Advice on short term rental location - going slowly crazy looking!

Hi,

We are after a bit of advise on where to do a short term rental from landing until we either buy or do a long term rental.

We are flying into Melbourne on Oct 1st and planning on living there.

We are after a 1 month rented place (current plan) to get us in and settled and to allow us to start sorting our lives out.

We have seen very expensive places in the centre of Melbourne (about $10,000 for the month!), some more reasonable prices and looking further out the price drops even more.

We have seen a place on AirBnB in Coburg that meets our needs (and will not break the bank).

So the questions...

What is Coburg like - is it simple to get into the city and is it suitable for family living (2 adults and a 10 year old)?

Can you recommend other areas in and around Melbourne that are family friendly but allow access to the centre?

Also - has anyone used AirBnB and had either good or bad experiences with them?

Thanks

Jon

Coburg has easy access to the city, trams run down Sydney rd, AirBnB is pot luck, some places are great and some not so good, best of luck with the move.

Oh and Coburg is OK, very multicultural, take the usual precautions and you should be fine there.

Hi, congrats on the impending move. We stayed in St Kilda and Port Melbourne - both for a month each while we Waited for our things to arrive. Both have good transport links to the city (light rail tram) and both by the bay. I really liked Port Melbourne - good selection of local shops on Bay Street, easy city access, some nice playgrounds and close to the beach. It felt safer than St Kilda to me. We used AirBnB for both stays, both were great and a lot less than $10,000 per month!

We went out to Melbourne last year to reccy and we stayed in a house in Richmond via Air bnb. It was fantastic much better than hotels or a like. And so easy !!

We emigrate may 31st and we have booked a nice

Place in Richmond for a month, basically because we already know our way round Richmond so that helps settle things down a bit, plus getting Into the city and pretty much anywhere was sooooo easy! So we don't have to rush into buying a car.

Most inner city suburbs have brilliant public transport links, nothing like we have in the UK (North)

Hi we stayed in the Gold Coast with Airbnb earlier this year.

We paid £1200 for 10 nights, for a massive water side home which was amazing. I think because you're staying in someone's home, each place is going to be completely different, depending on how good the owners are. Our rental was very homely as it was the owners home and we had a great time.

We are looking for rentals again for when we emigrate. Airbnb for about a month has come out much more expensive than anything else though!

I love Port Melbourne - v well placed. Always found Quality of airb&b high - but pot luck as people say - just pick somewhere with good reviews. Start looking for rentals as soon as you get here though - Gets much much busier and challenging approaching Xmas and in New Year

We used AirBnB to book a large, 3 bedroom apartment just outside Melbourne CBD, near the MCG, for three nights. Cost us $200 a night plus cleaning fees if I remember right. When ever you book any of this type accommodation you take a chance but the reviews on the site help. You could also look at Stayz.com.au for holiday lets. We have used Stayz to find places to stay for holidays quite a bit.

Hi JohnSmile

We got short term (3 months actually) furnished rental in Kew which meant we still had access to trams into the city but weren't right in the CBD. It was still expensive and the rental company had other furnished rentals further out but you would maybe need a car if you were further out (Glen Waverley/Mount Waverley). They seem to get good and bad reviews of Tripadvisor but our experience was fine. You can always check the tripadvisor reviews for the specific apartments or houses you have your eye on.

We tried to get a rental through airbnb and stayz.com.au but the problem we had was that you would request the dates you wanted the rental, waited for them to contact the owner and then they would let us know it was already booked. Since we were in the UK and the owners are in Oz, it would take days or sometimes longer for them to get back to us and in the meantime we would just be hanging on waiting as you have to give your credit card details to book in advance if the owner says "OK!". That is why we ended up just booking the apartment in Kew as it meant it was done and we got confirmation. Peace of mind. We didn't have much time between unexpectedly selling our house after nothing selling in our area for past couple of years and our visas expiring though, so we only had about 1 month to organise getting a rental in Australia.

Good luck with it all - you'll get good advice on here.
