457 Visa Help

Hi all,

 

Are there any companies that specialise in this sort of recruitment? I'm looking to work with a recruiter that will hopefully bear me in mind should anything suitable come up that has 457 sponsorship attached in my field of IT.

 

I'm coming in on a tourist visa initially, I know looking for and applying for jobs isn't allowed on this premise, so would be really useful to start speaking to someone before I actually enter the country.

Looks to me like my main issue is finding an employer, but not impossible. What are the issues you're seeing with regards to immigration awarding me a 457?

Well finding an employer sponsor is not just a "main issue". It is a complete show stopper for the vast majority of people. Also you have said elsewhere that your occupation is not on the skills lists, so that might be the show stopper VS refers to.

Thanks. I've since established that the list of occupations you can apply for are not state based (it is a federal government list), so the list of applicable roles applies to all of Australia, which puts me in a healthier position. Obviously there is greater need in some states for certain skills, but this means I'm not necessarily limited to the East coast, although thats undoubtedly where the opportunity mainly is, and at least on the surface of it, looks an easier route in.

 

IF (I know its a big if), I can negotiate this obstacle, my understanding was although it obviously won't be straight forward and there will be undoubtedly be further complications, even if I have a job offer with 457 attached to it, that that is the main hurdle to clear.

Since you have not mentioned what field of IT you are specialised in, finding an employer to fork out thousands in an already swamped market could be a major hurdle you face. Unless you have some very indemand skill set that is hard to find someone locally.

 

From my understanding you cannot work until the visa has been processed and granted, how long do you expect the employer to wait!

There are certain agreements in place with some of the niche IT recruiters who fund the visa and do all the processing for you on your behalf, which looks like it would be the way to go.

 

Regards to how long an employer will wait, its a great, unknowable question. I've had a company here in the UK wait for me for six months. Equally, elsewhere, I've also been told if I can't join within a month, then to forget it. Each position will be on a case by case basis, dictated by how great their need is, I imagine.

One thing to watch out for is agencies that offer to sponsor you directly - you are then paid by them, they take a massive cut of the rate the client pays & whilst the risk of been given 60 days to return home is slightly less, the 'agency' which is effectively your employer can expect you to go wherever they can find you work & if you don't take it then...60 days to return home.

 

It is probably still possible to get sponsorship for certain IT roles where either the skills are very niche or there is something unappealing about the role - location or more likely salary. I took a sponsored role in 2008 and it had been vacant for 5 years (height of the boom) - hardly surprising since the salary was under $80k and the going rate for the role was nearer $120k - funnily enough as soon as I got PR independently I got a huge pay rise!

You do realise that with a 457, any prospective employer must ensure that there is no suitably qualified and experienced Australian citizen or permanent resident or ‘eligible temporary visa holder’ readily available to fill that position? ​​​​​
A lot of occupations are exempt from the labour market testing requirement including many if not all IT-related occupations.
