rain, not sure South Wales will be the same lol! Collie Posted July 30, 2017 Share Posted July 30, 2017 Good luck. If possible, it may be worth leaving some assets here in AUD to hedge your bets on Brexit. Last thing you want to do is transfer all your $ to GBP, Brexit crash happens and the GBP loses value and then if you decide that you want to come back (as it sounds like you really enjoyed Australia), find that you can't afford it.
